WHEN it comes to super teams today, the usual talk is about the Avengers, Justice League, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy or even the Suicide Squad, mainly due to their cinematic presence, and not comic book origins. For nostalgia's sake, pioneer teams like the Justice Society of America (JSA), the first super team in mainstream comics, and the Fantastic Four (Marvel's First Family and Silver Age protagonist) would also be part of the conversa tion. The need to evolve with times is crucial in a world where many super teams have bitten the dust or drifted into limbo and are in dire need of a (cinematic) resurrection, I grew up reading super team theme titles -1 felt they were **value for money" since they fea Characters who have benefited tured more than one character/vil- lain in every issue. from the Squadron's recruitment Mind you that the opportunity approach include Hawkman, for heroes to meet were very limit Starman, Liberty Belle, the Shining ed in the Silver and Bronze Ages Knight and more. This year marks the 40th anni versary of the Squadron and recent mentions in DC TV-flicks such as Stargirl and the Arrowverse's Crisis On Infinite Earths event offers a glimmer of hope of a possible revival. This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57). SIMONE BIANCHI: VILLAINS AND SUPERHEROES January 9, 2015 • Steve Gray Lovers of villains, superheroes and all things comic related are in for a real treat this month as the Danese/Corey Gallery in New York present an exhibition of works on paper by the master of comic book art, Simone Bianchi. Entitled Villains and Superheroes: Works on Paper, the exhibition promises to be a dream come true for aficionados of the work of Simone Bianchi and his highly individual style of working revealed in his expert use of rendering drawings in ink washes or watercolour halftones. On view at Villains and Superheroes: Works on Paper will be a number of preparatory sketches along with finished works featuring images of characters that Simone Bianchi has become closely associated with such as Wolverine, Batman, Dr Doom, Storm and Medusa. 511 WEST 22 ST NEW YORK NY 10011 . 212.223.2227 . DANESECOREY.COM Works on Paper Browsing the images of works on paper by Simone Bianchi, one can’t help but admire the impressive techniques that have been used to create these Villains and Superheroes. Perhaps the art of comic book drawing is seen as some kind of lower form of art compared to fine art and in days of computer enhanced graphic drawings that sometimes appear to lose their very soul, Bianchi demonstrates a passion and love of drawing that can transcend those narrow minded boarders. These works on paper exist as pure drawings, superbly rendered with the aforementioned ink and watercolour washes along with pencil and acrylic paints to create images that can be appreciated as standalone works of art.
