Fiction I Historical History I Native Ameri("an Wind Through the Buffalo Grass: A Lakota Story Cycle is a narrative history of the Pine Ridge Lakota tribe of South Dakota, following its history from 1850 to the present day through actual historical events and through the stories of four fictional Lakota children, each related by descent and separated from one another by two generations. The ecology of the Pine Ridge region, especially its mammalian and avian wildlife, is woven into the stories of the children. 111ustrated by the author, the book includes drawings of Pine Ridge wildlife, regional maps, and Native American pictorial art. Appendices include a listing of important Lakota words, and checklists of mammals and breeding birds of the region. Dr. Paul A. Johnsgard is foundation professor of biological sciences emeritus of the University of Nebraska-lincoln. -

1 Lands of the Lakota: Policy, Culture and Land Use on the Pine Ridge Reservation Joseph Stromberg Senior Honors Thesis Environmental Studies and Anthropology Washington University in St. Louis 2 Abstract Land is invested with tremendous historical and cultural significance for the Oglala Lakota Nation of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Widespread alienation from direct land use among tribal members also makes land a key element in exploring the roots of present-day problems—over two thirds of the reservation’s agricultural income goes to non-Natives, while the majority of households live below the poverty line. In order to understand how current patterns in land use are linked with federal policy and tribal culture, this study draws on three sources: (1) archival research on tribal history, especially in terms of territory loss, political transformation, ethnic division, economic coercion, and land use; (2) an account of contemporary problems on the reservation, with an analysis of current land policy and use pattern; and (3) primary qualitative ethnographic research conducted on the reservation with tribal members. Findings indicate that federal land policies act to effectively block direct land use. Tribal members have responded to policy in ways relative to the expression of cultural values, and the intent of policy has been undermined by a failure to fully understand the cultural context of the reservation. The discussion interprets land use through the themes of policy obstacles, forced incorporation into the world-system, and resistance via cultural sovereignty over land use decisions. Thiwahe Zani Okičhiya Ichaȟwičhayapi Raising Healthy Families Together is an informal network of social service organizations providing services to the residents of the Oglala Lakota Nation on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It was founded in 2015. It has an email base of 40 + members. It meets four times a year to share information between members. A member organization gives a presentation of his/her organization and every participant provides an update of any staff changes and what their organization is doing. There is also a shared calendar for the next three months of events engaging social service agencies. This Pine Ridge Area Social Services Organizations Rotary Directory was originated by Angie Sam, TANF Director. Her intern, Maretta Afraid of Bear, collected the initial data and Robyn Whirlwind Horse assisted with data entry in 2016/17. Dr. Craig Howe, Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS) and Tom Allen, Oglala Lakota College, provided historical and contemporary Tribal information. On behalf of Omniciye Multi- Cultural Rotary Club; Bev Warne, Kibbe Conti, Gloria Eastman and Tom Katus were members of the initial visiting team. Terri Hunter wrote the chapter on Lakota History, Dee Katus edited the data, Tom Katus, provided over all management to the project, and Linda Peterson provided final editing and electronic publishing. -

Title South Dakota Indian Reservations Today—Native Students. Grade Level Adult workshop for Native inmates. Theme Duration 1½ hours. Goal Participants will increase their understanding of the geographical locations and differences among the tribes living on the South Dakota reservations. Objectives Workshop participants will know: 1. The number of reservations in SD. 2. Which tribes live on those reservations. 3. Where the reservations are located. 4. Which two reservations are the largest in population and which reservation is the smallest. 5. Which bands live on which reservations. South Dakota Standards Cultural Concept Participants should recognize the diversity of the SD reservations. Cultural Background The reservations in South Dakota are populated by the seven tribes of the Oceti Sakowin, The Seven Council Fires. Those tribes, who began as one tribe, are now divided into three major language dialect groups: the Dakota, the Nakota, and the Lakota. They are often called the Sioux. According to their oral tradition, they originated as a people at Wind Cave in South Dakota and have always lived in that general area. At the time of European contact, the people lived in Minnesota. The word Dakota means “Considered-friends.” Before they separated, the Dakota lived in the area around Lake Mille Lac in Minnesota, where they would come together for winter camp. Over time they separated into the Oceti Sakowin “Seven Council Fires” as they traveled further away to hunt and no longer camped together in the winter. The tribes came together periodically for ceremonies. The seven sacred ceremonies are the basis of differentiating these tribes from other tribes, which do not have all seven of the ceremonies. -

On one side an equestrian warrior wearing a trailer bonnet and holding a rifle faces another mounted warrior who is holding a tomahawk. The words Nellie Gates 54 yrs. to J. A. Archambault 1907 appear in beadwork. Two mounted warriors holding crooked lances appear on opposite side. BRAY Before Sitting Bull Interpreting Hunkpapa Political History, 1750–1867 During the nineteenth century, the Hunkpapa people were the most warlike of the seven tribal divisions of the Teton Sioux, or Lakotas. Moving aggressively against their enemies, they early won a reputa- tion as resistors of the expansion of American trade and power on the Northern Great Plains. In their leader Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapas produced perhaps the single most iconic leader in the plains wars, a man deeply committed to repelling white intruders, retaining Lakota cultural verities, and resisting the imposition of the reservation system. In 1876, as the Great Sioux War convulsed the region, perhaps one- third of the Teton people gathered in the great summer encampment whose warriors went on to annihilate the Seventh United States Cav- alry command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. While two-thirds of Lakotas had remained near their agencies on the Great Sioux Reservation, fully 70 percent of Hunkpapas answered the call of Sitting Bull at the Little Bighorn.1 A century or more of political history lay between the emergence of the Hunkpapas as an autonomous division and the seating of Sitting Bull as the Lakotas’ war leader in 1867. Probing the often fragmentary evidence of the Lakota past allows a reconstruction of the course of political events, revealing insights into the resistance that so marked Hunkpapa dealings with the United States and providing a glimpse of the last, most articulate and determined, upholder of the Hunkpapa tradition of isolationism.2 1. -
