Care and Maintenance of the Euphonium and Piston-Valve Tuba You Will Need: 1) Soft cloth (cotton or flannel) 4) Valve brush 2) Flexible brush (also called a “snake”) 5) Tuning slide grease 3) Mouthpiece brush 6) Valve Oil Daily Care 1) Never leave your instrument unattended. It takes very little time for someone to take it. 2) The safest place for your instrument is in the case. Leave it there when you’re not playing. 3) Do not let other people use your instrument. They may not know how to hold and care for it. 4) Do not use your case as a chair, foot rest or step stool. It is not designed for that kind of weight. 5) Lay your case flat on the floor before opening it. Do not let it fall open. 6) Do not hit your mouthpiece, it can get stuck. 7) Do not lift your instrument by the valves. Use the bell and any large tubes on the outside edge. 8) No loose items in your case. Anything loose will damage your instrument or get stuck in it. 9) Do not put music in your case, unless space is provided for it. If you have to fold it or if it touches the instrument, it should NOT be there. 10) Avoid eating or drinking just before playing. If you do, rinse your mouth with water before playing. 11) You may not need to do it every day, but keep your valves running smooth with valve oil. Put the oil directly on the exposed valve, not in the holes on the bottom of the casings. -

Run lukewarm water through the bell section. Rinse and drain. Join the bell and slide sections together and secure them simply with resistance. The bell and slide sections should have a gap of between 5-7mm of black space between them. -

Hopkins JHS Symphonic Band 2014-2015: Course Outline Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble is the second course in the comprehensive band program at Hopkins JHS and Mission San Jose HS. It is an advanced level performing class. Students are expected to practice their instruments daily for at least 20-25 minutes. Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all band participants. Students in this class will continue their refinement of basic musical skills (tone production, music reading, and general musicality) through the performance of complex band music. The Hopkins bands are considered to be among the best in the Bay Area and in California! THE TRUMPET AS A VOICE OF AMERICANA IN THE AMERICANIST MUSIC OF GERSHWIN, COPLAND, AND BERNSTEIN DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Amanda Kriska Bekeny, M.M. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Timothy Leasure, Adviser Professor Charles Waddell _________________________ Dr. Margarita Ophee-Mazo Adviser School of Music ABSTRACT The turn of the century in American music was marked by a surge of composers writing music depicting an “American” character, via illustration of American scenes and reflections on Americans’ activities. In an effort to set American music apart from the mature and established European styles, American composers of the twentieth century wrote distinctive music reflecting the unique culture of their country. In particular, the trumpet is a prominent voice in this music. The purpose of this study is to identify the significance of the trumpet in the music of three renowned twentieth-century American composers. This document examines the “compositional” and “conceptual” Americanisms present in the music of George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein, focusing on the use of the trumpet as a voice depicting the compositional Americanisms of each composer. The versatility of its timbre allows the trumpet to stand out in a variety of contexts: it is heroic during lyrical, expressive passages; brilliant during festive, celebratory sections; and rhythmic during percussive statements. In addition, it is a lead jazz voice in much of this music. As a dominant voice in a variety of instances, the trumpet expresses the American character of each composer’s music. -

This year‘s edition of isa will not only look back to the events of 1814, 1914 and 1989, but also examine the changes we have been through since and in what way these changes have affected our lives – as a society and as a cultural community. As rector of one of the biggest cultural institutions in the world, I wish you much inspiration and personal development as you explore and visit the wide range of courses, concerts and workshops of isa14. But isaScience is also reaching out to a broader public interested in scholarly discourse on music-related matters that tie in to historical, sociological, pedagogical, acoustical and anthropological issues, and it takes place in an atmosphere characterised by relaxed encounters between participants and the staff, who come from a considerable number of different countries and research traditions. This year’s contributions not only cover a more complete range of academic fields, running from acoustics and music pedagogy to music history and ethnomusicology, but are also presented as part of a programme that encourages and facilitates inter- disciplinary communication and exchange in the form of several workshops that are closely related to isa’s master class programme.
