On Taman Ujung Bali Architecture I Gede Mugi RAHARJA Interior Design Department, Faculty of Visual Art and Design, Indonesia Institute of the Arts Denpasar [email protected] Abstract: Indonesia had absorbed various cultures since ancient times, caused the local cultures were enriched with sign language. However, signs on the traditional culture in Indonesia are more symbolic in nature. Interestingly, East and West cross- cultural sign was encountered in Bali, on Sukasada Park design, in Ujung Village, Karangasem regency. The park which was known as Taman Ujung was a legacy of Karangasem Kingdom. This article was compiled from the results of research conducted in 1999, 2012 and 2016. The latest study was specifically conducted to examine the signs on the design of Taman Ujung. Therefore, this study used a semiotic approach, which deals with the science of signs. Such signs could be seen in the form of design, material’s quality and decoration of the building. The pavilion, placed in the middle of the pond caused Taman Ujung was different from the traditional Balinese garden in general. The Pavilion, called Gili, became a sign of the influence of modern western architecture. The use of concrete construction and decorative concrete mold were signs of the influence of western technology. Their decorative Karang Bentala and a lion with a crown were related to the Royal Dutch symbol mark. This sign implies the meaning of good relations between Karangasem Kingdom and Netherlands’ Kingdom in the past. Keywords: Symbolic, Cross-cultural, Pavilion, Gili, Lion INTRODUCTION Semiotics refers to signs in Greek, which has shown an increasingly important influence since the last four decades. Walker (2010: xxiii), observed that semiotics had developed into a model approach in various scientific disciplines such as social, political, media, art, architecture, fashion, advertising design, popular culture, mass culture, youth culture, and subcultures. According to Aart van Zoest (1993: 49), culture is the result of a group of skills to recognize, interpret, and produce signs in the same way. However, signs in one culture cannot be understood by others cultures because of their specificities. In the global era, the cross-cultural aspects of signs needs to be further explored as media communication has broken down cultural barriers between countries. Since ancient times Indonesia, has absorbed various cultures causing a very rich local culture that fuses aspects of the East and the West. Evidence of this cross-cultural fertilization has been encountered in the Bali area in the design Sukasada Park, in the village of Ujung, Karangasem Regency. The park was known as Taman Ujung, King of Karangasem Kingdom’s heritage park. The pavilion, placed in the middle of the pond caused is different from the traditional Balinese garden. Based on the assessment of its visual signs, this paper explores aspects of cross-cultural representation present in Taman Ujung. This paper is the result of research on Taman Ujung conducted in 1999, 2012 and 2016 by author using ancient documents from several sources, mainly from Puri Karangasem families. The palace was originally known as Taman Sukasada, known as Taman Ujung, because its location in the Ujung Village, Karangasem Regency, Bali Province. Also known as the ‘Water Palace’ its design contains cross-cultural elements of Eastern and Western origin. The essence of the semiotic theory used in this paper was to approach the design elements of the palace as a visual text (Adams, 1996: 133) helping designers understand the language of

Should, however, the epithet 'well-known' have prompted an in- quisitive reader to investigate the existing literature in search of further information on the Sërat Dërmagandul, then he would not have been long in finding that, for instance, neither in the Leiden catalogues of Javanese MSS. nor in the abstracts of Javanese printed books in the library of the (former) Batavia Society at Jakarta is a work of this name mentioned, let alone described.2 Nor was a Sërat Dërmagandul recorded by Dr Poerbatjaraka in his Alphabetical List of Javanese MSS. in the library of the (former) Batavia Society.3 Even if he continued his research by Consulting what was published after 1933, he would not find a summary of the work in question until 1939.

JORDAAN The Sailendras, the Status of the Ksatriya Theory, and the Development of Hindu- Javanese Temple Architecture Introduction The reconstruction of the history of Java, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula from the eighth to the twelfth century AD1 is still greatly hampered by the unsolved problem of the origin of the Sailendra dynasty. The reference to the name Sailendra in a number of dated Central Javanese inscriptions (Kalasan 778, Kelurak 782), an undated inscription found in the Thai part of the Malay Peninsula (Ligor B, in or shortly after 775), and a few inscriptions from both North and South India (Nalanda circa 859, Charter of Leyden 1089-1090) inspired R.C. Majumdar (1933, 1934) to posit the existence of a Sailendra empire, which, at the height of its glory, in the early ninth century, suppos- edly embraced large parts of the Indo-Malay archipelago (the Malay Penin- sula, Sumatra, and parts of Java) as well as of the Southeast Asian mainland. Majumdar suggested that the Sailendras originated from Kaliriga in India and, travelling by way of Lower Burma, migrated to the northern part of the Malay Peninsula, whence they ruled over their new kingdom, which he des- ignated 'Malayasia'. In the ensuing scholarly debate, various of Majumdar's ideas were dis- puted.

As the Company became more involved in Javanese affairs, it consolidated its relationship with local native authorities, whom it termed ’’Regents,” simplifying the disparate hierarchies of court officials and local chiefs into a somewhat more orderly network of loosely-controlled headmen and agents.1 Subsequent administrations and colonial theorists made a virtue of necessity, elevating the Company’s pragmatic accommodations into a colonial philosophy, and finding new political benefits in old insti­ tutions. This use of existing elites and structures was most obvious in the four indirectly ruled Principalities (Vorstenlanden) of Central Java, but it was also characteristic of the ’’government lands.” Here, too, Batavia tended to recruit its native officials from the estab­ lished priyayi (aristocratic, administrative) class, so that tradition­ al priyayi authority would serve Dutch interests. * This essay is based on material collected during dissertation research in the Netherlands and Java during 1969 and 1970.

    Bali, Hong Kong, and San Francisco Wednesday, March 02 Landing in Hong Kong, we arrived too early (06:00) to be informed of the departure gate for our connecting flight, Cathay Pacific 785, scheduled to depart at 10:15. That would be announced later. But in the meantime we could go to the duty free shop. Liz had learned that the tax rate for liquor in Bali was quite steep but we could bring two bottles into the country. We were sure that would be more than enough. Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport (DPS), is located in southern Bali, 13 km south of Denpasar. The International terminal has a Balinese architectural theme and has separate departure and arrival halls. Major renovation has taken place since 2011 and work continues to make improvements to both the international and domestic terminals. Once we cleared security and immigration checkpoints we entered the terminal and began looking for a World Spree representative. Since San Francisco, we had met several couples who also were on our tour. We could see some of them and others, all trying to find a point of contact. Ultimately we did 235 locate our guide who was trying to hold up a World Spree placard while also trying to use the back of it to check off names of our group members. Situated in the tropics close to the equator, Bali is part of the Indonesian archipelago but has always retained a unique identity. Balinese Hinduism, which has its roots in Indian Hinduism and Buddhism, is the predominant religion and shapes much of the island's life and culture.
