Arkham Asylum first appeared in Batman Arkham Asylum Oct. Arkham Asylum serves as a psychiatric hospital for the City area, housing patients who are criminally Batman Arkham Asylum. Arkham's high-profile patients are often members of Batman's rogues gallery. Located in Gotham CityArkham Batman Arkham Asylum is where Batman's foes who are considered to be mentally ill are brought as patients other foes are incarcerated at Blackgate Penitentiary. Although it has had numerous administrators, some comic books have featured Jeremiah Arkham. Inspired by the works of H. Lovecraftand in particular his fictional city of Arkham, Massachusetts[2] [3] the asylum was introduced by Dennis O'Neil and Irv Novick and first appeared in Batman October ; much of its back-story was created by Len Wein during the s. Arkham Asylum has a poor security record and high recidivism rate, at least with regard to the high-profile cases—patients, such as Batman Arkham Asylum , are frequently shown escaping at will—and those who are considered to no longer be mentally unwell and discharged tend to re-offend. Furthermore, several staff members, including its founder, Dr. Amadeus Arkhamand his nephew, director Dr. Jeremiah Arkhamas well as staff members Dr. Harleen QuinzelLyle Bolton and, in some incarnations, Dr. Jonathan Crane and Professor Hugo Strangehave become mentally unwell. In addition, prisoners with unusual medical conditions that prevent them from staying in a regular prison are housed in Arkham. For example, Mr. Freeze is not always depicted as mentally ill, but he requires a strongly refrigerated environment to stay alive; Arkham, with special conditions required for certain patients or inmates being a regularity rather than an exception, is seen by authorities to be an ideal location under certain circumstances. Gotham criminals deemed "criminally insane" or "mentally unfit" by the court of law generally are treated at Williams Medical Center before being deemed dangerous enough to be sent to Arkham Asylum. Serving as a psychiatric hospital, Arkham Asylum has a long and brutal history, beginning when its own architect became mentally unwell and hacked his workers to death with an axe. He was convicted and sentenced Batman Arkham Asylum spend the rest of his life in the same asylum he had been building. The original name of the asylum was "Arkham Hospital". Its dark history began in the early s when Arkham's mother, having suffered from mental illness most of her life, committed suicide. However, it was later revealed that her son had actually euthanized her and repressed the memory. Amadeus then decided, as the sole heir to the Arkham estate, to remodel his family home in order to properly treat the mentally ill, so others might not suffer the same Batman Arkham Asylum as his mother. Prior to the period of the hospital's remodeling, Amadeus Arkham treated patients at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Metropoliswhere he, his wife Constance and his daughter Harriet had been living for quite some time. Upon his telling his family of his plans, they moved back to his family home to oversee the remodeling. While there, Amadeus Arkham received a call from the police notifying him that Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkinsa serial killerreferred to Amadeus Arkham by Metropolis Penitentiary while at State Psychiatric Hospital, had Batman Arkham Asylum from prison and sought his considered opinion on the murderer's state of mind. Shortly afterward, Amadeus Arkham returned to his home to find his front door Batman Arkham Asylum open. Inside, he discovered the raped and mutilated corpses of his wife and daughter in an upstairs room, with Mad Dog's alias carved on Harriet's body. With his sanity in tatters, Dr. Arkham designed a floor plan that evoked occult runes, he believed that the pattern Batman Arkham Asylum drive away the mysterious bat that haunted his dreams. After treating Mad Dog Batman Arkham Asylum six months, Amadeus Arkham strapped him to an electroshock couch, then Batman Arkham Asylum and purposefully electrocuted him. The staff treated the death as an accident, but it contributed to Amadeus Arkham's gradual descent into mental illness, which he began to believe was his birthright. Eventually, Amadeus Arkham was a patient in his own asylum after he tried to kill his stockbroker inwhere he died scratching the words of a binding spell into the walls and floor of his cell Batman Arkham Asylum his fingernails and belting out " The Star-Spangled Banner " in a loud voice. Also inthe move to have the asylum closer to Gotham had begun; that was completed inwhen Batman by Len Batman Arkham Asylum described the asylum's location "deep in the suburbs of Gotham City". It is perhaps for this reason that Batman is listed in some histories as the of Arkham Asylum. Arkham Asylum has been demolished or destroyed several times in its history, Batman Arkham Asylum during the events of Batman: The Last Arkham see below. It is also seriously damaged at the beginning of the Knightfall storyline, when