Cornell’s Naturalist Outreach Presents: Rodents: Nutty Adaptations for Survival By: Ashley Eisenhauer What is a rodent? Rodents are a very diverse, interesting group of animals. They can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. The largest rodent is the Capybara (left picture) from South America, and the smallest—about the size of a quarter—is the pygmy jerboa (right picture), indigenous to Africa. The feature all rodents share are continuously growing, gnawing teeth. This is what causes them to constantly chew on things, because they need to grind their teeth to keep them the proper size and sharpen them. Their other features, such as their vision, hearing, fur, feet, tails, sociality, and survival methods during the winter vary from species to species. Exploring the diversity of rodents is an effective way of demonstrating adaptations in animals. The rodents I will be talking about with students are the eastern gray squirrel, northern flying squirrel, woodchuck/groundhog, eastern chipmunk, and chinchilla. All of these are indigenous to New York, except the chinchilla which is from the Andes Mountains in South America. I will be bringing my pet chinchillas to my presentations to show how certain aspects of chinchillas are different from the rodents that live here in New York because of the climate difference. Some of these differences include larger ears for heat dissipation, thick fur for cold nights, and large herd sociality. Local critters that are often mistaken as rodents are rabbits, which are actually Lagomorphs. This is a common misconception because they also have continuously growing teeth and are constantly chewing on something. -

BRF PUBLIC SCHOOLS HISTORY CURRICULUM RELATED TO AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES GRADES 8-12 COMPONENT The following materials represent ongoing work related to the infusion of American Indian history into the History curriculum of the Black River Falls Public Schools. Our efforts in this area have been ongoing for over 20 years and reflect the spirit of Wisconsin Act 31. SEPTEMBER 2011 UPDATE Paul S Rykken Michael Shepard US History and Politics US History BRFHS BRF Middle School Infusion Applications 1 INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW The Infusion Task Force was established in December of 2009 for the purpose of improving our efforts regarding the infusion of American Indian history and cultural awareness throughout the BRF Public School K-12 Social Studies Curriculum. This action occurred within the context of several other factors, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ho-chunk Nation and the School District and the establishment of a Ho-chunk language offering at BRFHS. Our infusion efforts go back to the early 1990s and were originally spurred by the Wisconsin Legislature’s passage of Act 31 related to the teaching of Native American history and culture within Wisconsin’s public schools. The ecology of the Pine Ridge region, especially its mammalian and avian wildlife, is woven into the stories of the children. 111ustrated by the author, the book includes drawings of Pine Ridge wildlife, regional maps, and Native American pictorial art. Appendices include a listing of important Lakota words, and checklists of mammals and breeding birds of the region. Dr. Paul A. Cox Kelly Sassi Clifford Canku Approved: 10/21/2019 Mark Harvey Date Department Chair ABSTRACT The Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Seven Council Fires; “Great Sioux Nation”) occupied an area from the woodlands to the Great Plains. The landscape and the wind influenced their language and culture in a way that suggests a long occupation. Major landmarks like Ȟesápa (Black Hills), Matȟó Thípila (Bear Lodge; “Devils Tower”), Pahá Makȟáska (White Earth Butte; White Butte, ND), and Oǧúǧa Owápi (Images Burned Into The Stone; Jeffers Petroglyphs, MN) were woven into the cultural identity of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ. The pictographic record, traditional song, and oral tradition recall events like first contact with the horse at the Čhaŋsáŋsaŋ Ožáte (White Birch Fork), or the James River-Missouri River confluence in C.E. 1692. The historical pictographic record, oral tradition, and occupation will be examined in this paper to support the idea that Očhéthi Šakówiŋ have a cultural occupation of the Great Plains that long predates the European record. -

