BY NICK ETHIER SPORTS STAFF WRITER NORTHBRIDGE — Runs were at a premium when the Northbridge High varsity softball team hosted Tantasqua Regional last Thursday, May 4, but the Rams produced enough runs via small ball to win a competitive 3-0 game. “It was a well-played game by two good teams,” said Northbridge head coach Dave Mills, whose team improved to 11-1 with the victory. “I think both of the pitchers are now in a pretty good grove.” The pitchers were the Rams’ Shannon Mortimer and the Warriors’ Abby LaFountain, who both threw complete game three-hitters. Mortimer had 13 strikeouts, while LaFountain sat 10 Northbridge players down. BY NICK ETHIER SPORTS STAFF WRITER SPENCER — The combination of good pitching and mistake-free defense is usually the recipe for victories in a high school varsity baseball game, and Uxbridge High has used that formula to now rattle off four straight wins after beating David Prouty Regional, 9-2, on Tuesday, May 2. “It’s been great,” said Peter Rice, head coach of the now 6-3 Spartans. “It’s hon- estly been pitching and defense. We’ll come up with some timely hits and we’ve taken advantage of some people’s mistakes, but [over the past four games] their ERA has been 1.75.” Holden Thiebault tossed a complete game to earn the victory for Uxbridge, and his line included two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter in less than 80 pitches. He retired nine in a row in a span from the second inning to the fifth. “Pitching was very good, he hit his spots,” Rice said of Thiebault’s perfor- mance. “When he had to bear down, he did.” And the Spartans’ defense played errorless ball behind him, which included throwing a runner out at the plate in the first inning and a double play turned in the sixth. BY NICK ETHIER SPORTS STAFF WRITER UPTON — Seven runs through the first two innings of play — four in the first, three more in the second — were enough to lift the Blackstone Valley Tech varsity baseball team past Bay Path Regional, even after the Minutemen mounted a five-run rally later in the game. When all was said and done the Beavers emerged victorious, 10-5, on Wednesday, May 3. “We were attacking fastballs and get- ting in good hitter’s counts. We have a tendency to get too deep in counts and we end up chasing bad balls. When we’re attacking we’re in good shape, and we did that in the first couple of innings,” said Valley Tech first-year head coach John Burke. In the bottom of the first inning Ty Almeida, Blake Morin (2 for 3), Tom Morin (3 for 3, walk) and Andrew Lavergne strung together four consec- utive one-out hits, with Tom Morin’s plating a run and Lavergne’s scoring two more. Then, with two outs, Nate Mathew S.
