NKT is looking for an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer. This role is responsible for the design, development, prototyping and manufacture of control electronics containing embedded / firmware for laser systems and associated equipment for the & Defence (A&D) group.

Key responsibilities • Working closely with optical and mechanical on forming new laser system design concepts and taking ownership of the electronics design throughout the lifecycle of our products. • Hardware design, both digital and analogue, from concept through to manufacture and test. • Developing embedded software / firmware for laser control electronics • Development of safety interlock circuits • Requirements capture and documentation for both hardware and software • PCB layout and design • Preparation of electrical BOMs • Prototype assembly, test and preparation of assembly instructions, working with production on transfer-to-production • Design of test equipment and writing of test instructions for production • Work with the purchasing department and directly with suppliers on finding cost effective solutions for parts and subassemblies, sourcing new suppliers if needed. • Take ownership of project work packages and work with project managers to ensure delivery of solutions within tight deadlines • Suggest and carry out design improvements on the basis of improved performance, reliability reduced cost or ease of manufacture

Required skills and experience • Qualified to degree level in Electronic Engineering or similar subject • Ideally 5+ years of design experience with a proven track record • Strong knowledge of electronics design (Digital and Analogue) • Programming knowledge in C, VHDL or similar to support digital circuit design. • Experience of ARM M4 and Atmel Xmega ranges of preferred • CAD /Layout software: Altium or similar • FPGA development experience desirable • Experience with communication protocols such Ethernet, USB and CAN Bus • Understanding of EMC issues, EMC test experience is desirable • Strong IT skills • Documentation skills – MS Office, Design databases • Ability to work on own initiative in a small multi-disciplinary team • Ability to communicate and present ideas to other engineers and across the business. • Understanding of cost reduction strategies • Strong organisational skills to be able to work on multiple concurrent projects

Travel Requirements • Visits to local suppliers and occasional travel to NKT Photonics offices in Europe • Up to 10% away from UK per annum
