Awards Presentations at the Annual Meeting

2016-17 Volunteer of the Year Mark Fishkind For several years, we have been honoring a volunteer of the year. Selecting such an honoree can be quite difficult since nearly everything done around here involves volunteers. Today the honor is really, in my mind, more of a lifetime achievement award than just for this past year. I am not going to run through all that Mark Fishkind has done over the years because we must get this meeting to closure. Suffice it to say, that there are very few events, activities, programs that don’t have his fingerprints all over them. There is no task too big or too small. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for Temple.

Temple Shalom Social Action Initiative Award Nina Minney The recipient of this award should be a role model to all of us who want to make a difference. Nina Minney is passionate about our environment and saving the planet. She came to Rabbi Paley, Debra Levy-Fritts and me and asked what we were doing in the [ ] and when realizing it wasn’t much, she took it upon herself to pull together a small group, which at first was simply referred to as the Green Team, but now is called Shomrei Adamah. I won’t run through all they have done, but I will praise last weekend’s Earth Fair.

Tracy Fisher Memorial Scholarship Lauren Stock Brotherhood President Bill Hoffpauer awarded Lauren Stock with the Tracy Fisher Memorial Next Dor Valedictorian Scholarship. Named for Tracy Fisher, the daughter of Temple Shalom members Laurel and Mark Fisher, who died in 2009, this award honors her memory and her love of Judaism and all things NFTY. "We are so very proud of Lauren for receiving this award. She is an amazing role model and certainly embodies the passion and spirit that Tracy had," exclaimed Tracy’s Mom, Laurel Fisher.

Onward and Upward

June 1st marks the first day of my second year as President of the Board of Trustees. As I reflect upon the first twelve months, there is no question we had an amazing year filled with good works, spiritual growth, and plenty of laughter. I know if I asked each of you to give me your top three moments I would get very few lists that look alike. The three top moments that come to mind for me are the congregational trip to Israel, the Brotherhood Shalom Award honoring the Reverend Dr. Neil Cazares-Thomas, and the Shabbat service with the Dallas Street Choir. In fact, do feel free to send me your three – I would love to know what really touched your hearts this past year. The year was not without challenge, however. We mourned together the loss of some of our most beloved congregants. National events such as the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando or the shooting of police officers here in our own city simultaneously broke our hearts and enraged us. But, we had our clergy and each other for comfort and strength. We also had the challenge of our own demographics. Our membership has been declining and this has created some financial pressure. Relieving the pressure was the focus of my first year and culminated in the affirmative vote we received at the Congregational Meeting in May to proceed with a potential land sale to greatly enhance our endowment fund. There is work still to be done in this area, but I am confident we have taken a great stride forward in bettering our financial future. Now that reflection is over, it is time to look forward. The endowment growth is greatly beneficial, but it isn’t sufficient to get us to the position we desire. The focus for this fiscal year is two-fold. First, we need to bring new members to Temple Shalom. Second, we need more of our current congregants to get engaged and involved. If we make strides in these two areas I promise you, along with the increased endowment, we will be in a position of strength. I haven’t said anything that every other President before me hasn’t preached - of course we need to add congregants. The hard part is going to be developing and executing a strategy to do so. In the 2013 Pew study, it was found that membership in Reform Judaism is contracting; whereas, the ranks of the unaffiliated and Orthodox Judaism is growing. I have no reason to believe over the last three and half years this position has changed. The URJ has spent considerable time considering the matter and, though they haven’t discovered a silver bullet, the message I have heard is that we need to meet people where they are. We cannot simply expect that what we love is going to be enough to convince others to be part of the family. Our challenge is going to require us to think creatively. It is going to require us to look at the “competition”. What are other congregations, Jewish and other, doing that works? Observing our Orthodox brothers and sisters, it is apparent that personal engagement is key. Size can be a strength, but it can also become an impediment. We need to be less institutional and create more person-to-person connections. We do some great things in this space and there are others already planned for implementation, but my challenge to all of us is to keep our thinking big and bold. We need to be doing more in the community, in our homes, in smaller groups, and in non-traditional ways. Finally, as we work hard to bring in others, we need to make sure we don’t neglect those already in the tent. The job of strengthening the congregation does not belong to the President or Board or the clergy or the professional staff alone. It is going to take each one of us sharing ideas, selling Temple to the broader community, and creating special experiences and moments for each other. Together, I know we will have a great year ahead.

A Note from Cantor Devorah Avery

The Big Question – Why continue involvement in the Jewish community after becoming B’nei Mitzvah?

