Camp Takodah Songbook Camp Takodah Songbook “Music for free, may it always be sung…” Takodians have been singing since our earliest days. Whether clearing dishes after a meal, inspiring the crowd at a campfire, harmonizing at a Girls Camp chapel service, or settling with Taps at the end of the day, music punctuates most of what we do. This book has some of our most treasured songs (though there always seem to be new ones) dating back to our earliest days or as recent the summer of our 100th anniversary in 2016. The list and lyrics were compiled through the efforts of many Takodians including: Chris Briggs, Claire Gogolen, Mary Morrison, Ryan Reed and Bill Therrien. Please enJoy, share with your families and remember what it was like to be in the dining hall with 300 other people all singing and laughing.     10.2478/nor-2013-0053 Nordicom Review 34 (2013) 2, pp. 47-63 The Mashups of YouTube Thomas Mosebo Simonsen Abstract This article focuses on YouTube mashups and how we can understand them as a specific subgenre on YouTube. The Mashups are analysed as audiovisual recontextualizations that are given new meaning, e.g., via collaborative social communities or for individual pro- motional purposes. This is elaborated on throughout a discussion on Mashups as a mode of everyday bricolages, which are moreover discussed through a theoretical approach to Mashups as exponents of what has been called “Vernacular Creativity”. The article also argues that the novelty of Mashups is not be found in its formal characteristic, but rather in its social and communicative abilities within the YouTube community. This leads to the article’s overall argument that the main characteristic of the YouTube Mashup can be explained in terms of connectivity. It is argued that Mashups reveal a double articulation of connectivity; one that involves the social mechanisms of the Mashups, and another mode, which concerns the explicit embedding of structural connectivity that accentuates the medium-specific infrastructure of YouTube. This double articulation of connectivity is furthermore elaborated on by including Grusin and Bolter’s concept of remediation. Methodologically, the article draws on empirical observations and examples of Mashups are included to demonstrate the article’s main arguments. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J.     DAVIDO Nearing the close of 2019, it’s hard for many to say they haven’t heard the name Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke. The year marks another fete of huge achievements, from opening the year with a sold out date at London’s O2 Arena – making him the first solo African artist to do this – to creating mass hysteria across America with his 2018 single “Fall” which has gone on to have the longest run of an Afrobeats single on the Billboard charts, and saw it peak across Shazam as one of the most searched songs in the United States, and now gears up to release his second album A Good Time, all before a circuit of Christmas shows across Africa. If anything has framed where Davido currently is, it would his “childhood.” The youngest of five, growing up with his parents in Lagos, Nigeria, he was “exposed” to the world. Across summer breaks he would travel to visit his siblings in London and Atlanta, the latter being home to some of the artists that he today he can call his good friends – YoungThug, Gunna, Lil Baby – and the home to some of his favorite rappers growing up – Ludacris, Nelly – the sounds of noughties Hip Hop that he “loved.” It was most likely these trips that would drive a love for music that reflected global ambition. This exposure to the world, would in turn give Davido the opportunity to share with his University of Alabama friends music from Nigeria, that he knew if “given a chance” would go global.
