13 Southern Utah Adventure Gear List

Gear selection is one of the most important steps when preparing for any adventure. The right gear is pivotal in your trekking experience. The following is a gear list to help you prepare for your Southern Utah National Park Adventure.

There are many brands and types of clothing and gear. Usually higher quality leads to longer life of the item. Take note of items you will use again after this trip when buying new items. Gear you will only use once may be of lower quality. Please make sure your gear is comfortable and fits well.

If your trip will take place between October and April, you will need additional gear. You will find the additional recommended items at the end of this gear list.

Laundry services are available on nights spent in Moab, Utah at the Red Cliffs Lodge.

All “red bold text” indicates an interactive click-able hyperlink. We have also included separate links to women’s gear for each item that has a women’s specific design and/or fit.

*Please make sure to pick your specific size. There are choices for many of these items.*

Packs and Bags

Large Rolling Suitcase

We will have room for one large suitcase or duffel, which should be able to fit all of your gear. We recommend a model with wheels for easier transport. Example: Ripstop Rolling Duffel, by AmazonBasics Pro tip: If you use small bags to separate your clothing and other items, you will have a much easier time finding everything in your large suitcase! Ex: Organizer Drawstring Bags, by Safebet

Small Day Pack

Bring one 8-15 liter backpack or a hydration pack fit with a water bladder. It must be able to hold enough fluids (2 liters) for the desert environment. It will also store day use items such as a lunch, camera and trekking poles. Ex: Talon 11 Hiking Backpack, by Osprey >Female Version< Ex: 2 Liter Hydraulics Reservoir, by Osprey

14 Travel Locks

Used for securing luggage in transit. Make sure that you buy TSA approved locks. Please store a spare key in a separate bag or pack. Ex: 4689T Keyed Luggage Lock, by Master Lock

Clothing and Layering

Clothing impacts not only your comfort, but also your safety. Always be critical of the quality and the fit of your clothing. Cotton clothing must be avoided as it dries very slowly and is a poor insulator when wet. Instead, choose wool or synthetic fabrics that wick the sweat away from your skin. If you pick layers that build on each other, you will be able to add or remove layers to match the weather and stay warm and dry.

Four-Layer System

Base Layer: Manages moisture and wicks perspiration away from your skin (Polypro, capilene, dri-clime) Insulating Layer: Should be down-fill or synthetic-fill (e.g. down, primaloft, or polarguard) Soft shell: Should be a durable, comfortable, insulating and wind/water resistant layer that breathes well. The main softshell fabrics are Polartec Wind Pro, Gore Windstopper N25, Schoeller, and each clothing manufacturer’s own fabrics. Hard shell: Windproof, waterproof, and breathable (e.g. Gore-Tex or similar)

Upper Body

Base Layer T-Shirt

Two short-sleeved tech shirts that are good at wicking moisture. Ex: Hyperlayer Short Sleeve, by The North Face >Female Version<

Long-sleeved Shirt

At least two long-sleeved tech shirts made of synthetic or wool material. A sun shirt works well, and a light color works even better. Ex: Hyperlayer Long Sleeve, by The North Face >Female Version<

Mid-layer Top

A lightweight long-sleeved mid-layer fleece for cold mornings. A hybrid fleece works well because of its light weight, breathability and flexibility. Ex: Ventrix Fleece Hybrid, by The North Face >Female Version<

15 Hard Shell Jacket

A waterproof jacket in case the weather turns wet and for Cataract Canyon. Ensure your jacket has underarm zippers and no insulation. Ex: Venture 2 Jacket, by The North Face >Female Version<

Lower Body

Lightweight Trekking Pants

Two pairs of lightweight, light-colored and full-length trekking pants. Zip- off pants are nice. Ex: Paramount Active Pants, by The North Face >Female Version<

Trekking Shorts

Something to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face. Your favor- ite personal hat is a great choice. Ex: Horizon Breeze Brimmer, by The North Face >Female Version<

Buff/Neck Gaiter

Sunglasses

We prefer polarized sunglasses with UV protection. Sunglasses should be dark and protect your eyes well from the sun. Ex: Optic Piper, by Spy Optics

Personal Equipment

Adjustable Trekking Poles

3-section adjustable trekking poles. Ex: Expedition 3 Poles, by Black Diamond

17 †† Water Bottles: Two wide-mouth Nalgene water bottles with minimum 1L capaci- ty. If you are planning on using a water bladder, it is still wise to bring a spare bottle.