Recently, I was asked through email why I felt it was important that students continue coming to religious school after becoming B’nei Mitzvah. Instead of responding with the first obvious thoughts that went through my mind, I wanted to really think about my answer. Why is it important? Does participation in religious school really make that much of a difference in a person’s life? Why continue to be involved through High School? What do kids really gain from being involved in the Jewish community? Before I answer these questions, I will share my own story. Growing up in Oklahoma, the only real way to feel our Jewish identity was by belonging to and being active in the Jewish community. My family didn’t live in an area where the next Reform congregation was a mere ten minutes away. My temple is one of three in Tulsa, OK; the other two synagogues are Conservative and Ultra-Orthodox. In the entire state, there are four Reform congregations affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism. Four. At Temple Israel of Tulsa, I was in a class of 14 students. Eleven of us continued on through Confirmation. That summer, following Confirmation, our entire class participated in the NFTY in Israel program. Most of us continued on in the High School program through graduation. I’m sure my situation was unique, but in addition to being involved in the High School program at the temple, working as a Teacher’s Assistant for Sunday School, singing in the choir, and participating in BBYO and NFTY, while my High School friends were out going to parties and occasionally getting into trouble on Friday nights, I was at services with my family. I’ll admit there were many times I wished I was out with my friends. Looking back as an adult, however, I feel proud of my commitments. The question above caused me to ponder again what I’ve pondered many times before. Who would I be if I hadn’t literally grown up in the Jewish community; if the smell of the Temple in Tulsa wasn’t almost as comforting to me as the smell of my parents’ house? Obviously, I have no clue who I would be. What I can say is the following: Being a part of the Jewish community has taught me things that I may not have learned elsewhere. My answer to the parent who posed the question to me was as follows: There is a lot these kids can get from being involved in the temple that they may not get elsewhere - a deeper connection to their Jewish identity, a better understanding of what it means to be Jewish, a close relationship to the Jewish community, Jewish friends, and teachings of ethics and morals from a spiritual perspective. All of the above are important but, for me, it is the last reason that is the most important. A particularly moving experience from a few years ago helped clarify this for me. I walked in on a High School class being taught by a colleague. They were working on an activity about families who make minimum wage and live on food stamps. The students had to plan out a budget to live on for the month. They had to balance the needs for the whole family and the mere pennies they had to work with. Needless to say, they did not have an easy time figuring this out. I found this lesson deeply moving. In an instant, I understood what I learned from being a part of the Jewish community my whole life. Judaism isn’t just about worship and holidays and prayers. Reform Judaism focuses on Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. It focuses on loving our neighbors as ourselves. Judaism teaches us compassion towards others and to look inward at ourselves and continue the endless quest to be better people. Other than at home, where else are our kids going to go to focus primarily on these kinds of things? For me, it’s obvious why students should stay on past becoming b’nei mitzvah and participate in Next Dor. But there are other ways they can participate, too. They can get involved in the Teen Choir, they can join the new BBYO chapter at Temple Shalom, they can participate in NFTY events, they can come to services, they can work as Ozrim in the religious school on Sundays. The list goes on and on. Help your kids find something that’s meaningful to them to take part in. When becoming b’nei mitzvah, children learn about Judaism, Jewish ritual, and the Jewish community. After becoming b’nei mitzvah, students focus on their personal Jewish identity and how they can shape it. For any of you who aren’t sure whether or not you or your kids should continue to be a part of Temple Shalom, contact me or the rabbis or someone else here and have a conversation with us first. We want what is best for you and your families and we want to help you figure out what that is. In Peace and Song, Cantor Devorah Avery [email protected]

Temple Shalom Spotlight Congregant of the Month

As part of getting to know our congregation, each month we feature a different Temple Shalom family.

The Minney Family

Please introduce your family. Alan, Nina, Veronica (14) and Portia (12).

When did you join Temple Shalom? We joined Temple Shalom in 2013, very soon after our move to Dallas from Oakland, CA.

Tell us about yourself. Alan and Nina both grew up in Seattle and attended University of Washington. After college, we moved to San Francisco, which is where both girls were born. When the girls were very young, we moved across the Bay to Oakland, where we were members at Oakland Temple Sinai. Our girls attended the temple preschool, and we made many lifelong friends in that community. After almost ten years in Oakland, Alan was offered a job in Dallas that was too good to pass up. All too familiar with crazy housing markets, we scurried to find our next home and put an offer on a house via email based on some photos our realtor sent us. After a whirlwind trip to Dallas (Nina’s first time here!), we sealed the deal in record time. It was a group effort among our new friends in the local Jewish community, including the neighbors who shared the listing, our realtor, and the sellers! We’ve now been here almost four years and feel very much at home, though we do miss our friends in California and try to visit whenever we can.