Bane uses stolen munitions to blow up the facility and release all the patients. After these events, the asylum is relocated to a large mansion known as "Mercey Mansion". In this instance, a timer was used to open the doors two minutes before the city is sealed. This is orchestrated by the administrator himself, Dr. Jeremiah Batman Arkham Asylumthe nephew of Amadeus Arkham, who had the choice of discharging the patients or watching them all starve or kill each other. In the middle of the story, it is revealed during the Prodigal storyline that Batman has established a hidden base within the sub-basement of the asylum known as the "Northwest Batcave " [6] but it was blown up by during the Battle for the Cowl story arc. In the Battle for the Cowl one-shot, Dr. Jeremiah Arkham wanders among the remains of the asylum as he muses on Batman Arkham Asylum life. He reveals that he has discovered Batman Arkham Asylum created by his uncle, Dr. Amadeus Arkham, for a new Arkham Asylum. He also contemplates the fates Batman Arkham Asylum his own nonviolent "special" patients: an artist with almost Batman Arkham Asylum facial features who must paint facial expressions onto his almost blank face to express himself; a man obsessed with his own reflection Batman Arkham Asylum a series of mirrors Batman Arkham Asylum his room; and a woman supposedly so ugly, one glance at her face would cause anyone to become mentally ill. Upon discovering his "special" patients unharmed from the destruction thanks to their secluded cellsArkham resolves to rebuild the facility according to his ancestor's vision, but to serve as a literal asylum for mentally ill patients in order to shelter them from the outside world. However, when told to be happy with the new development, the artist secretly paints his face Batman Arkham Asylum with a hideous grin, reminiscent of the Joker ; it is implied that the "special" patients, as well as Arkham himself, have given in to mental illness. Arkham is revealed to be the new Black Mask and is a patient in his own asylum. It was also revealed during Arkham Reborn, that as both Dr. It was also revealed that the "special" patients were figments of Arkham's imagination. During Batman EternalArkham Asylum is destroyed as part of the villains' assault on Batman, with also being declared bankrupt after Wayne Enterprises loses most of its assets following detonating some of Batman's hidden weapons caches around the city. As a result, Wayne Manor is repossessed by the city and turned into the new Arkham Asylum, [9] but Bruce decides to accept the situation on the grounds that he can now Batman Arkham Asylum a closer eye on his foes in the asylum due to his intimate knowledge of the manor's entrances and exits after sealing off the entrance to the Batcave from the manor. Originally, Arkham Asylum was used only to house genuinely mentally ill patients having no connection to Batman, but over the course of the s, a trend was established in having the majority of Batman's adversaries end up at Arkham. Arkham Asylum is also featured in other DC Comics publications, apart from the Batman comic Batman Arkham Asylum titles. It was published by DC in It made reference to the treatment of several of the patients, such as the attempt to wean Two-Face away from dependence on his coin for decision making, first with a die and then a deck of cards. It once again portrays the asylum as having been taken over by its patients. A Serious House on Serious Earth has been critically acclaimed, having been called "one of the finest superhero books to ever grace a bookshelf. In it, the old Arkham Asylum is destroyed, to be replaced by a new and more modern facility. The story introduces Jeremiah Arkham, the asylum's director Batman Arkham Asylum nephew of Amadeus Arkham. In an attempt to discover how criminals, specifically Zsasz, keep escaping, Batman has himself committed to the asylum. Jeremiah uses various methods, such as unleashing many patients on Batman at once, in an attempt to gain psychological insight on the . This story makes a few passing references to the events of A Serious House on Serious Earthsuch as Amadeus Arkham taping over the mirror, and his journal is shown early in the story. Jeremiah also mentions his relative's descent into mental illness. An episode of Batman: The Animated Series titled "Dreams in Darkness", also about Batman in Arkham, portrays a similar theme, with the Scarecrow as the chief villain, also replacing Jeremiah Arkham with a more nondescript administrator, Dr. The series was edited by Valerie D'Orazio. Eric Powell created the painted cover art which Batman Arkham Asylum on both the original series and graphic novel compilation. White, facing charges of massive fraudpleads insanity to avoid being sent to prison, knowing he can bribe a Gotham jury. The judge sees through White's attempt to avoid prison and has White admitted to Arkham, which White himself had never even heard of up until that point. He soon realizes the horrors of the place and tries to survive. Ultimately, he is locked in