SITUATION A string of earthquakes that hit the Niigata prefecture, northern Japan, over the past two days left at least 23 people dead and no less than 2,000 injured. Tens of thousands were evacuated and of J many spent a second night in emergency shelters. Sea apan The first quake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, took place on 23 October. The epicentre was Ojiya city, some 260 km northwest of Tokyo. Sendai Houses were flattened and roads and infrastructure damaged or destroyed. The quake also precipitated landslides. Aftershocks continued until the evening of the 24th. The Government said 59,000 people from 36 Niigata communities were evacuated, but higher figures have been reported Nagaoka by the media. Ojiya Tokamchi ACTION Nagaoka Red Cross Hospital in Niigata treated 312 injured people and Tokyo, Saitama, Toyama, Niigata, Tochigi and Gunma chapters as well as the Japanese Red Cross medical centre at national headquarters deployed Red Cross hospital disaster relief teams. The medical centre also dispatched a domestic emergency response unit (ERU).
