2017 PERENNIAL REPORT Rudbeckia are native to Indiana. At KIB we try to plant as many native species as we can to help our neighbors— pollinators! Hi Folks,

We are Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. Often, our work is about creating beautiful places: a park, a mural, an outdoor classroom, a tree-lined street. But the beauty we create needs to be kept. Keeping, or tending, is ingrained in who we are.

Our mission is both human and ecological. We tend to the natural world, neighborhood places, and, to the best of our ability, people. Our work creates value for birds, butterflies, bees, and our waterways… for the youth at their first jobs… the college students on paths to green professions… and for the thousands of volunteers who proudly clean, green, and beautify their corners of Marion County. As we care for the environment, we aim, intently, to improve the quality of the lives we touch.

In 2017, with your help, we’ve tended to KIB, too. We grew our staff to reach ambitious goals. A new strategic plan will help us measure our progress toward a better city. And new data infrastructure will help us tend to the invaluable relationships we enjoy with each of you.

Thank you for helping us keep Indianapolis beautiful!

Sincerely,

David Forsell

President 2 Dear Friends of KIB,

We should all be proud—volunteers, donors, staff, and board—when reflecting on 2017, one of the most impactful years in KIB history! We have significantly increased our tree canopy, energized volunteers to pick up tons of trash, engaged youth in life-changing employment opportunities, restored native habitats, helped clean our city’s water resources, and perhaps most importantly, inspired Indianapolis residents to care more deeply about their neighborhoods.

I’m honored and humbled as I reflect on 2017 in my first year of my term as Board Chair. Working with KIB’s staff, board, and community partners means collaborating with Indy’s most passionate advocates for a cleaner, greener, and more connected city. Moving forward, your continued support is critical to our mission; in fact, the value of the time our volunteers donated in 2017 is worth nearly $2.4 million!

Thank you so much for all you do to ensure that together we can help people and nature thrive in Indianapolis.

Warm regards,

Tim George Chair, KIB Board of Directors 3 Vice President, CHA Consulting Our partnerships and collaborations allow us to connect people and nature throughout Indianapolis. People help nature; nature helps people. Pretty adorable, right? KIB Urban Naturalists get to do some really cool things, like hugging the Nowland Oak—a chinquapin oak over 300 years old—at the KIB GreenSpace in the Springdale neighborhood. BOARD 25

2017 DONORS TO KIB 26 STRATEGIC ACTION 2017 marked year one of KIB’s current three-year Strategic Plan (2017–2019). Strategic aims focus on the well-being of people and the environment:

• A cleaner, more beautiful city • A greener, more vibrant city • More capable people who care and are connected

The plan provides staff with a roadmap for better working toward organizational goals while breaking down silos. For example, KIB included tree plantings and public art in events for its litter abatement programs, supporting beautification and environmental goals. This resulted in more engaged neighbors, community building, and individual action.

KIB also created an internal Diversity Task Force made up of staff across all departments. The goal of the Task Force is to make KIB more inclusive and diverse to drive institutional equity. 2017 efforts included revised approaches to job postings, internal evaluation of KIB activities to better serve communities in need, and Undoing Racism training for all staff.

KIB’s staff and board also determined ways to measure the organization’s impact through qualitative and quantitative measures. To put metrics in context, KIB has initiated storytelling efforts, collecting stories from the individuals, neighborhoods, and volunteers impacted by KIB.

7 STRATEGIC ACTION Significantly, the Strategic Plan provides a foundation for KIB’s long-term impacts:

• Contributing to cleaner air and water—by planting 30,000 trees by 2025 • Increasing biodiversity—by restoring 100 acres of habitat by 2020 • Inspiring community action—by engaging 100,000 individuals to volunteer or act independently on behalf of the environment by 2022

KIB continued its long-term research project on habitat restoration along Fall Creek with Dr. Rebecca Dolan of Butler University. Dolan’s students took a plant inventory in 2012 before invasive removal and has inventoried flora every year since—diversity of plants has quadrupled! KIB has also continued working with Dr. Allison O’Malley and her students to evaluate the impact of KIB’s GreenSpaces. Measures include neighbors’ use of and satisfaction with the spaces, community involvement and pride, physical activity, and other social factors.