1 Lands of the Lakota: Policy, Culture and Land Use on the Pine Ridge Reservation Joseph Stromberg Senior Honors Thesis Environmental Studies and Anthropology Washington University in St. Louis 2 Abstract Land is invested with tremendous historical and cultural significance for the Oglala Lakota Nation of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Widespread alienation from direct land use among tribal members also makes land a key element in exploring the roots of present-day problems—over two thirds of the reservation’s agricultural income goes to non-Natives, while the majority of households live below the poverty line. In order to understand how current patterns in land use are linked with federal policy and tribal culture, this study draws on three sources: (1) archival research on tribal history, especially in terms of territory loss, political transformation, ethnic division, economic coercion, and land use; (2) an account of contemporary problems on the reservation, with an analysis of current land policy and use pattern; and (3) primary qualitative ethnographic research conducted on the reservation with tribal members. Findings indicate that federal land policies act to effectively block direct land use. Tribal members have responded to policy in ways relative to the expression of cultural values, and the intent of policy has been undermined by a failure to fully understand the cultural context of the reservation. The discussion interprets land use through the themes of policy obstacles, forced incorporation into the world-system, and resistance via cultural sovereignty over land use decisions. COLAHAN*** SUMMARY.—The prey brought by alpine swifts Tachymarptis melba to their chicks in Switzerland, Spain and South Africa included a wide variety of arthropods, principally insects but also spiders. Insects com- prised 10 orders and 79 families, the Homoptera, Diptera and Hymenoptera being the most often con- sumed. The assessment of geographical variation in the diet was complicated by the great variability among the individual supplies of prey. Prey size varied between 1.3 and 29.6 mm, differing significantly in the median prey size of the three populations (5.12 - 8.81 mm) according to the intraspecific variation in size of alpine swifts. In an interspecific comparison, prey size correlated positively with body size in seven species of swifts. RESUMEN.—Las presas aportadas por vencejos reales Tachymarptis melba a sus pollos en Suiza, Es- paña y Sudáfrica incluyeron una amplia variedad de artrópodos, principalmente insectos pero también arañas. Entre los insectos, fueron identificados 10 órdenes y 79 familias, siendo Homoptera, Diptera e Hymenoptera los más consumidos. Las variaciones geográficas en la dieta se vieron ensombrecidas por una gran variabilidad entre los aportes individuales de presas. Residents of Punxsutawney and visitors from across the nation gathered to see Phil make his highly-anticipated weather prognostication, during Pennsylvania’s unique Groundhog Day celebration. “Groundhog Day is a beloved Pennsylvania tradition that has been embraced wholeheartedly by communities across the country,” said Gov. Tom Wolf. “We are honored Phil has called our commonwealth his home for more than 100 years and look forward to continuing to share his prediction with visitors, residents, and the millions watching from their homes.” The event now attracts up to 30,000 visitors to Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter weather 104 times while forecasting an early spring 20 times. The story of the holiday tradition declares that if the groundhog emerges early on the morning of February 2 and sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter weather. Should he not see his shadow, we will have an early spring. The annual event began in 1886, when a spirited group of groundhog hunters dubbed themselves "The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” and proclaimed Punxsutawney Phil to be the one and only weather prognosticating groundhog. -

Wildlife Spotting Along the Thames
WILDLIFE SPOTTING ALONG THE THAMES Wildlife along the Thames is plentiful, making it a great location for birding. Bald Eagles and Osprey are regularly seen nesting and feeding along the river. Many larger birds utilize the Thames for habitat and feeding, including Red Tailed Hawks, Red Shoulder Hawks, Kestrels, King Fishers, Turkey Vultures, Wild Turkeys, Canada Geese, Blue Herons, Mallard Ducks, Black and Wood Ducks. Several species of owl have also been recorded in, such as the Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl and even the Snowy Owl. Large migratory birds such as Cormorants, Tundra Swans, Great Egret, Common Merganser and Common Loon move through the watershed during spring and fall. The Thames watershed also contains one of Canada’s most diverse fish communities. Over 90 fish species have been recorded (more than half of Ontario’s fish species). Sport fishing is popular throughout the watershed, with popular species being: Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, White Perch, Crappie, Sunfish, Northern Pike, Grass Pickerel, Muskellunge, Longnose Gar, Salmon, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Channel Catfish, Barbot and Redhorse Sucker. Many mammals utilize the Thames River and the surrounding environment. White-tailed Deer, Muskrat, Beaver, Rabbit, Weasel, Groundhog, Chipmunk, Possum, Grey Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Little Brown Bats, Raccoon, Coyote, Red Fox and - although very rare - Cougar and Black Bear have been recorded. Reptiles and amphibians in the watershed include Newts and Sinks, Garter Snake, Ribbon Snake, Foxsnake, Rat Snake, Spotted Turtle, Map Turtle, Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle and Spiny Softshell Turtle. Some of the wildlife species found along the Thames are endangered making it vital to respect and not disrupt their sensitive habitat areas. -

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots.
