Serie orientale, the journal of the Department of Asian and North African Studies of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, was started back in 1970 and is to date one of the oldest journals of its kind in Italy. Its mission is to foster original and interdisciplinary research in the fields of Asian and North African Studies and its manifold linguistic areas, from Arabic to Japanese. Each annual issue features articles and reviews written by leading schol- ars whose contributions span across a vast array of topics. These can be gathered under four main headings: 1. Linguistics, philology and litera- ture; 2. Religions and philosophies; 3. Archaeology and cultural heritage, visual and performing arts; 4. History, economy, politics and international relations. As always, each proposed article is evaluated by qualified scholars of international renown through double-blind peer review. By utilizing a web-based secure IT platform, the referee tools employed in the process correspond to the ones current amongst the most authoritative scientific journals. After three years of forced interruption (2011-13) due to the fusion of the two Departments of Euro-Asiatic Studies and Eastern Asia into our present Department, the journal has evolved into electronic format, being digitally edited by Edizioni Ca’ Foscari. Moreover, from 2014 Annali di Ca’ Foscari. Serie orientale has become an Open Access resource. But in order to look forward towards a bright future it is mandatory to cultivate the memory of the past and to appreciate what was achieved by the prior generations of scholars who contributed to the journal. In this spirit, several years ago the project of digitalization of the entire 1970- 2010 collection, comprising a total of more than 40 volumes and 600 articles, was patiently undertaken. In 2015, thanks to the painstaking work of librarian Dr. Maria Loretta Manzato and her staff of the Linguistic Library of Ca’ Foscari University, the digitalization process was finally brought to completion. An index of all articles, divided by subject areas with titles, keywords and link to their full text, is now available at the following digital archive: http://lear.unive.it/jspui/handle/11707/1302. All texts can be easily searched for, retrieved and downloaded and we warmly invite scholars and students alike to visit our archive of Annali di Ca’ Foscari. The exegetical corpus and above all the moral literature, represented here chiefly by the learned Sunnite Ibn Abī al-Dunyā of Baghdad (d. 281/894)’s Kitāb al-ṣamt wa ādāb al-lisān, equate silence with verbal discipline and award it the status of an Islamic value, to the extent that

    Orhan Kolog˘lu RENEGADES AND THE CASE · ULUÇ/KILIÇ ALI In the history of the Mediterranean region, the Renegade of the Christians who becomes a Mühtedi by joining the Muslim religion, has played an important role. In European languages the Renegade is the person who abandons Christianity for a different faith. The Mühtedi, on the other hand, according to Muslim and Turkish communities, is the person of another faith who embraces Islam. Since Islam began to spread 600 years after Christianity, it gathered its early followers among pagans, a few Jews but especially Christians. Its rapid spread over Syria, Egypt, North Africa, Sicily, Spain and into central France indicates that all Mediterranean communities were largely affected by the religion. Christianity, which had become the domineering and ruling faith through Papacy and the Byzantine Empire, was now lar- gely disturbed by this competitor. For this reason, it was only natural that both sides scrutinized the Renegade/Mühtedi very closely. The concern of one side in losing a believer matched the concern of the other side in preventing the loss of the Mühtedi, who is then called a Mürted (apostate, the verb is irtidad). European research on this subject outweighs the research done by Muslims, because renegades had not only been, quantitative-wise, many times more than mürteds, but also they played more important roles as history-makers in the Mediterranean. Muslim indifference to their past is easily understandable because the interest was focused only on their activities as Muslims. However, European research bears the mark of the Christian perspective and has a reactionary approach.

    Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural bound- aries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. Ÿ1 The Ottomans came into contact and allied themselves with Christians on two levels. Firstly, Christian allies of the Ot- tomans were individuals; the Ottomans employed a number of Christians in their service, mostly, but not always, after they had converted.

Cardoso, pp.35–121 http:/nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc/sp19 2 http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24906 Kodrah Kristang: The initiative to revitalize the Kristang language in Singapore Kevin Martens Wong National University of Singapore Abstract Kristang is the critically endangered heritage language of the Portuguese-Eurasian community in Singapore and the wider Malayan region, and is spoken by an estimated less than 100 fluent speakers in Singapore. In Singapore, especially, up to 2015, there was almost no known documentation of Kristang, and a declining awareness of its existence, even among the Portuguese-Eurasian community. However, efforts to revitalize Kristang in Singapore under the auspices of the community-based non-profit, multiracial and intergenerational Kodrah Kristang (‘Awaken, Kristang’) initiative since March 2016 appear to have successfully reinvigorated community and public interest in the language; more than 400 individuals, including heritage speakers, children and many people outside the Portuguese-Eurasian community, have joined ongoing free Kodrah Kristang classes, while another 1,400 participated in the inaugural Kristang Language Festival in May 2017, including Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and the Portuguese Ambassador to Singapore. Unique features of the initiative include the initiative and its associated Portuguese-Eurasian community being situated in the highly urbanized setting of Singapore, a relatively low reliance on financial support, visible, if cautious positive interest from the Singapore state, a multiracial orientation and set of aims that embrace and move beyond the language’s original community of mainly Portuguese-Eurasian speakers, and, by design, a multiracial youth-led core team.

The focal point of the MALAYSIA analysis is a gala dinner organized by the Malacca Portuguese Eurasian Association in 2002. This constituted a rare moment in which community members made a public political statement. I argue that a detailed reading of the event as a public performance of “Portugueseness” sheds light upon broader politics of cultural identity in Malaysia today. Finally, I suggest that the “Portugueseness” of today is more flexible and multifaceted than in the past and that new transnational and diasporic Margaret Sarkissian sensibilities
