A New Network of Communal Recreational Waterfront Space in Bangkok by Apichart Srirojanapinyo Submitted to the Department of Architecture on May 21, 2009. in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Architecture Studies Abstract Physically and historically, Bangkok has been shaped by its relationship to its waterfront. Flowing 370 kilometers through Thailand, the Chao Phraya River is more than the nation’s lifeline. It was a principal waterway that largely determined the expansion of this former agricultural city. With the advent of industrialization, the focus shifted to the establishment and consolidation of man- made infrastructures such as roads and highways, leaving the waterfronts as large areas of underused land, deteriorated ports, warehouses, and informal settlements.

© Lonely Planet Publications 101 BANGKOK BANGKOK Bangkok In recent years, Bangkok has broken away from its old image as a messy third-world capital to be voted by numerous metro-watchers as a top-tier global city. The sprawl and tropical humidity are still the city’s signature ambassadors, but so are gleaming shopping centres and an infectious energy of commerce and restrained mayhem. The veneer is an ultramodern backdrop of skyscraper canyons containing an untamed universe of diversions and excesses. The city is justly famous for debauchery, boasting at least four major red-light districts, as well as a club scene that has been revived post-coup. Meanwhile the urban populous is as cosmopolitan as any Western capital – guided by fashion, music and text messaging. But beside the 21st-century façade is a traditional village as devout and sacred as any remote corner of the country. This is the seat of Thai Buddhism and the monarchy, with the attendant splendid temples. Even the modern shopping centres adhere to the old folk ways with attached spirit shrines that receive daily devotions. Bangkok will cater to every indulgence, from all-night binges to shopping sprees, but it can also transport you into the old-fashioned world of Siam. Rise with daybreak to watch the monks on their alms route, hop aboard a long-tail boat into the canals that once fused the city, or forage for your meals from the numerous and lauded food stalls. HIGHLIGHTS Joining the adoring crowds at Thailand’s most famous temple, Wat Phra Kaew (p108) Escaping the tour

0 Preface The Royal Thai Government has a policy to promote the Thai ways as a national agenda. This has seen a change in the dimension of presenting Thailand from a Product Approach to be one of Value that tourists will receive by travelling in the country, as well as increase the recognition and image of Thailand as a travel destination of happiness by means of these Thai ways that have outstanding uniqueness unlike anywhere else in the world. This also comprises the dissemination of public relations, creating recognition, and stimulating international tourists to travel to and in Thailand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has an operational plan to promote the health tourism products of Thailand through the Issue Base: Amazing Thailand Health and Wellness to create and promote health and beauty products that emphasise on value addedness. Consideration has been given to the demands of tourists who have displayed interest and pay attention to their well-being. Furthermore, Thailand is another destination for tourists who keep an eye on their health by coming to relax as well as take care of their body and mind. More importantly, the health services and products of Thailand have set standards, uniformity, and use a combination of Western and Eastern science. There is also the utilisation of Thai wisdom and Thai herbs that help in the healing and caring of health, which is especially unique to Thailand. The Facilities Section, Services Promotion Division has decided to create a Thainess tourist service product package and route database for health and well-being, which reflects being Thai in each region of the country for the tourist group who loves Health and Wellness including various services in all dimensions.
