Flowing 370 kilometers through Thailand, the Chao Phraya River is more than the nation’s lifeline. It was a principal waterway that largely determined the expansion of this former agricultural city. With the advent of industrialization, the focus shifted to the establishment and consolidation of man- made infrastructures such as roads and highways, leaving the waterfronts as large areas of underused land, deteriorated ports, warehouses, and informal settlements. With recent developments turning their backs onto the waterfront, the diminishing public exposure and access to the Chao Phraya River means it is quickly losing its historic role as an valuable asset and resource for the capital. This thesis proposes the establishment of a green network along the Chao Phraya River by opening up and developing selected underused areas, and connecting them with the new systematic water transportation. Open to the Public! presents a series of open space networks that offer new public areas to the city by (i) improving the river accessibility to reconnect it with the city, (ii) opening up and creating a new network of public recreational waterfronts that also addresses the existing flooding problem, and (iii) activating the use and access of the hidden Bangkrachao peninsula, a 14.4-million-square-meter jungle located just over two kilometers from the Bangkok Central Business District. As the ports and industrial zone are gradually being moved to new locations, this thesis aims to explore the plausibility of reconnecting this large preservation area back to Bangkok. A New Network of Communal Recreational Waterfront Space in Bangkok Introduction and Statement Bangkok Metropolitan Area (BMA), home to 15 million people,1 is one of many modern cities that discarded the traditional socio-economic systems and developed themselves toward industrialization, resulting in permeating problems of air and water pollution, environmental degradation, as well as habitat destruction. Realizing that environment is a critical issue of the city, in 1999,2 the BMA planned to increase the public green space from 1 sq.m. to 10 sq.m. per capita. Ten years later, there has been only a slight increase to an average of 1.46 sq.m. per capita. Generally, the public space in Bangkok is insufficient comparing to the population, while many are difficult to be accessed. Very few parks are connected to major transportation routes. The Lumpini Park is the most well known and the most used park in Bangkok because it is situated in the densest part of the city and is accessible by the subway. However, a survey conducted by Suan Dusit Institute shows that only 5% of the Bangkok population prefers to spend their free time in parks or public open spaces rather than in shopping malls.3 The low interest may be due to the inaccessibility of these open spaces and the absence of attractive conditions such as natural, entertainment, and cultural facilities. One scheme that Bangkok proposed is to purchase some small private pieces of land in the city and convert them into public parks. However, in a high-density city such as Bangkok, finding and transforming underused spots in the inner city to provide more public spaces can be both problematic and extremely expensive. With the problems of accessibility, size, and parking space, these small spaces scattering around the city do not generate uses, and could not create enough impact to magnetize the users. Faced with this deadlock, authorities and urban planners are beginning to turn their attention back to the city’s riverfront, which has intrinsically shaped Bangkok – both physically and historically – since its establishment more than two hundred years ago. In the initial stages of industrialization, the ports and warehouses were presumably important. The issue is a shift in scale of a location of such facilities to the south leading, now, to both the problem and opportunity of the leftover deteriorated area along the waterfront. With recent developments turning their backs on the waterfront, the diminishing public exposure and access to the Chao Phraya River means it is quickly losing its historic role as an asset and resource for the capital. This main focus of thesis is the proposal to create an open recreational space network along the Chao Phraya River by opening up these underused areas,

SUMMARY Present-day Thailand is in many aspects a legacy of the policies and practices carried out by King Chulalongkorn the Great of Siam (A.D.1868-1910) within the context of western colonialism and modernization. This includes the setting up of a national bureaucracy, a centralized government with territorial integrity and sovereignty, professional armed forces and police, an independent judiciary with a modern legal code, and diplomatic relations with foreign powers. The documents are also the records of social policies such as the successful emancipation of slaves by peaceful and legal means, the abolition of gambling, the establishment of a public school system and the reform of the Buddhist Sangha, as well as the promotion of agricultural production, the market economy, financial and fiscal institutions. These measures contributed to the maintenance of Siam independence, a rare feat in the world at the time. The nominated documents in the Thai language are records of all these accomplishments. They were either hand-written texts on local papers made from the mulberry and khoi trees, or typed on imported papers. They consist of official and private correspondence and memoranda between King Chulalongkorn and his ministers, memoranda between officials, reports of meetings, and drafts of royal decrees and proclamations that took place during his reign. These documents are the basic source of information on the revolutionary measures adopted, the reasons for them, the strategies, process of execution and outcomes.

In conjunction with the oral histories acquired from the local residents, the study incorporates inquiries on historical narratives and documents, together with photographic and illustrative materials obtained from physical surveys of thirty religious structures for data collection. The textual investigations indicate that Mon people migrated to the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya in large number during the 18th century, and established their settlements in and around Pakkret area. Located northwest of the present day Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, Pakkret developed into an important community of the Mon diasporas, possessing a well-organized local administration that contributed to its economic prosperity. Although the Mons was assimilated into the Siamese political structure, they were able to preserve most of their traditions and customs. At the same time, the productions of their cultural artifacts encompassed many Thai elements as well, as evident from Mon Buddhist temples and monasteries in Pakkret. The stylistic analyses of these structures further reveal the following findings. This paper describes the ecological structure of 17 vegetation stands and the usefulness of satellite images to characterize a disturbed tropical urban 18 forest located in the lower floodplain of the Chao Phraya River, Thailand. Nine representative plots 19 were established in Bang Kachao peninsula in 4 tropical urban forest types: rehabilitation forest, 20 home-garden agroforestry, mangrove and park. The correlation between NDVI and LAI obtained 21 from satellite images and plant structure from field surveys were analyzed. The NDVI had the 22 highest relationship with stand factors for the number of families, number of species, Shannon- 23 Weiner’s diversity index and total basal area.

    ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 6 November 2020 Youthquake Evokes the 1932 Revolution and Shakes Thailand’s Establishment Supalak Ganjanakhundee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Grievance and frustration resulting from the government’s authoritarian style, its restrictions on freedom of expression and the dissolution of the Future Forward Party have been accumulating among students and youths in Thailand since the 2014 military coup. • While high school and college students are overwhelmingly represented among participants in the ongoing protests, young people from various other sectors across the country have also joined the demonstrations. • The flash-mob style of demonstration is a venting of anger against the political system, expressed in calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, a new Constitution and, more importantly, reform of the Thai monarchy. • The protests are a flashback to the 1932 Revolution, in that they are conveying the message that ordinary people, not the traditional establishment, own the country and have the legitimate right to determine its future course. • In response, the crown and the royalists are using traditional methods of smears and labels to counteract the youths. * Supalak Ganjanakhundee was Visiting Fellow in the Thailand Studies Programme, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute from 1 October 2019 to 30 June 2020.
