Penweddig’s New Inventions Succeed Again! The work of three of Penweddig’s Design and Technology A-level students was chosen to be displayed in North and South , recently. WJEC’s Innovative Awards celebrate different and innovative A-level DT work of a high standard.

A team from the Assembly, industry, business, higher education and WJEC chose the 30 best projects in Wales. The projects of Cern Hyde, Lefi Jones and Kathryn Botting were three of the successful 30. Cern’s invention is the ‘Beat Box’ Cern Hyde which plays very loud music! Lefi’s ‘Stash/Crash’ is a portable chair for the beach which can also carry items and Kathryn’s work is beachwear. The items of clothing can be combined to be worn as one or independently to create a different look. Their work was shown in Venue Cymru, Llandudno and in the SWALEC stadium in in October.

Youth Music Theatre UK Sam Ebenezer yr. 12 attended a course in London over the summer. He spent three weeks training and practising for the show ‘Korczak’, a story from the Second World War. Janusz Korczak ran an orphanage for 192 Jewish and Catholic children in Warsaw and in August 1942 they were sent to Treblinka concentration camp. Although Korczak was given numerous opportunities to remain behind, he decided that he would have to look after the children on their journey and neither he nor the children were seen again. Following weeks of training in Kingston upon Thames, Sam went on to play the part of one of the children, Piotr, in six performances in the Rose Theatre, Kingston.

Activities included: Origami (Folding paper), Trying on Kimono (Japanese traditional clothes), Calligraphy, Making Sushi and experimenting with Hashi (chopsticks). Homework Club Every night the school runs a Homework Club where pupils can use the Resource Centre’s facilities during out-of-school hours. The club starts at 3.30 and a member of staff is present to assist pupils with their work, especially with Welsh spelling and grammar. The club ends at 4.30 and 4.00 on Fridays. There is a page dedicated to independent learning on the school’s website which includes a handbook of Welsh terms, the independent learning timetable and a link to the Board’s support service.

5 Humanitarian Week 2011 On the fourteenth of November, a week of raising money began in the school, called Humanitarian Week. Year twelve students had the responsibility of raising money for the school’s charity fund. We advertised and promoted the week’s events to the rest of the school.

It was decided that there would be a cake stall on the street every break and lunchtime so this responsibility was on the remainder of the pupils to cook. On Monday the 14th of November a group of students and teachers agreed to have cream pies thrown at them. This attracted a full audience in the hall and they had the opportunity to bid to throw the pies.

On Tuesday the fifteenth, the brave boys of year twelve went through the experience of having their legs waxed. Once again the hall was full and the girls enjoyed watching the boys suffer!

With the money quickly increasing, a significant sum was raised as a result of the hockey game between the girls and boys of the sixth form on the school fields at lunch time. It was great fun and the supporters shouted and cheered, but despite the enthusiastic support for the boys, the girls won 3-0.

The week went ahead successfully and the ‘Bushtucker Trials’ added to the sums raised. This was an opportunity for more brave teachers and students to taste horrible foods such as Weetabix and tomato sauce! It was a sweeping success for the fund.

Friday the eighteenth was a big day for year twelve students because this was their opportunity to put on a show for the rest of the school. One was held in the morning for the lower school and one in the afternoon for the upper school. The last-minute practice paid its way because the audience’s response was very positive. The teachers had the pleasure of watching the sixth-form making fools of themselves and so this was one of the week’s biggest successes! People paid 50p at the door so the collection pot filled to the brim! This was an excellent conclusion to the week; everyone enjoyed and year twelve’s activities paid off, with a significant sum of money raised. Catrin Walters
