After years of studying, I can proudly say that I finished eve- rything and that I am graduated. My studying career was a quite a long one and not always that easy, but it has been a wonderful time where I have learned many things and developed myself. The pro- cess of the master thesis, from the beginning till the end, reflects these previous years perfectly. Alt- hough I am the one who will receive the degree, I could not have done this without the support and help of many during the years of studying in general and during the writing of this thesis in particular. Therefore I would like to thank the ones who helped and supported me. I want to start by thanking my colleagues at Estonian Holidays and especially Maila Saar, Lars Saar and Mari-Liis Makke.

It is also available online: http://www.borenv.net/BER/pdfs/ber12/ber12-653.pdf Introduction Estonia is located in a transition zone between regions having a maritime climate in the west and continental climate in the east and is a relatively small country (45,227 km2), but its geographical location between the Fenno-scandian Shield and East European Platform and comparatively long coastline (over 4000 km) due to numerous peninsulas, bays and islands (>1,500 island), results in a variety of shore types and ecosystems. The western coast is exposed to waves generated by prevailing westerly winds, with NW waves dominant along the north-facing segment beside the Gulf of Finland, contrasting with southern relatively sheltered sectors located on the inner coasts of islands and along the Gulf of Livonia (Riga). The coastline classification is based on the concept of wave processes straightening initial irregular outlines via erosion of Capes/bay deposition, or a combination (Orviku, 1974, Orviku and Granö, 1992, Gudelis, 1967). Much coast (77%) is irregular with the geological composition of Capes and bays being either hard bedrock or unconsolidated Quaternary deposits, notably glacial drift.

  • Development and Protection of the Coasts in the Tallinn Area
Proc. Estonian Acad. Sci. Geol., 2005, 54, 2, 119–136 Development and protection of the coasts in the Tallinn area Heino Levalda and Ain Valdmannb a Estonian Maritime Academy, Mustakivi 25, 13912 Tallinn, Estonia; [email protected] b Tallinn Municipal Engineering Services Department, Mündi 2, 10146 Tallinn, Estonia; [email protected] Received 16 February 2005, in revised form 14 April 2005 Abstract. The paper deals with the protection of the coastal areas of Tallinn and their primary development into harbours. The coast and coastal buildings are endangered by strong storm waves, especially in case of a high sea accompanying the storm. Due to the influence of waves, the coastal terrace recedes towards the land; in the bays the sands are whether deposited or swept away. Storms have caused major destruction to the coasts of Aegna Island and the Kakumäe Peninsula. The coastal area owners, the local authorities, and the organs of the state should take measures to protect the coasts through mutual cooperation and improvement of the valid legislation. The coasts and harbours within the boundaries of Tallinn are predominantly state-owned. In planning the development of the harbours it is necessary to reckon with the increase in passenger transport and sea tourism, environmental protection, safety and economic interests of the city, which have so far been some- what neglected. Tallinn Municipality has begun to rearrange the administration of the coasts and harbours located within the city borders. Muuga Harbour plays a special role in further protection of coasts and development of harbours and could take over a major part of cargo transport within the boundaries of Tallinn.
