Annual Report 2015 Keeping Families Close “A house is built by hands, but a home is built by heart.”

Our Our MISSION VISION

To provide nurturing Supporting families and supportive environments and to reach the hope of services to directly improve the health tomorrow from the and well being of children challenges of today. and to bring comfort to their families. A Newly Renovated Dear Friends , Guest Room Thank you for your support in 2015. You helped the Ronald McDonald House of serve over 2100 families at the House, over 20,000 families in our 3 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, as well as supported a major renovation of the original wing of the Ronald McDonald House. Together, we are changing lives of seriously ill or injured children and their families. I have had the honor to serve as the President and CEO for 17 years and the courage and strength that is exemplified daily by the children and families we serve is inspiring. Featured this year in the annual report is the story about Lily and her mom, Emily. Lily brought so many smiles to the faces of our dedicated staff and volunteers. All of us work hard to ensure that we are meeting our mission and keeping families close when they need it the most. Families often reside at the Ronald McDonald House for many months at a time. It is important that we provide a warm, comfortable, well maintained and welcoming environment at their “home away from home.” With that in mind our major project in 2015 was the renovation of the 27 original wing guest rooms and bathrooms. The second floor guest rooms and bathrooms were 24 years old and the third floor spaces were 16 years old so they were ready for a major overhaul. Several key partners played an integral role in the success of our project. Thanks to Marriott International, EJH Construction, Moeckel Carbonell Associates, Inc. and Marichu Valencia our dream of newly renovated space became a reality. In September 2015 the original wing was closed. Through a great partnership with the Inn at Wilmington and our Social Worker, Megan, and Guest Services Coordinators, Vanessa and Caroline, families were welcomed and provided with the services they needed at the hotel as well as having the opportunity to participate in the meals and other activities during the day at the House while seeking specialized medical treatment at the area hospitals.

The 70 day renovation project led by our now retired Operations Director, Meg, refurbished the 27 Sweet dreams gifts were provided by original wing guest rooms. The guest rooms received new windows, bathrooms, furniture, televisions and the following renovation donors: furnishings. One of our families commented when they checked into the space days before the Christmas holidays, “Everything looks great! We are so appreciative!” Legends Estate of Nancy duPont Cooch The cost of the project was just under $870,000 dollars. Funding was provided by foundations, individuals, Estate of Ronald F. Schocie corporations and two legacy gifts as well as a portion from our maintenance and reserve funds. Through Welfare Foundation careful stewardship of our resources the project was significantly less than our original estimate of $1.3mm. Luminaries Thank you to the visionaries and all of our donors for making the renovations possible. John Hollis Hank Rosenberg Todd Seelhorst Laura Willis Jennifer Zerby Clough Family Story

Anyone who visited the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware over the past few months had probably met Lilly Clough. Two year-old Lilly filled the House with laughter and joy all day long. Lilly was born in Uganda and taken to a foster program run by her, now, adoptive mother, Emily. After knowing Lilly for only a few days, Emily decided that she wanted to adopt her. In Uganda, adoptive parents must foster their child for three years in the country before they are able to finalize the adoption, and leave Uganda. About a year into this process, Lilly was diagnosed with leukemia and Emily was told that Lilly would need a bone marrow transplant.

This type of medical care is not available in Uganda, so Emily began searching for a hospital that would be able to provide Lilly’s treatment. Due to the circumstances and need for travel, the adoption process was accelerated and finalized so that Emily could take Lilly out of the country to seek treatment. The family was referred to Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. As a previous guest of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Emily found comfort in learning that the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is located across the street from Nemours. Emily’s mom, who still lives in the US, was able to visit and stay at the House with Emily and Lilly, a perfect example of how the House is “keeping families close.” Emily shared that the Ronald McDonald House played a big role in their ability to have access to the state of the art medical treatment at Nemours. They arrived in the United States just before Christmas in 2015. Emily told me, “I don’t know how we would have found a place to stay if it wasn’t for you guys [the Ronald McDonald House].” In 2015 the Ronald McDonald House served 2131 families and our international families represented 1% of that total. Other than the delicious meals, Lilly’s favorite parts of the House were the playroom and, oddly enough, the “intern office” which she liked to visit on a daily basis! Emily was thankful that the House was here, in such close proximity to Nemours where she knew Lilly was getting the best medical attention. Not only did the House provide them with many resources that they do not have access to at home, including the luxuries of electricity, but also with a new support group. While they were staying here, Emily and Lilly formed friendships with all of the House staff, volunteers and many of the other families. One of these families set up a crowd funding site for Lilly! In order to figure out Lilly’s diagnosis she underwent genetic testing which was generously donated by the lab. Although the results will not be back for approximately three months, Lilly is not able to return to Uganda just yet. Emily and Lilly are currently visiting family and friends in South Carolina until the test results come back. The House is a lot quieter since Lilly left, but we are happy that Emily has stayed in touch and recently sent us some “Lilly love” to brighten our day until their planned return to the Ronald McDonald House this summer! Emily is still in touch with many of the families that she met while staying at the House and these families continue to provide her with support as she waits for the test results.