Mr. Freeze's cell and loses his nose and his lips to frostbite while trapped in there, coming to resemble his nickname. He was originally referred to as 'Fish' as new inmates commonly are, but is re-dubbed Batman Arkham Asylum Great White Shark' by himself. In Batmanit is revealed that Dr. Jeremiah Arkham is the new Black Mask. More is revealed about Dr. Jeremiah Arkham in Detective Comics and The comic reveals some of the asylum's dark history. Amadeus Arkham originally founded the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane in the memory of his mother, whom he euthanized as treatment for her dementia. That historic facility was built on the grounds of Amadeus Arkham's historic mansion on the outskirts of Gotham City on the secluded Arkham Island. Amadeus personally treated its first inmate, Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkins, who had killed his wife and daughter. After being claimed sane enough to walk free, Martin was due to be released, until he took a fountain pen from Amadeus' desk and murdered his secretary. At some point, Martin went to the Botanical Gardens on the island and desecrated the statue that was raised by Amadeus in memory of his family. Those many tragedies pushed Amadeus over the edge, and, during a session of electroshock Batman Arkham Asylum, he murdered Batman Arkham Asylum. Amadeus was later ruled insane and was incarcerated in his own asylum, where he later died. Amadeus' gravestone was located outside next to the Botanical Gardens. Over the years, the asylum gradually developed Batman Arkham Asylum new facilities Batman Arkham Asylum as the Penitentiary being established. However, it was eventually closed down soon before the Batman Arkham Asylum Origins Incident - possibly because more criminals were instead sent to Blackgate Prison which later proved to be unfit for housing the criminally insane. Once reopened, the facility Batman Arkham Asylum voted as the number one psychiatric and rehabilitation facility in the state. However, the infamous reputation remained as more high profile criminals frequently managed to escape its walls. That developed to become a premium bed psychiatric facility holding a range of individuals who were criminally insane. For the past two years prior to the Arkham Asylum Incident, the Batman Arkham Asylum offered internships to University Students to help them gain valuable experience for a career. Arkham Asylum's Batman Arkham Asylum website, Batman Arkham Asylumwas the online public face of the facility that was designed to inform potential patients and family members about the institution. The institution gradually developed, but was eventually abandoned, possibly because more of Gotham's criminals were being sent to Blackgate Prison instead Batman Arkham Asylum Arkham Asylum. Arkham Asylum could be seen in the distance from Gotham's mainland, but during that incident, the asylum was not operational, so the criminally insane individuals were mostly treated within other institutions, such as Blackgate Prison. However, Quincy Sharp did speak about his intentions to renovate and reopen the asylum in the following months as it would function as a highly appropriate facility to house and treat severe mental illnesses. While Batman took down Mr. Freeze and Ferris BoyleArkham Asylum was being developed by Sharp into the psychiatric institution that it was formerly. At around the same time Batman Arkham Asylum this incident, Arkham Asylum had been fully renovated and was in a fit condition to house the criminally insane, thanks to the efforts of Sharp who became the new Warden. Facilities Batman Arkham Asylum as the Intensive Treatment Center and the Medical Facility were drastically developed so the asylum could function as a hospital, while the improved Penitentiary ensured that the growing number of 'super criminals' remained safely incarcerated. Very soon, after the Arkham Origins Blackgate Incident, patients such as the Joker were transferred to Arkham Asylum, so that they could receive the Batman Arkham Asylum level of treatment for psychological illnesses. Additionally, staff such as Dr. Young and Aaron Cash were employed there. Over Batman Arkham Asylum years, Arkham Asylum further improved to become a leading institution for psychiatric research with new facilities such as laboratories being added, and with new cells such as Extreme Isolation being added to house a wider variety of the criminally insane patients. The was incarcerated by Batman in the facility, after he attempted to Batman Arkham Asylum him about a dirty bomb the Joker stole. Because of Batman Arkham Asylum, the by that point composed of veterans DeadshotHarley Quinnand as well as newcomers Black SpiderKing Sharkand Killer Frost were dispatched by to infiltrate the asylum to find classified data the Riddler had allegedly stolen from their mainframes. Although they ultimately managed to infiltrate the asylum with help from the , they ran into a few snags due to an unexpected encounter with the Joker, as well as a gas explosion causing a yellow alert, the