The title, Standing Stone, refers to both the Rollright Stones and the journey to self-actualisation of the American protagonist, Barbara Shaunaky, as she gradually develops inner strength and independence. In seeking to understand the mystery shrouding her birth, Barbara travels through contemporary Wales, back in time to nineteenth century England and earlier still to the fifteenth century and Mother Shipton to whom myth credits the formation of the Rollright Standing Stones. The maid/mother/crone triptych as archetype forms a repeated thread throughout the novel as an ancient choice affects consequence influencing each succeeding time period. The commentary seeks to understand and classify Standing Stone within works of fiction. The nature of story is explored by examining what story is and how Standing Stone is positioned in relation to genre – specifically historic, supernatural, and magical realism as well as classification – particularly Young Adult, Adult and Crossover fiction. In doing so I explore the relation of plot and theme, language, symbols, archetypes, as well as fore- and backshadowing. Standing Stone is analysed by comparing the works of Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, Kate Mosse and others. My intent in both Standing Stone and its accompanying analysis, Stepping Stones to Standing Stone, was to understand the concept of story; the classifications of story; and to examine and understand the term ‘Crossover’ in relation to fictive genre literature. 9 10 g Acknowledgements h In spite of the fact that writing is thought to be a solo endeavour, it is replete with many helpful hands. She could see the door was slightly ajar, but couldn’t believe that her parents were arguing. “I won’t have Barbara repeat… ” Repeat what? Barbara strained to hear but the balance of the sentence was muffled. Her mother must have turned away. Ignoring Lena’s oft spoken words about eavesdroppers never hearing anything good about themselves, Barbara leaned in closer, peeking through the crack until she could see her parents standing across the room near her dad’s desk. “Harve,” her mother said, “I know she’s starting college but she just turned fifteen. She tries too hard to fit in.” Lena paused, “It’s a recipe for disaster and she’s already been through so much.” Why can’t she be happy for me? Barbara felt her temper rising as old doubts began to assail her. She strained to listen. Her father sighed. “I haven’t forgotten her tears and the tantrums after we returned from the UK or the months of therapy that followed. I never thought we’d be a normal family, but we worked through it. At some point, Lena, we’ve got to let her grow up.” UK? When had she ever been abroad? Barbara’s question was swept away by her mother’s outburst. “Harve, how exactly do you expect her to cope? She’ll be with kids who’re five to ten years older than she is.” Lena’s voice quavered, filling with tears. “She’s only fifteen. Think of the temptations she’ll face. I couldn’t bear it if…” Her mother’s words were lost again as Lena covered her face. 15 “Sweetheart, she needs to find a way,” he said.

    ZULU VISITS UK by Bill Cainan Lidizwe Dalton Ngobese is currently employed as a tour guide at the Isandlwana Lodge in KwaZulu Natal. He is the great great grandson of Sihayo and the great grandson of Mehlokazulu. In June of 2010 he was able, due to a kind benefactor, to visit the UK for the first time. Dalton planned a five day itinerary, the main aim of which was to visit the SWB Museum at Brecon. Once the visit was confirmed the curator of the Museum, Martin Everett, rang me to ask if I would be willing to host Dalton while he was in UK. Having met Dalton a few times in KZN I was delighted to accept the offer. Dalton’s visit coincided with the UK’s Armed Forces Day which, in 2010, was being held in Cardiff with HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, taking the salute. The Prince was also scheduled to open “Firepower”, the museum of the Welsh Soldier, which was located within Cardiff Castle. A plan quickly took shape involving Dalton in full Zulu regalia and myself in a uniform of a Corporal of the 24th to be in attendance at the entrance to the Museum. Dalton was also keen to visit some of the more famous Welsh castles on his visit. The diary of his visit is as follows: Wednesday 23rd June: Dalton arrives at Cardiff airport having flown from Jo’burg via Schipol. There were a few problems with the UK’s Border Agency , but when Dalton produced the formal invite to the opening of “Firepower” in Cardiff (TO BE ATTENDED BY HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES), things seemed to get a bit easier! I then drove Dalton the 50 miles to Brecon and he was given a quick tour of the Museum by Martin Everett (the Curator) and Celia Green (the Customer Services Manager).

