VILLAINS and SUPERHEROES January 9, 2015 • Steve Gray
SIMONE BIANCHI: VILLAINS AND SUPERHEROES January 9, 2015 • Steve Gray Lovers of villains, superheroes and all things comic related are in for a real treat this month as the Danese/Corey Gallery in New York present an exhibition of works on paper by the master of comic book art, Simone Bianchi. Entitled Villains and Superheroes: Works on Paper, the exhibition promises to be a dream come true for aficionados of the work of Simone Bianchi and his highly individual style of working revealed in his expert use of rendering drawings in ink washes or watercolour halftones. On view at Villains and Superheroes: Works on Paper will be a number of preparatory sketches along with finished works featuring images of characters that Simone Bianchi has become closely associated with such as Wolverine, Batman, Dr Doom, Storm and Medusa. 511 WEST 22 ST NEW YORK NY 10011 . 212.223.2227 . DANESECOREY.COM Works on Paper Browsing the images of works on paper by Simone Bianchi, one can’t help but admire the impressive techniques that have been used to create these Villains and Superheroes. Perhaps the art of comic book drawing is seen as some kind of lower form of art compared to fine art and in days of computer enhanced graphic drawings that sometimes appear to lose their very soul, Bianchi demonstrates a passion and love of drawing that can transcend those narrow minded boarders. These works on paper exist as pure drawings, superbly rendered with the aforementioned ink and watercolour washes along with pencil and acrylic paints to create images that can be appreciated as standalone works of art. -

ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies
Running head: ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies: Establishing Good Practices for Patient-Provider Communication at Arkham Asylum © Randy Sabourin, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Key Words: Mental health, popular culture, narrative inquiry, interviews, patient-provider communication ARKHAM ASYLUM 2 Abstract Arkham Asylum is the home of some of popular culture's most notorious super villains. The neglect and inadequate care these villains receive mirrors a real world context in which mental illness is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and poor rehabilitation rates. Patients like the Joker present complex mental health narratives. These extreme characters would likely be high profile subjects for real-world researchers. This study explores the niches between the usual action-packed escapades on the surface of Batman stories. By pulling back the curtain over the routine treatment of Arkham Asylum’s patients (also known as inmates), the researcher presents a set of good practices for improving their care through more effective communication. A rich data set of recorded audio interviews from the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum serves as the foundation for this set of good practices tailored to the needs of the fictional facility. Narrative inquiry is used to pull these recommendations from the data. Current real world mental health policies and good practices for patient-provider communication, grounded in existing literature, provide the framework within which the researcher compares the fictional world. Based on the narrative elements found in the data, this study recommends an empathy- driven and preventative approach to treating Gotham’s criminally insane population. In 1992, I was dawdling my way through a Ph.D. program in English at the University of Illinois. I had trouble focusing on my work that year, because back in my hometown of Buffalo, New York, my mother was dying of cancer. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985, while I was still living at home but poised to start graduate school at Illinois in the fall. When my parents told me about the cancer, I said that I wouldn’t go to graduate school, that I would stay and care for my mom, but they said “No.” They were insistent that I begin my adult life and career, and they also realized that my offer to remain in Buffalo was based as much on my fear of an unknown direction for my life as it was in some sort of noble self-sacrifice. -

Justice League: Origins
JUSTICE LEAGUE: ORIGINS Written by Chad Handley [email protected] EXT. PARK - DAY An idyllic American park from our Rockwellian past. A pick- up truck pulls up onto a nearby gravel lot. INT. PICK-UP TRUCK - DAY MARTHA KENT (30s) stalls the engine. Her young son, CLARK, (7) apprehensively peeks out at the park from just under the window. MARTHA KENT Go on, Clark. Scoot. CLARK Can’t I go with you? MARTHA KENT No, you may not. A woman is entitled to shop on her own once in a blue moon. And it’s high time you made friends your own age. Clark watches a group of bigger, rowdier boys play baseball on a diamond in the park. CLARK They won’t like me. MARTHA KENT How will you know unless you try? Go on. I’ll be back before you know it. EXT. PARK - BASEBALL DIAMOND - MOMENTS LATER Clark watches the other kids play from afar - too scared to approach. He is about to give up when a fly ball plops on the ground at his feet. He stares at it, unsure of what to do. BIG KID 1 (yelling) Yo, kid. Little help? Clark picks up the ball. Unsure he can throw the distance, he hesitates. Rolls the ball over instead. It stops halfway to Big Kid 1, who rolls his eyes, runs over and picks it up. 2. BIG KID 1 (CONT’D) Nice throw. The other kids laugh at him. Humiliated, Clark puts his hands in his pockets and walks away. Big Kid 2 advances on Big Kid 1; takes the ball away from him. -

Please feel free to share this file. Most boys dream of being a man, a warrior who has faced his enemy in battle and been the victor. To stand victorious on the field of battle, blood dripping from his weapon which is raised above his head as he screams a cry of triumph. I was such a boy and I became a man when I took up my rifle and walked towards a fortified bunker system in Vietnam, knowing I would kill or be killed. It is not popular in today’s society to exalt the warrior but every male knows there is no higher achievement in the male world than to be a warrior who risks his life in combat. -

Roger Quilter
ROGER QUILTER 1877-1953 HIS LIFE, TIMES AND MUSIC by VALERIE GAIL LANGFIELD A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Music School of Humanities The University of Birmingham February 2004 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT Roger Quilter is best known for his elegant and refined songs, which are rooted in late Victorian parlour-song, and are staples of the English artsong repertoire. This thesis has two aims: to explore his output beyond the canon of about twenty-five songs which overshadows the rest of his work; and to counter an often disparaging view of his music, arising from his refusal to work in large-scale forms, the polished assurance of his work, and his education other than in an English musical establishment. These aims are achieved by presenting biographical material, which places him in his social and musical context as a wealthy, upper-class, Edwardian gentleman composer, followed by an examination of his music. Various aspects of his solo and partsong œuvre are considered; his incidental music for the play Where the Rainbow Ends and its contribution to the play’s West End success are examined fully; a chapter on his light opera sheds light on his collaborative working practices, and traces the development of the several versions of the work; and his piano, instrumental and orchestral works are discussed within their function as light music.
