1. On the Endeavor of the Way Bendō-wa All buddha tathagatas who individually transmit inconceivable dharma, actualizing unsurpassable, complete enlightenment, have a wondrous art, supreme and unconditioned. Receptive samadhi is its mark; only buddhas transmit it to buddhas without veering off. Sitting upright, practicing Zen, is the authentic gate to free yourself in the unconfined realm of this samadhi. Although this inconceivable dharma is abundant in each person, it is not actualized without practice, and it is not experienced without realization. When you release it, it fills your hand—how could it be limited to one or many? When you speak it, it fills your mouth—it is not bounded by length or width. All buddhas continuously abide in this dharma, and do not leave traces of consciousness about where they are. Sentient beings continuously move about in this dharma, but where they are is not clear in their consciousness. The concentrated endeavor of the way I am speaking of allows all things to come forth in realization to practice going beyond in the path of letting go. Passing through the barrier [of dualism] and dropping off limitations in this way, how could you be hindered by nodes in bamboo or knots in wood [concepts and theories]? * After the aspiration for enlightenment arose, I began to search for dharma, visiting teachers at various places in our country. Then I met priest Myozen, of the Kennin Monastery, with whom I trained for nine years, and thus I learned a little about the teaching of the Rinzai School. Priest Myozen alone, as a senior disciple of ancestor Eisai, authentically received transmittion of the unsurpassable buddha dharma from him; no one can be compared with him. -

Much of this emphasis on the winning vs. losing dichotomy comes from exponential growth in professional sports and business-oriented intercollegiate athletics. Sports are big business. Now parents of young children are often pushing the win vs. lose concept beginning with teams for very young children through high school sports. This dissertation has three hypotheses: While dichotomous characterizations of sporting achievement enjoy degrees of validity, they are insufficient; these insufficiencies can be shown metaphysically and normatively, and; traditions and practices of Zen Buddhism can be used effectively as a source for rival conceptions of sporting achievement. This study examines winning and losing from a Western perspective by examining dualisms and dichotomies, complementary pairs, and Darwinian roots of dichotomies. Then it examines the nature of sporting tests, test variations and related meanings, test contingencies and related meanings, the complexity and nature of sporting contests, test-contest relationships, and seven types of winning ~ losing. -

Patriarch/Matriarch→CHAN←Tathagata (Buddha) ZEN Harmonization Discrepancy INTRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recently, a seasoned practitioner asked about the relationship between Patriarch (or Matriarch) Chan and Tathagata Chan, their “harmonization” (interdependence) and “discrepancy” (independence). In response, Guohan takes “Patriarch/Matriarch Chan and Tathagata Chan: Sameness in Source and Sameness in Path / Sameness in Source and Difference in Path” as the subject, and gives a commentary on it according to the following information: (1) Related sutras and sastras such as The Diamond Sutra, The Sutra of Complete Enlightenment, The Mahaprajnaparamita Sastra, etc. (2) Patriarchs' discourses such as The Platform Sutra, The Transmission of the Lamp, The Compendium of Five Lamps, etc. (3) Gongans and anecdotes such as The Blue Cliff Record, The Gateless Gate, etc. Guohan is compelled to share with all Chan practitioners by way of “pointing a finger at the moon”, helping them walk the path of “returning directly home to their true nature”. Ultimately, what is the “moon”? What is the “finger”? Lesson 2: What Is Zen?
Lesson 2: What is Zen? Zen- is a Japanese word derived from the Chinese word “Chan” which has its roots from India from the Sanskrit word “Dhyana” or in Pali it is called “Jhana”. In Vietnam it is called “Thien”. Dhyana – refers to meditation or meditative states. Dhyana refers to a practice which helps one separate illusion from reality to help attain the ultimate goal of Moksha. Moksha means ultimate release, to completely let go. It is the highest state of a meditative practice. How do you get to the highest state of meditative practice? By doing it! Zen in Buddhism is a school in one of the three main sect of Buddhism: The Mahayana Sect. The teachings of Zen are said to be the most direct method of attaining awakening and liberation within one’s life time by one’s own effort as taught by the Buddha. Zen transmission is said to stem from the Flower Sermon of the Buddha in which during a discourse he suddenly held up a flower in his hand and was silent. All the disciples of the Buddha at that time was bewildered about the Buddha’s actions and wondered what he meant. Only Mahakassapa smiled. The Buddha then said Mahakassapa is the only worthy successor who understood his teachings. Mahakassapa became the first Patriarch of Zen in India. The profound wisdom of understanding without words was then passed on from teacher to student from one generation to the next, to spread the teachings of the Buddha. Zen came to China and prospered through the 28 th Patriarch of India, the Boddhidharma, who is also the first Patriarch of Zen in China. -

All practitioners still in the barrel of black pitch, who want to penetrate through this great matter, please directly let go of all complications of consciousness, so as to ultimately realize “There is absolutely no dust in the mirror of Caoxi”.
