Guidelines for the Last Days of 5781/2020

Hoshana Rabbah Morning Services • MiSheYakir, the earliest time to say a blessing on the Tallit is 6:36am. • Pesukei D’Zimra includes sections from /Yom Tov. After Mizmor L’Todah, turn to Shabbat/Yom Tov Pesukei D’Zimra and recite from Laminatze’ach Mizmor L’Dovid through HaShem Malach Gei’ut Laveish. Shemini Atzeret Friday Night ● An abridged Kabalat Shabbat is recited that begins with Mizmor Shir L’Yom HaShabbat. BaMeh Madlikin should also be omitted. ● Both V’Shamru for Shabbat and Vayedaber for Yom Tov are recited before the Amidah. ● Ma’ariv Amidah for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shabbat and . ● Vayechulu is recited after the Amidah (omitting the blessing “Magen Avot”) followed by Aleinu and L’Dovid. ● In the Diaspora, the Shemini Atzeret meals take place in the (unless you have the custom to do otherwise). One does not recite Leishev BaSukkah on Shemini Atzeret. ● It is preferable to wait until nightfall (7:31pm) to begin Kiddush. ● Kiddush for Yom Tov with proper Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret insertions. Kiddush begins with Yom HaShishi. After the blessing of Mekadesh Yisrael V’HaZemanim, the blessing of Shehechiyanu is recited. ● In the event of rain, one may eat indoors. At that point, this individual should recite Mashiv HaRuach during the Mussaf Amidah. ● Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret. ● Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret. Mincha should be recited before Shekiyah (sunset) which is at 6:52pm. ● Seudah Shlishit should ideally be eaten before the tenth hour (4:57pm) and preferably after reciting Mincha. If one did not do so, one may eat seudah shlishit until sunset. ● Preparations for the second day may not begin until nightfall (7:30pm).

Simchat Torah (Second Day of Shemini Atzeret) Saturday Night ● Candle lighting must be performed after nightfall. ● Ma’ariv should be recited after nightfall. ● Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with insertions for Shemini Atzeret includes Vatodi’einu. ● We do not eat in the Sukkah on . .(יקנה"ז) Kiddush for Yom Tov includes Meorei Ha’Eish, and Shehechiyanu ● ● Birkat HaMazon should include the insertions for Shemini Atzeret. Daytime ● Birchot Keriat Sh’ma for weekday (HaMeir La’Aretz). ● Shacharit Amidah for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shemini Atzeret. ● Full Hallel is recited. ● On Simchat Torah, we complete the Torah by reading V’Zot HaBeracha. We then begin the new cycle with Bereishis 1:1-2:3, the maftir is Bemidbar 29:35-30:1 and the haftarah is Yehoshua 1:1-1:18. ● Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shemini Atzeret. ● Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shemini Atzeret.
