Introduction
Introduction Imagine you’re invited to a party. You arrive at the venue, slip past security, and Margaret Atwood is there; so are Michael Ondaatje, Anne Carson, and Dionne Brand. CanLit’s luminaries surround you, and having never brushed elbows with so many prominent writers, you turn paparazzi and start taking photographs in earnest. Point and click—easy to tell who monopolizes the spotlight and who falls back. It’s only once you focus manually, looking for an unconventional angle, that you begin to notice others: a younger, more anonymous crowd pushing at the margins, trying to bypass the guest list. So you raise your camera to include them too, at least those close enough to see clearly. Some of the shots will turn out perfectly—balanced composition, candid expressions that capture the palpable energy of the event. Some won’t. The blur of time will seep in, poor exposure rendering the photographs unusable. You might think I’m describing a Griffin Poetry Prize gala. I am, of course, but this is also the plight of prospective anthologists. Working without the benefit of hindsight, anthologists are responsible for scouting talent in little magazines, hard-to-find books, and critical periodicals. th INDIAN POETRY – 20 Century Stuart Blackburn, Ph.D. Part I : Early 20th Century Part II : Late 20th Century Early 20th Century Poetry Overview Poetry, the oldest, most entrenched and most respected genre in Indian literary tradition, had survived the challenges of the nineteenth century almost intact. Colonialism and Christianity did not substantially alter the writing of poetry, but the modernism of the early twentieth century did. We could say that Indian poetry in most languages reached modernity through two stages: first romanticism and then nationalism. Urdu, however, was something of an exception to this generalisation, in as much as its modernity was implicated in a romantic nostalgia for the past. Urdu Mohammad Iqbal Mohammad Iqbal (1877?-1938) was the last major Persian poet of South Asia and the most important Urdu poet of the twentieth century. A philosopher and politician, as well, he is considered the spiritual founder of Pakistan. His finely worked poems combine a glorification of the past, Sufi mysticism and passionate anti-imperialism. As an advocate of pan-Islam, at first he wrote in Persian (two important poems being ‗Shikwah,‘ 1909, and ‗Jawab-e-Shikwah,‘ 1912), but then switched to Urdu, with Bangri-Dara in 1924. In much of his later work, there is a tension between the mystical and the political, the two impulses that drove Urdu poetry in this period. Progressives The political came to dominate in the next phase of Urdu poetry, from the 1930s, when several poets formed what is called the ‗progressive movement.‘ Loosely connected, they nevertheless shared a tendency to favour social engagement over formal aesthetics. -

Incorporamos unha extensa bibliografía, webs de interese, filmografía e relación de vídeos na rede e en televisión sobre estas variedades lingüísticas. Indian English - a National Model
Indian English - A National Model Daniel Costa Woospeak Learning Center, Greece Abstract India is currently home to one of the world’s largest English-speaking communities, in a context where the language is increasingly seen as a gateway to the world. Given the plurality of the country’s social and linguistic landscape, however, a significant amount of the population does not speak or have access to the language. The impact of colonization has traditionally made Standard British English the model to be followed in the educational context, although it does not reflect the local culture. This paper advocates the use of Indian English as the national model, due to a set of unique lexical, grammatical, phonological and discourse features that would allow it to act as both a lingua franca within the country and on the international stage. Keywords: India, Indian English, lingua franca Introduction The English language has increasingly played a significant role in India since the early days of colonization and it currently acts as “its lingua franca and ‘window on the world’” (Mehrotra, 2003, p. 19). In spite of an overreliance on Standard British English as a plausible model, the emergence of a local variety, commonly referred to as Indian English, reflects the impact of its socio-cultural background and setting. It is characterised by the incorporation of distinct lexical, grammatical, phonological and discourse features. This paper argues that such elements, which Indian English has acquired through “indigenization” (Kachru, 1990), has endowed the language variety with a unique nature and the consequent ability to be used as a national model, rather than a set of deviations from a native target model, as it has often been described (Domange, 2015). -
French Creole
Comparative perspectives on the origins, development and structure of Amazonian (Karipúna) French Creole Jo-Anne S. Ferreira UWI, St. Augustine/SIL International Mervyn C. Alleyne UWI, Mona/UPR, Río Piedras Together known as Kheuól, Karipúna French Creole (KFC) and Galibi-Marwono French Creole (GMFC) are two varieties of Amazonian French Creole (AFC) spoken in the Uaçá area of northern Amapá in Brazil. Th ey are socio-historically and linguistically connected with and considered to be varieties of Guianese French Creole (GFC). Th is paper focuses on the external history of the Brazilian varieties, and compares a selection of linguistic forms across AFC with those of GFC and Antillean varieties, including nasalised vowels, the personal pronouns and the verbal markers. St. Lucian was chosen as representative of the Antillean French creoles of the South-Eastern Caribbean, including Martinique and Trinidad, whose populations have had a history of contact with those of northern Brazil since the sixteenth century. Data have been collected from both fi eld research and archival research into secondary sources. Introduction Th is study focuses on a group of languages/dialects which are spoken in Brazil, French Guiana and the Lesser Antilles, and to a lesser extent on others spoken in other parts of the Americas (as well as in the Indian Ocean). ISSN: 1886-5542 TRANSFERRING U.S. LATINO POETS INTO THE SPANISH- SPEAKING WORLD1 Lisa Rose Bradford, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata Translation is slippery art that compounds the problems of the inherent instability of language with the unruly process of duplicating it in another system. The sliding that occurs in the translation of multicultural poetry is even more pronounced since the distance from “the norm” becomes greater and greater. This is true firstly because poetry is a genre that strives for verbal concision and innovation in a playful defiance of norms that pique the reader’s imagination; and secondly because the multilingual poet often involves a second language —either in its original form or as a translation into the language of composition—to enhance sound and cultural imagery. Latino poetry generally glides along on the linguistic and cultural tension inherent in both its poeticity and its English/Spanish and Latino/Anglo dualities that challenge normative discourse. Therefore, the translation of this verse must also produce for the reader a similarly slippery tension, a task that Fabián Iriarte and I constantly grappled with in the editing of a recent bilingual anthology, Usos de la imaginación: poesía de l@s latin@s en EE.UU. This book began as an experiment in heterolingual translation in general, and after selecting eleven Latino poets for an anthology —Rafael Campo, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Silvia Curbelo, Martín Espada, Diana García, Richard García, Maurice Kilwein Guevara, Juan Felipe Herrera, Pat Mora, Gary Soto and Gloria Vando—we spent two years researching and rehearsing versions in readings and seminars offered in the universities of Mar del Plata and Córdoba in order to test the success of our translation strategies.2 There were many aspects to be considered before deciding on the best approach to translating this verse.
