School of Fine and Performing Arts Fashion Studies Department Digital Fashion Design

Fashion Studies at Columbia College Chicago is a dynamic urban program that recently underwent a complete curricular overhaul to create a twenty-first century course of study tailored to current and future industry contexts. We are committed to exploring the growing intersection of fashion with technology; fostering size-, age-, gender-, and culture-inclusive business and design practices; supporting environmentally and socially sustainable business and design models; stimulating political activism and justice in fashion spaces; and creating a fashion community in Chicago of likeminded academic and industry insiders. Our department is a Business of Fashion Notable School, and our students regularly win top prizes in local and national competitions. We host study-away programs in New York, , Bath, Berlin and Milan and run a Fashion Lab for industry-academic partnerships with major fashion brands.

To support our new programs, our department seeks a Practitioner in Residence in Digital Fashion Design with strong expertise in both digital and analog patternmaking and construction as well as other CAD software (Optitex and Adobe Illustrator) and who possesses the ability to move seamlessly and teach fluid movement between digital and analog spaces. The appointment will be for a single semester, January 1, 2020 through May 31, 2020. Successful applicants will have strong skills in digital and analog patternmaking and construction as well as a background in user-centric design thinking and a commitment to critical/creative problem solving through a design practice. The ideal candidate will possess specialization in fashion’s intersection with sustainability/environmental studies; we are also interested in individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: wearable technology/smart textiles, disability studies, biophilic design, gender nonconforming style, modesty wear, street wear/urban apparel, size inclusivity, age inclusivity, global fashion.

Duties & Responsibilities • Teach four courses in digital patternmaking and construction in Spring 2020 semester • Participate in new course design and implementation • Work with current faculty and students to promote understanding and buy-in of the give-and- take between digital and analog patternmaking and construction in applied industry contexts • Lead a sophisticated conversation in the classroom about the impact of digital tools on apparel and accessory construction and design • Explore job placement opportunities for digitally-savvy designers

Qualifications The successful candidate must possess the terminal degree in Fashion Design or a comparable field, and will be an Optitex and CAD super-user.

The ideal candidate will have college-level teaching experience, a well-developed pedagogy, and some industry experience.
