Valparaiso University Editorial Style Guide Compiled and edited by Integrated Marketing and Communications Updated July 2017 The following guidelines follow Associated Press and Chicago Manual of Style. This style should be used for all Valparaiso University marketing and communications, including but not limited to print materials (brochures, event programs, fact sheets, etc.); web copy (stories, releases, department pages, etc.); email; and social media. For style questions not referenced here, consult the Associated Press Stylebook. In general: • Always use Valparaiso University, Valpo, or the University when referring to Valparaiso University. Never use Valparaiso, VU, or Valpo University. • Never break the word Valparaiso, University, or Valpo. • Capitalize University as a standalone when referring to Valparaiso University. • Lowercase university when using as an adjective or Valparaiso University could not take its place in the sentence, i.e., when used generally or to refer to other universities. • Use one space between sentences and following colons or other punctuation. • Use serial commas in all marketing materials. Omit the serial comma only for materials sent to media outlets. Example: students, faculty, and staff • Use a space before and after em dash, en dash (with the exception of numerical ranges), or ellipses. • Review the document to ensure the type font is consistent for text, headers, and headlines. • It is recommended that font size be set at 10-point font or larger. 2 a, an — Use the article a before consonant sounds and an before vowel sounds. Example: a historic event an homage abbreviations and acronyms — Never use V.U. or VU as an acronym for Valparaiso University. -

Preamble: Core Goals for Undergraduate Education Graduates of Ball State University are individuals who realize their intellectual potential, who seek to add breadth and depth to their perspectives, and who maintain their physical well-being. Graduates of the university command extensive knowledge and a mature repertoire of cognitive, practical, and technological skills. They exhibit integrity and responsible action in their social, professional, and civic lives. They respect the histories, cultures, and needs of others. They inform their decisions through critical, creative, and scientific reasoning, and they discern the consequences of their decisions and actions at the local, national, and global levels. They acknowledge responsibility for environmental well- being and for the civic engagement that a diverse democracy requires. Employing scientific, critical, and creative thinking, Ball State graduates transform Experience into information (isolate discrete, recognizable and usable facts), Information into knowledge (analyze facts within an intellectual framework, discover meaning in experience), Knowledge into judgment (reflect on knowledge gained to make choices and direct what they think, say and do), Judgment into action (take individual responsibility and contribute to the well- being of their communities). B. Goals and Objectives To achieve this vision and accomplish these transformations, student learning experiences are guided by a recursive, intellectual development process inherent in the following goals: 1. Students with creative ability in these areas, as well as students who have a strong, yet undeveloped interest in these areas are invited to apply for admission. Admission to the College is dependent upon an assessment of the student's poten- tial to do college level work in a rigorous arts and communications curriculum. In some cases, a personal interview may be required.
