Dudakov . 333 Index . 336 n the early XX century a fake document titled The Protocols of the Elders of Zion rose from the depths of the Russian se- I cret police. This falsification was spread by the White emi- gres and greatly affected Hitler’s ideas and the Nazi practices. Although European sources, which are included in the body of the fake and which date back to the XIX century, had been found, it remained unclear why The Protocols surfaced in Russia of all places. In this book an Israeli historian and culturologist Savely Dudakov (1939–2017) conducts a detailed research of this is- sue. He was the first to dig out the branches of Russian religious, anti- Judaic, and anti-M asonic literature and a wide range of pulp fiction of the mid- and late- XIX century from under the boulders of time. He brought to light the main mythologems of the fake in the form of a “Judeo- Masonic conspiracy theory.” Dudakov’s work provides a long list of publications, many of which are included into historical literature and scholarship for the first time. The propaganda ofThe Protocols ideas lives on as anti- Semitism, “fight against Zionism,” and Islamic fundamentalism. This makesThe History of a Myth a work of current interest. IN PLACE OF A FOREWORD Honorary ProfessorEfim of ParisEtkind Nanterre University (From review of the first Russian edition, Moscow 1993) avely Dudakov’s work presents a wide-ranging research dedicat- ed to the history of social thought and literature in Russia in the SXIX and XX centuries. The subject chosen by the author had nev- er been researched by historians as a whole, although separate essays on certain time periods do exist. However, there had been no general- ized picture of the development of the anti- Judaic thinking, therefore this work is a great achievement of S. Dudakov. The four volumes ofL’histoire de l’antisémitisme by Leon Poliakov is a purely historical work and as such cannot compete with the re- search of S. Dudakov. Besides, Dudakov gives brief but deep and ac- curate characterizations of a number of interesting authors. Among them are J. Przecławski — ​the pages dedicated to him are brilliant, N. Y. Danilevsky, Y. Brafman, B. M. Markevich, Vs. Krestovsky, S.. K Efron-Lit vin, S. A. Nilus et al. Every one of these authors deserves a serious study, despite the vulgarity and ridiculousness of their ideas and theories. S. Dudakov, as a rule, can present the views alien to him with surprising calm, balance, and logic. The reader shall learn that each of the above- mentioned authors is a villain, with pogroms and prison camps on his conscience as a result of a seemingly abstract discourse, the reader shall learn it from an aus- tere historical narration, because the author does not impose his emo- tions on the reader and does not allow himself either sarcasm or de- rogatory phrases. Some of these authors we barely remember, or know of them only from doubtful sources. For example, Boleslav Markevich 1 ✡ Savely Dudakov The History of a Myth has been completely forgotten as an anti- Judaic novelist. The Concise Literary Encyclopedia (1967) informs us that he had reported the ac- tivists of the liberation movement, cruelly bullied Saltykov- Shchedrin, the narodniks and Turgenev, and wrote anti-nihilistic novels with aris- tocratic monarchists as protagonists. We know that the word “Jew” was unofficially banned in Brezhnev’s time. However, the entry for Markevich seems almost comical: it means that Markevich cannot be labeled as anti- Semitist. But this was his main trait! Markevich is known in Russian literary history due to the fact that A. K. Tolstoy counted him as his closest friend and wrote many highly meaningful letters to him. S. Dudakov notes quite fairly that A. K. Tolstoy disapproved of his friend’s racism. The traditions of the XIX century, however, were such that irrec- oncilable ideological opponents could remain friends and respect and even love one another. S. Dudakov analyses the views of Russian authors very well, and even wisely, and does not agree with the common opinion of their treatment of Jews. His study of A. S. Pushkin’s poem A Black Shawl is convincing as well as his analysis of N. V. Gogol’s Taras Bulba. 2 PREFACE A Forgery of the Tsarist Secret Police from the Perspective of Twenty-First Century SemyonWashington Reznik he book “Anti- Semitic Literature of the XIX–XX centuries and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” occupies the central Tspot in the significant and very substantive literary legacy of the Israeli historian, writer, and scholar of literature Savely Dudakov (1939–2017). It is based on the material of his Grand PhD thesis that Dudakov had defended at the University of Jerusalem. The book was first published in Moscow in 1993 by the publish- ing house “Nauka.” This miracle happened mostly thanks to the ef- forts of Savely’s close friend, D. A. Chernyakhovsky. A renowned Moscow psychiatrist and a man of vast knowledge and various inter- ests, Chernyakhovsky had many friends and acquaintances, some of them leading scientists and scholars. He collected several reviews of Savely Dudakov’s manuscript from most respectable and influential scholars, among them a well-known linguist and culturologist, a cor- responding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (and later an academician) S. S. Averintsev. The reviews were such that the leading publisher of the Academy of Sciences could not reject the manuscript. The book saw light as generally edited by D. A. Chernyakhovsky, but not under the author’s title. The title wasThe History of a Myth and the subtitle was Essays on Russian Literature of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. A short editor’s abstract on the flipside of the title page said: “The author of the book being offered to the reader, a famous Israeli scholar Savely Dudakov, has analysed consistently and in detail the 3 ✡ Savely Dudakov The History of a Myth specifics of the development of literature and of social and political thought in Russia in the second half of the nineteenth and early twen- tieth century. He pays special attention to mass popular fiction of the time, such as the works by forgotten authors of the ‘second rank’ — ​ Vs. Krestovsky, B. Markevich, S. Efron, N. Wagner, et al.” So, what is the book about? As I was informed by a close friend of Savely Dudakov, Professor Mikhail Golubovsky, the back of the cover had another abstract that said that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a fake forged by the Tsar’s secret police. Not much of a surprise there, but before the book was published, Chernyakhovsky was ordered to replace the cover, lest the printed copies be destroyed. The situation was saved by an artist who suggested a truly Solomonic solution: to remove the abstract. This was done. “For two days the members of the historical editing team and even some of their family members were wiping the unfortunate abstract off five thousand copies with cotton balls soaked in acetone!” (S.