This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have theirwork tied down by the now antiquated notion of the "group". Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic.

    HISTORY of ABERYSTWYTH We all think of Aberystwyth as a seaside resort town. The presence of the ruined castle suggests a coloured medieval history, fraught with battles and land forever changing hands between powerful rulers. However, there was evidence of human activity in Aberystwyth long before this time, so we thought it might be worth going through the history of Aberyst- wyth right from the start. The earliest recorded human activity in Aberystwyth area dates back to around 11,500 years ago during the mesolithic period. The mesolithic period signalled the end of a long and arduous ice age, which saw most of the worlds surface covered in ice, leav- ing only the most hardy plants and animals to survive. As the ice retreaded in Mid Wales, this revealed large supplies of stone, including flint at Tan-Y-Bwlch which lies at the foot of Pen Dinas hill. There is strong evidence that the area was used for flint knapping, which involved the shaping of the flint deposits left behind by the retreating ice in order to make weapons for hunting for hunting animals. The flint could be shaped into sharp points, which could be used as primitive spears and other equipment, used by the hunter gatherer to obtain food. Around 3000 years ago there is evidence of an early Celtic ringfort on the site of Pen Dinas. The ringfort is a circular fortified set- tlement which was common throughout Northern Europe in the Bronze and Iron ages. What remains of this particular example at Aberystwyth is now located on private land on Pen Dinas, and can only be accessed by arrangement.

    Price £2.50 Number 1 October 2003 A warm welcome to the Forum’s first Newsletter and a big thank you to all of the contributers who have produced articles for this issue. Thanks also to Lin Norton for producing the cover heading. As Editor, producing this Newsletter has been very much a steep learning curve, particularly getting to grips with ‘new technology’ so if there are any glitches in what you actually receive please bear with me. We had intended producing this Newsletter in two formats, electronic and hard copy, in order to keep the costs down and speed up distribution. However, due to the size of the finished copy it is probably too large to send to most of you as an e-mail attachment so, for the time being, we are producing it in hard copy format. Hopefully, in due course, we will be able overcome this problem so that those of you able to receive electronic communications can receive it in glorious technicolor. This first issue covers a wide range of topics from planning issues to individual building stones as well as Forum business, short notes and the first field meeting report. Jonathan Adams’ article on Cardiff’s Millennium Centre is a fore-taster for the field trip on 29th November the details of which, along with those of all of the Forum’s other meetings until the end of 2004 are to be found elsewhere in the Newsletter. We raised £955! Particular credit goes to Peter Gardner, who once again nurtured choice sweet-pea seedlings of named varieties and sold them, individually potted, at a table in the middle of the hall. I only secured one, a dark blue, but it’s now six feet tall and flowering profusely in a pot by my front door. We catch the scent as we go in and out. Joy Neal provided some extremely choice houseplants, most of which were snapped up in minutes. Divided chunks of good garden perennials and new seedling veg and flowers also sold very well. Jan Eldridge provided us with a really professional banner: attached to the railings at the Penparcau roundabout for two weeks prior to the sale, this increased our visibility to the public, who queued eagerly till the doors opened. Before the doors opened The summer excursions run by John and Sue Wildig have also been well subscribed and offered a varied and fascinating range of experiences.

    Eisteddfod y DDOLEN 2021 Pan nad oes unman i fynd, man a man ceisio cael pobl i gystadlu mewn Eisteddfod! Arferai papur bro Y DDOLEN gynnal Eisteddfod lenyddol yn flynyddol ond bu saib ers sawl blwyddyn. Roedd eleni yn teimlo gystal amser ac unrhywbryd i ail gynnau’r fflam! Aed ati i lunio casgliad o gystadlaethau amrywiol o limrig i goginio! Yn ogystal roedd modd ennill y gadair gyfforddus ddefnyddiol drwy gystadlu yn y stori neu gerdd ddigri.