What has been your greatest joy during your time at Temple Shalom? Hearing Veronica read the Torah at her bat mitzvah was something we will never forget. Knowing that she was becoming a link in the chain of so many who have come before her and will follow was incredibly special and moving. We also loved scribing our Torah letter and are very grateful we had the chance to participate in that activity.

You are involved with many Temple programs. What is your favorite and what should others know about this program? Right now our passion at Temple Shalom is Shomrei Adamah (“Guardians of the Earth”), which is a green team started this past year by Nina and a few other temple members. It’s been really exciting kicking off new programs like recycling at Food Truck Palooza and our first Earth Fair to celebrate Earth Month. We have lots of other ideas about how to make Temple Shalom greener, and are in the midst of embarking on a temple energy audit to find more ways to reduce our eco-footprint and lower expenses. Members continue to make great suggestions, which we hope to follow through on as our committee grows.

What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? Since the girls were very young, we have tried to observe Shabbat together as a family on Friday nights. It’s usually pretty low key, and lately busy schedules have made it a challenge, but we try to make it happen whenever we can. One of our favorite Shabbat rituals is going around the table and saying our favorite thing that happened during the week. It’s great to end the week on a high note!

Thank you for being our Spotlight Congregant!

A Summer of ReJEWvenation 2.0 Everything slows down when summer finally rolls in. The halls of religious school are quiet, the days are longer (and hotter) and we finally have a moment to reflect and relax. It is a time of renewal, a time of peace, a time to rejuvenate before the school year begins again. Now, just because we take a break from religious school during the summer months, doesn’t mean we need to take a break from Judaism. Last summer, I offered a list of 5 things you can do with your family to do what I call “reJEWvenate”, an opportunity to rejuvenate your Judaism and refresh your Jewish identity without the added stresses and time constraints of the school year. This year, I will add some new ideas and suggestions for you and your family to try! 1) Tap into your creative side and create Jewish ritual items with Pinterest inspiration! Simply type in the name of a ritual item into the Pinterest search engine and find a project that is appealing to you and your children. Some of my favorites include the Lego mezuzah, mason jar Shabbat candle sticks and an Altoids Box Chanukah menorah! 2) Practice decoding Hebrew letters and vowels as you and your kiddos crack a summer message in English written with Hebrew letters! Email my assistant, Karen Thompson at [email protected]. 3) Explore Jewish home rituals with your family and choose one to try during the summer months. This could be lighting Shabbat candles on Friday night, kissing the mezuzah when entering the home, taking a Shabbat walk on Saturday afternoons, or saying the shema before bedtime. Trying out a new ritual is a great way to reJEWvenate and possibly find a renewed connection to God and Judaism. 4) Practice your Hebrew by labeling parts of your house with their corresponding Hebrew words (ie. kitchen table = shulchan, bed = meeta, door = delet, etc.). Just seeing the Hebrew letters and vocabulary around the house will automatically increase comprehension and familiarity. Email my assistant, Karen Thompson at [email protected] for a document with these pre-made Hebrew labels ready to be cut out and taped around the house! Do some tikkun olam, fixing of the world as you and your family engage in community service and other volunteer projects around town. Contact Jewish Family Service for a complete list of volunteer projects that are family friendly! I want to wish you all a wonderful summer and please be in touch if you need any help or guidance is “reJEWvenating” your summer months! LIFT Update: To help or learn more about upcoming training dates, email [email protected].

It's been a wonderful first year of discovery for teachers and students in our LIFT @ Shalom program. This would not have been possible without the support of our Temple Shalom staff, board and clergy who are so caring - as well as our membership! As you can see, teachers and students enjoy each other's company, and learning together each day! We will continue working with students as schedules permit over the summer. There will be a teacher training for new class teachers, so keep an eye on the weekly e-news and our Facebook page. If you are interested in helping with LIFT, please email [email protected]. We would love to train new teachers and substitutes for the future!

Ending the Year Strong With Reading Partners On May 18th and 19th, several Temple Shalom volunteers became Reading Partner tutors to young elementary school scholars at J.W. Ray Learning Center in DISD, working with the North Texas Reading Partners program. Reading Partners is a reading intervention program designed to teach young children key aspects of reading with direct one-to-one tutoring. These students may be English Language Learners, or they may be struggling readers who need more targeted instruction and monitoring. Volunteers were given a short orientation to the program, and then taught lessons to three students to complete lessons this school year. If you are interested in learning more about Reading Partners, go to their website. The next school year is already on its way! Thank you to North Texas Reading Partners http:// readingpartners.org/location/north-texas/ for the opportunity, and to our amazing Temple Shalom volunteers!