The basic, literal meaning of the verb conspire (from the Latin conspira- re and its derivative, conspiratio, “agreement, union, unanimity”) is “to breathe together,” whereby breathing together was taken to mean “to agree, to concur to one end,” whether that purpose be good or evil (e.g. Genesis 37,18; “They con- spired against [Joseph] to slay him”). Since the middle of the fourteenth century conspiracy has been used in English to mean, first and foremost, “a plotting of evil, unlawful design; a combination of persons for an evil purpose.” The word conspire has, thus, assumed primarily negative connotations: “to secretly plot or make plans together, often with the intention to bring bad or illegal results.”1 Most conspiracy theories are generated in times of crisis. They occupy the space between political constellations and psychological mechanisms.     Appendix: Machiavelli in Post-Stalin Russia, 1953–98 Stalin’s death in March 1953 marked a decisive change in the way in which the Soviet state was organized, and in the way in which the state related to its own society. The ‘cult’ of personality, of illegality and arbitrary government was denounced. It was heralded as a return to ‘Leninist’ norms of government (presumably the Lenin of 1922 rather than the Lenin of 1918), with a new emphasis on socialist ‘morality’. Nevertheless, the USSR remained a highly authoritarian, highly secretive state, in which legal norms were applied selec- tively. Not surprisingly, the Soviet regime’s attitude to Machiavelli remained extremely guarded.1 In the 1950s a small number of works on political thought and philosophy do mention him.2 In 1958 A. A. Zimin published his article on Peresvetov, with its speculations concerning the early influence of Machiavelli in Russia.3 A scholarly article by F. De Sanktis in 1964 was one of the few works of note in 1960s on Machiavelli.4 One important development in this period was the beginnings of a discussion on the work of Friedrich Meinecke and the concept of raison d’état (ideya gosudarstvennogo razuma) in which the ideas of Machiavelli were so central.5 Only in the 1970 and 1980s did there begin to develop a substantial scholarly literature about Machiavelli.6 At the same time, Machiavelli is thus much less at the centre of political issues – the problem of order, the construction of a new state – than was the case in the early decades of Soviet power.

