With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media. -

1 Torts: Cases and Context Volume One Eric E. Johnson Associate Professor of Law University of North Dakota School of Law eLangdell Press 2015 About the Author Eric E. Johnson is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of North Dakota. He has taught torts, intellectual property, sales, entertainment law, media law, sports law, employment law, and writing courses. He has twice been selected by students as the keynote speaker for UND Law’s graduation banquet. His writing on legal pedagogy has appeared in the Journal of Legal Education. With scholarly interests in science and risk, and in intellectual property, Eric’s publications include the Boston University Law Review, the University of Illinois Law Review, and New Scientist magazine. His work was selected for the Yale/Stanford/Harvard Junior Faculty Forum in 2013. Eric’s practice experience includes a wide array of business torts, intellectual property, and contract matters. As a litigation associate at Irell & Manella in Los Angeles, his clients included Paramount, MTV, CBS, Touchstone, and the bankruptcy estate of eToys.com. As in-house counsel at Fox Cable Networks, he drafted and negotiated deals for the Fox Sports cable networks. Eric received his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2000, where he was an instructor of the first-year course in legal reasoning and argument. He received his B.A. with Highest and Special Honors from the Plan II program at the University of Texas at Austin. Outside of his legal career, Eric performed as a stand-up comic and was a top-40 radio disc jockey. -

April 11, 2019 3:30 PM-5:00 PM Johnson Center 324 3:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Accidentally Pioneering a Movement: How the Pioneer Players Sparked Political Reform Sami Hansen Faculty Advisor: James Al-Shamma, Ph.D. Theatre in the twenty-first century has been largely based on political and social reform, mirroring such movements as Black Lives Matter and Me Too. New topics and ideas are brought to life on various stages across the globe, as many artists challenge cultural and constitutional structures in their society. But how did protest theatre get started? As relates specifically to the feminist movement, political theatre on the topic of women’s rights can be traced back to an acting society called the Pioneer Players, which was made up of British men and women suffragettes in the early twentieth century. The passion and drive of its members contributed to its success: over the course of a decade, patrons and actors worked together to expose a rapidly changing society to a variety of genres and new ideas. In this presentation, I hope to prove that, in challenging traditional theatre, the Pioneer Players helped to pave the way for the avant garde, spur political reform, and promote uncensored theatre in Great Britain. January 18, 2013 By BRIAN STELTER EARLY in the new Netflix series “House of Cards” the narrator and card player Representative Francis Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, looks straight into the camera and tells viewers: “Power is a lot like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location. The closer you are to the source, the higher your property value.” Underwood is speaking at a presidential inauguration, just outside the Capitol in Washington. As viewers observe the swearing-in he asks in a delicious Southern drawl, “Centuries from now, when people watch this footage, who will they see smiling just at the edge of the frame?” Then Underwood comes into frame again. He’s just a few rows away from the president. He gives the camera a casual wave. Underwood, having been spurned in his bid to become secretary of state, is on a quest for power that’s just as suspenseful as anything on television. But his story will unspool not on TV but on Netflix, the streaming video service that is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in original programming. Its plan for showing “House of Cards,” an adaptation of a 1990 BBC mini-series set in Parliament, will itself be a departure from the usual broadcast approach. On Feb. 1 all 13 episodes will be available at once, an acknowledgment that many of its subscribers like to watch shows in marathon sessions. Another 13 episodes are already in production. -

EYES AND NARRATIVE PERSPECTIVES ON STORY A Practice Led Exploration of the Use of Eyes and Eye Lines in Fiction Film Professor Erik Knudsen Abstract Eyes and eye lines are one of the key ways in which the perspective on a story is established in figurative narrative fiction cinema. As such, the eyes and the use of eyes by a performer needs as much creative and technical attention as shot composition, sound, production design and editing. Rather than thinking of the eyes of a performer as a subservient aspect of a projected performance, often driven by the dominance of dialogue- action delivery, this paper seeks to examine how, in fictional cinematic expression, eyes can be deployed to enhance an introspective and transcendent narrative perspective on a story. This exploration takes place through practice. In particular, during the creation of my latest feature film, The Raven On The Jetty (Erik Knudsen, UK 2014), in which I sought to explore how to enhance the relationship between eyes, eye lines and narrative perspective on story. In reflecting on these issues, I shall look at what is meant by narrative perspective and relate this not only to the performativity of a fiction film, but also to the relationship of this performativity to emotions and feelings. I shall then look at eyes: first looking at their behavioural importance, then at looking and seeing. I hope to show that we can think of eyes not merely as a part of an actor’s performance, but also as a window through which we can see a world whose presence is untouchable. -

A gigantic gargoyle crowning the island, born of the cliffs themselves, as old as the sea and sky. Crumbling statues flank its windowless walls. Dying vines creep up its sides. For thousands of years, the people of Bluehaven worshipped it, praised it, journeyed through it to the Otherworlds, but it has stood like this – dormant, lifeless, closed to all – for well over a decade now. Fourteen years to be precise. Ever since me and Dad came to town. Jane Doe is all but alone in a world that hates her. Outcast from the day she and her father tumbled down the sacred steps of the Manor into Bluehaven, bringing earthquakes and destruction to the town, fourteen-year-old Jane is surrounded by people who hold her responsible for their misfortune. She and her father live in a basement owned by the Hollows, a local couple who take every opportunity to remind Jane that she is a curse upon the land. Jane’s only allies are Violet, the Hollows’ precocious and rebellious eight-year-old daughter; and her father, John Doe, who has been trapped, mute and unmoving, inside his own skin for as long as Jane can remember. She can feel an invisible thread connecting them, but her dad is unable to offer her any answers or comfort. The Hollows think she’s a freak, and resent her presence in their lives. -

Running head: ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies: Establishing Good Practices for Patient-Provider Communication at Arkham Asylum © Randy Sabourin, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Key Words: Mental health, popular culture, narrative inquiry, interviews, patient-provider communication ARKHAM ASYLUM 2 Abstract Arkham Asylum is the home of some of popular culture's most notorious super villains. The neglect and inadequate care these villains receive mirrors a real world context in which mental illness is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and poor rehabilitation rates. Patients like the Joker present complex mental health narratives. These extreme characters would likely be high profile subjects for real-world researchers. This study explores the niches between the usual action-packed escapades on the surface of Batman stories. By pulling back the curtain over the routine treatment of Arkham Asylum’s patients (also known as inmates), the researcher presents a set of good practices for improving their care through more effective communication. A rich data set of recorded audio interviews from the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum serves as the foundation for this set of good practices tailored to the needs of the fictional facility. Narrative inquiry is used to pull these recommendations from the data. Current real world mental health policies and good practices for patient-provider communication, grounded in existing literature, provide the framework within which the researcher compares the fictional world. Based on the narrative elements found in the data, this study recommends an empathy- driven and preventative approach to treating Gotham’s criminally insane population.