latter of which forced them to swap security footage videos in a failed attempt at delaying Batman's interference. They ultimately went against their mission after they learned not only that the real mission was to assassinate the Riddler, but also the reason why due to his having knowledge on how to diffuse the nanite bombs due to Riddler having formerly been a Suicide Squad member himselfwhich they promptly used to disable their own bombs, although at the cost of Batman Arkham Asylum lives of both due to Batman swapping places with him and due to his tough skin making the electro-shock method useless. Joker, who escaped due to exploiting a weakened part Batman Arkham Asylum the security defenses via 's earlier attempt at revenge towards him, also proceeded upon recovering the dirty bomb via Harley's mallet, engineer a jailbreak of the various inmates as insurance that Batman cannot stop his plan in time. Harley ultimately defected back to the Joker, while Killer Frost was thrown while inside of a police car into a mountain by Bane, Captain Boomerang was left at the Asylum, while was the only one to actually escape besides Joker and Harley Quinn. The psychiatric institution remained fully operation during that time with a number of insane individuals as well as insane super criminals who were incarcerated there away from the Gotham City Batman Arkham Asylum. Following a number of the patients' breakout attempts over the years, Warden Sharp had the asylum's security and facilities make a great improvement, and ensured that the inmates did not escape - something that was quickly noticed by the Joker. For example, new electrical barriers, suicide collars, weapon detectors, and CCTV's were introduced to ensure that the patients' behavior could be more easily controlled. Despite that, a mysterious fire at Batman Arkham Asylum Prison resulted in all of the Blackgate Prisoners being transferred to Arkham Asylum, which put a great strain on the facilities. That proved to be problematic as the staff could not closely monitor so many prisoners, which resulted in Harley Quinn being able to escape and sneak to the Security Control Room. During that incident, the asylum was gradually desecrated by the patients, and 's Plants were mutated by Titan which damaged a large section of the asylum. Using the Arkham Asylum Incident in his favor, Sharp became Mayor Batman Arkham Asylum Gotham City and proposed the creation of Arkham City : a sectioned off quadrant of Gotham City that was devoted to the incarceration of Arkham Batman Arkham Asylum and convicts alike. A number of prominent companies bid for the land, but it ultimately went to the previously unknown security company TYGER. Within weeks of the sale, TYGER was also awarded the contract to police Arkham City and instantly began using Arkham Island to launch its fleet of helicopter gunships to police the new prison facility. After Arkham City shut down, so did the Asylum, which was abandoned altogether. Around the time of the Joker's death, Joker posthumously revealed that the walls of Arkham City were rigged to blow, and he hinted that the answer to defusing them would be at the Intensive Treatment Center cell that he was once incarcerated in after an incident on the Batman Arkham Asylum of July. That section of Arkham Asylum ended up being destroyed by a bomb rigged inside the cell, which nearly resulted in Batman's death, though he escaped. The Arkham Knight also went Batman Arkham Asylum there, deduced that the cell was rigged, and did not want Batman be killed before he had his shot at him, although after he found the Joker's "Die-ary", he mentioned that the night wasn't a total loss. Once again, the asylum could be seen from the Gotham City mainland, and was in the exact same condition Batman Arkham Asylum the Arkham Asylum Incident. Scarecrow kidnapped and Commissioner Gordon, took them to the asylum, and forced Batman to turn himself in to save them. Scarecrow took Batman to Arkham Asylum where he had him rolled in Batman Arkham Asylum a prisoner gurney, much like the way that Batman and the guards brought Batman Arkham Asylum the Joker in Arkham Asylum two years earlier. Scarecrow had Batman transported in a truck to the Arkham Mansion, which was still overrun with Ivy's plants. It was here that Scarecrow revealed Batman's secret identity as Bruce Wayne to the world. However, who had a change of heart after an earlier fight with Batmantracked Scarecrow's truck, arrived in time to stop him from killing a restrained Batman and rescued his mentor, Batman Arkham Asylum managed to inject Scarecrow with his own Fear Toxinand effectively ended the Master of Fear's Batman Arkham Asylum of terror over Gotham City. After the Arkham Knight Incident, the institution was very likely to have been renovated once again to house the criminally insane with a new warden and more staff. The number of patients would be managed in order to avoid another large scale breakout attempt. This wiki. This wiki All wikis. Sign In Don't have an account? Batman Arkham Asylum a Wiki.
