Infrared band intensities of 1,2-dibromoethane in solutions: Electrostatic effect and influence of bonding on the conformational equilibrium

Abstract

The conformational equilibrium of 1,2-dibromoethaneŽ. DBE in various media Ž vapor phase, liquid, and solutions in n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, carbon disulfide, bromoform, , nitromethane, deuterated acetonitrile and deuterated dimethylsulfoxide. has been studied by IR absorption spectra. The enthalpy differences between transŽ. t and Ž. Ž . Ž . y1 gauche g conformers D Ho were determined from the dependencies of ln ItgrI upon T , where I tand I gare the Ž.ŽŽ. . integrated intensities of the bands, belonging to different conformers. The values RTPln ItgrI and RPln I tgrI qD HorT obtained at 296 K were used as measures of the free enthalpy Ž.DGooand entropy differences of the conformers Ž.DS respectively, when considering their changes with . To minimize the errors due to solvent and temperature effects on the IR-band absorption coefficients, four different band pairs of trans and gauche conformers were investigated. Good ŽŽ.Ž..1r2 correlations between DGoo, D H and the function of dielectric permitivity of the medium 0.5yy1r2q1 were observed for all except toluene. Significant changes of DSo with the media have been found: they cover more than y1 y1 1.5 cal mol K when going from the vapor phase to polar solvents. The DSoovalues correlate with D H ones Ž. Ž.Ž.y3y1 compensation effect ; the slope of the dependence DDSoorDDH s 1.0"0.3 P10 K is close to those determined earlier for 1,2-dichloro- and bromofluoro-ethanes, trans-1,2-dichlorocyclohexane and o-iodophenol. The overall integrated ŽŽ.a y1.ŽŽ.a y1. intensities in the CH2A -stretching rBAstr , 3200±2700, cm and deformational rBdef , 1550±1300, cm regions Ž.a Ž. were measured for neat DBE and its solutions in CCl43 , CD CN and CD 32 SO. The ArBstr value noticeably increases a Ž. when going from CCl4A to proton acceptor solvents, while the rBdef does not depend on the solvent. These results are interpreted within the framework of the formation of weak hydrogen bonds between CH2 -groups of DBE and proton acceptor groups of the solvents. The enthalpies of specific interaction of DBE with CD332 CN andŽ. CD SO were estimated y1 using the `intensity rule'. These values are about 1 kcal mol . Nevertheless, poor correlation between D Hoo, DG and basicity parameters of the solvents indicate the minor effect of the H-bond formation on the conformational equilibrium of DBE.
