The persistent and tough-girl image makes the movie "Million Dollar Baby" win the 77th Academy Award for Best Picture. The warm story between Maggie and Frankie is different from the general sports film, but interprets a new type of teacher-student relationship. As the director of the film said, "This is not a real boxing story, but a story about love. An old man, devastated by the loss of his father-daughter relationship, finds a young girl who makes him feel like a father again". Maggie's appearance broke the perfect female image in the traditional American film and overturned the weak appearance of women. The confidence and persistence revealed between Maggie's words and deeds won the unanimous praise of the audience, thus making an excellent sports film. 1.     102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns.     Ofcom – Future of Public Service Media: Open University Response Summary 1. Education is a crucial part of the Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) requirements. Several of the statutory requirements set out in Section 264 of the Communications Act 2003 relate to educational objectives. There are opportunities to strengthen these requirements as part of the new Public Service Media (PSM) offer. 2. The Open University (OU) plays a key role in supporting the delivery of PSB requirements around education through its partnership with the BBC. The partnership co-produces high-quality factual content across several channels and platforms, which is developed in collaboration with academic experts and closely linked to related educational materials hosted by the OU. A key objective of the partnership is to encourage people to embark on learning journeys from the informal, factual content produced with the BBC, through online and printed educational resources which enhance and enrich their broadcast/digital experience, to taking up formal learning opportunites inspired by watching, listening to and engaging with the content produced as part of the partnership. 3. In 2019/20: • A total of 257 hours of content produced via the OU/BBC partnership was broadcast by the BBC. • This resulted in a combined total of 308 million viewing/listening “events” and digital engagement interactions. • The three most popular television programmes broadcast – A Perfect Planet, Springwatch and Hospital (Series 5) all saw viewing figures in excess of 22 million. • There were 765,000 unique visitors to the online educational content related to the OU/BBC partnership hosted on the OU’s free online learning platform, OpenLearn.
