It does so through a case study of the introduction and diffusion into Britain of a brass musical instrument, the wide bore German horn, over a period of some 40 years in the middle of the twentieth century. -

In a memorial presented in 1835 to the Lords of the Admiralty, the author of the journals which form this volume details his various services. He joined the Navy in October, 1793, his first ship being H.M.S. Blonde. He was present at the siege of Martinique in 1794, and returned to England the same year in H.M.S. Hannibal with despatches and the colours of Martinique. For a few months the ship was attached to the Channel Fleet, and then suddenly, in 1795, was ordered to the West Indies again. Here he remained until 1802, during which period he was twice attacked by yellow fever. The author was engaged in upwards of eighteen boat actions, in one of which, at Tiberoon Bay, St. -
Composer Suggestions for the Euphonium
Euphonium: 3-Valve, 4-Valve, and 4-Valve Compensating Euphoniums: (The low range and intonation will differ depending on how many valves you have) *see attached chart Breath capacity Articulations: staccato, accents, slurred, legato tonguing, no marking Trills and Tremoli Double and Triple Tonguing Extended Techniques: Flutter Tonguing and Multi-phonics Mutes (You MUST allow time to put the mute in and adjust tuning slide) Composer Suggestions: “The euphonium is often called the “cello” of the band or the “shortstop” of a ball team.” Counter Melodies are great! It can be treated as an individual or be combined with the Clarinets, Horns, Saxes and other brasses. Earlier band literature treated it as an a “cello”, but more recent composers and arrangers are often treating it in a “new and lesser” role. They often give it the upper octave of the tuba part or treat it like a 3rd trombone. It has many more capabilities! The Euphoniums role changes depending on what group it is in. (Orchestras, Jazz Combos, Chamber Ensembles, and British Brass Bands) For example, in a British Brass Band it is treated in this way: The euphonium part is flexible and is often compared to that of the `cello in an orchestra. It is equally at home doubling the solo cornet line an octave down, as a melodic or counter-melodic lead, doubling the Bb bass an octave up or occasionally with the 1st trombone. The range of the part is large: most players will be comfortable over more than two octaves, from low G to top A, with the occasional higher note. -

Bard Graduate Center Research Guide: Ancient and Medieval China (to c. 1000 C.E.) This guide lists resources for researching the arts and material culture of ancient and medieval imperial China, to c. 1000 C.E. This time period begins with the neolithic and bronze ages (c. 4000 - 200 B.C.E.) and continues through the end of the Five Dynasties period (960 C.E.), including the Xia, Shang, Zhou, Han, and T'ang dynasties. Although art history and material archaeology resources are emphasized, research on this topic is very interdisciplinary, and some resources for history, philosophy, religion, and literature are also included in the guide. This guide was compiled by Karyn Hinkle at the Bard Graduate Center Library. Required Clothing List What to Bring on Course For the following courses: Alaska Alpine Backpacking Courses Packing for Wilderness Travel Wilderness travel means you can and, for your comfort, should carry a lot less than you do in the regular world; most experienced wilderness travelers will tell you that they bring about the same amount of gear on a three-day trip as they would on a three-week trip. Your COBS Packing List: • Colorado Outward Bound School provides other necessary equipment not on this list, including stoves, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, backpacks, cookware, sleeping tarps, ropes, dry bags, and lifejackets. • There are no additional fees for the use of our equipment, but if our equipment is lost or damaged beyond normal wear and tear, you will be charged for the replacement. • Pack your clothing and gear in a duffel bag or suitcase. You will keep personal items such as clean clothes (for your return trip home) and valuables (cell phones, electronic devices, and wallets) in your bag or suitcase while you are on course. These items are kept at our base camp facility in a locked storage area while you are on course. Please leave unnecessary items at home. • Once on the course, your instructors will help you select from your luggage the best combination of items for you. They will assess your personal gear, the group gear you will be required to carry, and then balance it against your pack weight, physical size, and temperature for the time of year. • Since this list must accommodate ALL the weather conditions you may encounter and consider the wide range of individual preferences and body temperatures of our students, it is very likely you will not use every single item on this list. -