Theoretical Framework The exact chronology of the rise of modern Antisemitism as ideology and move- ment remains unfathomable. Historians mention various insufficient and debatable factors. Hostility toward Jews links not with their numbers, economic standing, or political substance, because the birthplace of modern Antisemitism saw little of Jewish population or influential. Instead, the areas with the largest and most culturally distinct Jewish communities experienced the anti-Jewish movement at a later stage in the form of a secondary phenomenon, which does not mean they held an unequivocally positive image of the Jew. Hannah Arendt in The Origin of Totalitarianism (1951) associated the rise of Antisemitism with the role played in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries by the “Court Jews” and, later, the wealthy bankers who funded monarchs and governments. Although the fig- ures of the Rothschild’s or Baron Hirsch strongly influenced the imagination of the public and the Jews themselves, their actual influence was not significant enough to cause such a strong response in the political life of several European nations.104 Instead, the Jewish tycoons symbolized the audacious “insolence,” with which these few families exceeded their role of pariahs and entered universally accepted positions in the society. In other words, they either drawn opposition against the principle of equal opportunities or demonstrated its absence. As soon as the idea of the inevitability of Jewish emancipation spread, the names of the tycoons lost their importance, even though they did not completely disappear from Antisemitic rhetoric.

The problem is approached by offering two distinct perspectives on the Black Hundred. First, a broad overview of the movement is presented. The focus here is on the headquarter branches of Black Hundred organizations in St. Petersburg, but these chapters also look at the activities of many different provincial branches, relating trends in the provinces to events in the center in order to draw conclusions about the nature of the overall movement.

    The Protocols of the Elders of Zion The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion (Russian: "Протоколы сионских мудрецов" or "Сионские протоколы") is one of many titles given to an antisemitic text purporting to describe a plan to achieve global domination by the Jewish people. Following its first public publication in 1903 in the Russian Empire, a series of articles printed in The Times in 1921 revealed that much of the material was directly plagiarized from earlier works of political satire unrelated to Jews. [1] Publication history The Protocols appeared in print in the Russian Empire as early as 1903. The anti-Semitic tract was published in Znamya , a Black Hundreds newspaper owned by Pavel Krushevan, as a serialized set of articles. It appeared again in 1905 as a final chapter (Chapter XII) of a second edition of Velikoe v malom i antikhrist (The Great in the Small & Antichrist), a book by Serge Nilus. In 1906 it appeared in pamphlet form edited by G. Butmi. [1] These first three (and subsequently more) Russian language imprints were published and circulated in the Russian Empire during 1903–1906 period as a tool for scapegoating Jews, blamed by the monarchists for the defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and the 1905 Russian Revolution. Common to all three texts is the idea that Jews aim for world domination. Since The Protocols are presented as merely a document, the front matter and back matter are needed to explain its alleged origin. The diverse imprints, however, are mutually inconsistent. The general claim is that the document was stolen from a secret Jewish organization.

Jews fleeing Nazi Germany’s increasingly anti- Semitic measures encountered closed doors everywhere they turned. Why had enmity toward European Jewry reached such extreme heights? How did the levels of anti-Semitism in the 1930s compare to those of earlier decades? Did anti-Semitism vary in content and intensity across societies? For example, were Germans more anti-Semitic than their European neighbors, and, if so, why? How does anti-Semitism differ from other forms of religious, racial, and ethnic prejudice? In pursuit of answers to these questions, William I. Brustein offers the first truly systematic comparative and empirical examination of anti-Semitism in Europe before the Holocaust. Brustein proposes that European anti-Semitism flowed from religious, racial, economic, and po- litical roots, which became enflamed by economic distress, rising Jewish immigration, and socialist success. As science and technology develop, faith in religion declines. This assumption has been shared by those who applaud and those who regret it. On the one side, for example, A. N. Wilson laments the progress of unbelief in the last two hundred years. In God’s Funeral, the title borrowed from Thomas Hardy’s dirge for ‘our myth’s oblivion’, Wilson endorses Thomas Carlyle’s doleful assessment of the threshold event of the new era: ‘What had been poured forth at the French Revolution was something rather more destructive than the vials of the Apocalypse. It was the dawning of the Modern’.
