BELLE OF THE CONCOURS

or the past 25 years, the Keels & Wheels event has brought some of the most unique and truly one-of-a-kind classic cars to the Lakewood Yacht Club. While automobile lovers may marvel at the car’s aesthetics and horsepower, it’s Ftruly the lore and stories behind these cars that make a lasting impression. Margaret Dunning’s 1930 Packard 740 Roadster is no exception, truly earning her the nickname, “Belle of the Concours.”

Packard’s slogan was “Ask the man who owns one.” In the case of this 1930 Packard 740 Roadster, one would have to ask the woman who owned one. Margaret purchased her 740 roadster in 1949 and for the next 66 years drove her Packard regularly and performed all of the routine maintenance. She was a spry 101 years of age when she first participated in the Keels & Wheels Concours D’Elegance event. Her story truly captivated those that saw her and spoke with her, prompting the New York Times to publish a feature story about her and her car in the Sunday’s paper. This article skyrocketed her popularity on the car show circuit and subsequently was invited Margaret was also known for her philanthropy - making to every major Concours shows across the country. The substantial donations to the library and historical society in following year, Jay Leno presented her with the Classic Plymouth, Michigan, and was a great friend of the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Award at the Pebble Beach Car Club of America Museum.