Additionally, KIB is developing goals to study effective practices for creating cleaner neighborhoods, leading public art installations that reflect and/or enhance community identity, tracking and reporting the health and condition of KIB landscapes, and providing meaningful opportunities for youth development. This past year included new efforts to improve the sustainability of KIB projects by creating the role of Stewardship Manager, responsible for leading maintenance and stewardship operations at past IPL Project GreenSpace and GreenKids (formerly KIB Clubs) locations.

8 NOTABLE COLLABORATIONS 10,000 TREES WITH CITIZENS ENERGY GROUP

Certain areas in the city have combined sewer overflow systems that send a mix of stormwater and raw sewage into streams when we receive more than 1/4 inch of rain—about 6 billion gallons annually. In addition to starting work on a deep tunnel storage system, Citizens Energy Group (CEG) made a 10-year commitment to KIB in 2017 to use trees to reduce sewer overflows and beautify Indianapolis. This partnership guarantees planting and caring for 10,000 trees. KIB has also expanded its mapping to analyze multiple layers of information, including both sociological and ecological data that will inform KIB’s decision making. The system will allow us to track the environmental and socioeconomic impact of our work over time.

RECONNECTING TO OUR WATERWAYS (ROW)

Reconnecting to Our Waterways (ROW) convenes and supports community partners to enhance quality of life, investing in innovation, analysis, cultural advancement, and environmental quality along Indianapolis’ waterways and in adjacent neighborhoods. KIB remains a key community leader and implementation partner in ROW. KIB President David Forsell became co-chair of ROW in 2017. KIB’s VP of Special Initiatives, VP of Program Strategy, and Director of Native Landscapes are all integral to the ROW Steering Committee and ROW Waterway Committees.

9 In the fall of 2017, we started planting a lot more trees! In partnership with CEG, we’re able to plant in areas that could really use some trees. That means more arborists training more volunteers! Hundreds of Lilly employees helped us plant trees, paint murals, clean up litter, and spread a (Guinness World Records title!) message of civic pride and commitment to a cleaner city. NOTABLE COLLABORATIONS LILLY GLOBAL DAY OF SERVICE

For the 10th Lilly Global Day of Service (LGDOS), KIB coordinated efforts to accomplish the following: • Plant a new forest with 1,003 trees at the Shadeland and Brookville interchange • Create a mural and plant native plants to enrich two of KIB’s 2017 GreenSpaces • Clean litter and weeds around Indy, including Twin Aire, a Great Places 2020 neighborhood • Make the world’s largest chalk art display to help share the anti-litter message.

IT’S MY CITY

It’s My City is a three-year effort, designed with the City of Indianapolis, that leverages civic pride for the health of residents who call Indianapolis home. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful played a leading role in the It’s My City collaboration in its first year—the Year of Clean. KIB provided supplies and volunteers to assist the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services and IMPD in several trash sweeps in locations with high reports of trash and illegal dumping.

GREAT PLACES 2020

KIB participated in the Steering Committee and chaired the Livability Committee of Great Places 2020, a community development project managed by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to increase livability, opportunity, vitality, and education in specific Marion County neighborhoods. In 2017, KIB helped select two new Great Places neighborhoods—Twin Aire and King Commons—and is working closely with them on early planning and engagement efforts. 12 PROGRAM REPORT: CLEANING INITIATIVES ADOPT-A-BLOCK

KIB’s Adopt-A-Block program saw nearly 250 more blocks adopted than in the preceding year, with over 1,000 people working to pick up litter and keep their streets clean. 2017 also marked the launch of KIB’s Adopt-A-Block Schools and Adopt-A-Block Business efforts. KIB’s Community Engagement team led program efforts by attending neighborhood meetings, learning more about community needs, and providing ideas for ways to implement the Adopt-A-Block program to improve safety.

GREAT INDY CLEANUP

KIB organizes two large-scale cleanups every year. In addition, neighborhoods can request cleanup resources, including a dumpster, trash bags, and gloves, for KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup from April through October.

Despite our large April cleanup event being postponed due to rain, KIB saw an increased individual commitment to keeping our neighborhoods clean.