†† Travel/Casual Clothes: We recommend bringing a few pair of casual and comfortable out- fits for traveling and dinners out.

†† Swimsuit: One you already own will be great.

†† Camera: Please make sure to bring your SD card, cords and accessories.

†† Electrolytes: Hydrating in a desert environment can be difficult. Electrolytes help your body retain more water, avoid cramps and regulate your body temperature.

Medicine

†† Lip-screen: Two sticks of lip balm with an SPF rating of 20 or higher.

†† Sunscreen: Plenty of sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45. Pro Tip: It is convenient to bring a few smaller tubes, rather than one large tube, so that you can carry it with you and re-apply regularly.

†† Insect Repellent (optional): We recommend 100% deet repellent in a lotion form.

†† OTC Medicine: We recommend bringing medicine like pepto-bismol and imodium A-D.

†† Personal Medication: Please don’t forget to pack all of your personal medications!

†† If you are prone to “car sickness” it is always a good idea to bring motion sickness tablets for remote car drives.

18 Additional Gear: Trips October-April

The temperature tends to be 20-30 degrees cooler during the months of October through April. There is also a higher chance for precipitation. Please plan on bringing the following gear with you so that you can be ready for various weather and trail conditions.

Medium-sized Day Pack

We recommend a 20-25 liter pack instead of the smaller pack we recom- mend for the hotter months. You will carry day use items such as two water bottles, camera, snacks and extra clothing layers in this backpack. Ex: Speed 22, by Black Diamond

Day Pack Rain Cover (optional)

A rain cover should be fitted to the size of your day pack. This cover keeps your gear dry in the event of precipitation. Ex: Backpack Rain Cover - XS, by Mountainsmith

Base Layer Top

Two long-underwear style base layer tops. It is best if one is lightweight and one is medium-weight so you have options for various temperatures. Breathability is key, so no cotton. Ex: Light Long Sleeve, by The North Face >Female Version< Ex: Ultra-Warm Poly Crew, by The North Face >Female Version<

Insulated Puffy Jacket

A medium-weight insulated puffy jacket. Down fill or synthetic is okay. Ex: Thermoball Hoodie, by The North Face >Female Version<

Rain Poncho

A poncho provides a lot of rain protection in a lightweight package. Ex: Waterproof Hooded Poncho, by Foxelli

Rain Pants One pair of waterproof pants. Full-length side zippers are a nice upgrade. Don’t feel like you have to buy the best pant. Ex: PreCip Full Zip, by Marmot >Female Version<

19 Warm Skullcap

A beanie or ski hat to keep your head warm. Ex: Reversible Beanie, by The North Face

Medium-weight Gloves

A warmer soft shell glove for when lightweight gloves are not enough. Ex: Apex+ Etip Gloves, by The North Face >Female Version<

Hiking Boots

One pair of sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. A high top boot is preferable for this time of year. Bring these instead of the other boot we recommend- ed for hotter months. Ex: Quest 4D 3 GTX Boot, by Salomon >Female Version<

Heavy Wool Socks

One or two pairs of warm wool socks for hiking days that are colder. Ex: Outdoor Heavy Crew Sock, by Smartwool

Gaiters (optional)

One pair of waterproof gaiters. These keep your feet clean and dry in the event of dusty, muddy or wet conditions. Make sure to size them to your boot. Ex: Rocky Mountain Gaiter, by Outdoor Research >Female Version<