13 We planted trees, cleared alleys, picked up litter, and painted crosswalks at the October 2017 Great Indy Cleanup event. We even uncovered some amazing historic sidewalks in Kennedy-King! Urban Naturalists get to flex all sorts of skills. Not only are they leading a lot of our habitat restoration activities, but they also learn about various types of “green-collar” career opportunities PROGRAM REPORT: GREENING INITIATIVES IPL PROJECT GREENSPACE

With the support of Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) and other partners, KIB created new GreenSpaces in three locations in 2017: the historic Athenaeum, in Downtown Indianapolis; Community Caring and Sharing (CC&S), a community center in the Mars Hill neighborhood; and Progress House, a recovery house in the Irish Hill community. KIB’s Stewardship Coordinator evaluated the conditions of 14 current GreenSpaces and outdoor classrooms each month, allowing KIB to track the conditions of these spaces over time. KIB also documented the conditions of spaces developed before 2012, when the current GreenSpace program was formalized. Thanks to generous donors, KIB now has a maintenance fund to reinvest in these places!

HABITAT RESTORATION

KIB employed five college students in 2017 for the Urban Naturalists program, providing opportunities for field work and networking with green-collar professionals. The team worked to maintain green infrastructure as well as water, mulch, prune, and map perennial plantings. Urban Naturalists also removed weeds, cleaned up litter, and engaged with the community.

Led by KIB’s Urban Naturalists, we removed over 6 acres of invasive species and planted about 3.5 acres of native plants, including 90 trees, 394 shrubs, and 5,409 perennials. Nearly half of those native perennials (2,698 plants) went toward the creation of a 2-acre monarch butterfly sanctuary along the Urban Wilderness Trail in White River State Park, the first to be designated a Level (Conservation

Champion) Certified Sustainable Trail by the Indiana Wildlife Federation. 16 PROGRAM REPORT: GREENING INITIATIVES COMMUNITY FORESTRY

In 2017, KIB planted 3,005 trees in strategic locations, surpassing 50,000 total trees planted by KIB since 2006. KIB staff identified priority planting locations using new mapping capabilities, with the goal of maximizing the community, health, and environmental benefits of the trees. Assessing need in this way allows KIB to increase work in high-priority areas while preserving the grassroots nature of the projects, giving people a say in the programs and projects meant to serve them. Over 90% of the trees were species native to Indiana, with 979 of the trees planted classified as “giving trees” (trees that support 200 or more species of moths and butterflies).

KIB enlists a variety of people to care for trees the first three years after planting. These maintenance teams included nearly 100 high school students (employed through KIB’s Youth Tree Team), a dedicated team of volunteers known as Tree Tenders, and contractors. Together, these maintenance teams watered 6,332 trees every week. They also mulched 10,199 trees and pruned 5,416 trees over the course of the summer.

17 Ginko trees, like this one, have been around for millennia. This young tree planter has only been around for a few years, but he may be able to see this tree grow into a giant! Start ‘em early! Every summer KIB employs almost 100 youth to water and maintain thousands of trees all over the city! These youth also gain important skills and have fun. Best summer job ever? Yes. Yes, it is. PROGRAM REPORT: YOUTH PROGRAMMING KIB GREENKIDS (ELEMENTARY SCHOOL)

2017 marked the rebranding of KIB Clubs, reflecting shared goals across KIB programs. The new name—KIB GreenKids—connects the program with IPL Project GreenSpace, which creates pocket parks and greenspaces throughout Indianapolis in the same way GreenKids creates outdoor classrooms.

KIB continued relationships with five schools in 2017, leading after-school nature clubs, arranging for guest speakers and field trips, helping create outdoor classrooms, and providing organizational support and maintenance training for school leaders. GreenKids had 110 club meetings in 2017 and served over 3,000 youth.

YOUTH TREE TEAM (HIGH SCHOOL)

The Youth Tree Team (YTT) plays a vital role in ensuring the survival of KIB’s trees the first three years after planting. In 2017, YTT watered 3,135 trees every week, and over the course of the summer, pruned 1,758 trees. In addition to making a visible difference in the community, youth earned income, learned tree identification and care, and developed job skills recognized through a certification process.

A healthy and happy environment means a healthy and happy community in Indianapolis. WHO WE ARE Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with a mission to engage diverse communities to create vibrant public places, helping people and nature thrive. Annually, KIB works with approximately 20,000 volunteers on nearly 900 community projects across Marion County.

WHAT WE DO We’re the ones who smile when planting trees in the rain, who laugh with friends as we pick trash off our neighborhood streets, and who care very deeply about the health, happiness, and greenness of our city. We see a beautiful place to call home—one that is loved and cared for by the community and ecologically rich with plants, trees, and pollinators.

How do we do it? We plant trees, create greenspaces, engage students in nature, restore urban habitat, and pick up litter with the help of volunteers and donors like you.

THANK YOU!
