Camp Takodah Songbook

“Music for free, may it always be sung…”

Takodians have been since our earliest days. Whether clearing dishes after a meal, inspiring the crowd at a campfire, harmonizing at a Girls Camp chapel service, or settling with Taps at the end of the day, music punctuates most of what we do.

This book has some of our most treasured (though there always seem to be new ones) dating back to our earliest days or as recent the summer of our 100th anniversary in 2016. The list and lyrics were compiled through the efforts of many Takodians including: Chris Briggs, Claire Gogolen, Mary Morrison, Ryan Reed and Bill Therrien.

Please enjoy, share with your families and remember what it was like to be in the dining hall with 300 other people all singing and laughing. We hope this helps to bring a little bit of that Camp spirit into your everyday life.

“Use what you possess: The woods would be silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.” Unknown

Charlie On the MTA

Let me tell you the story Saying, ‘What will become of me? Of a man named Charlie How can I afford to see On a tragic and fateful day My sister in Chelsea He put ten cents in his pocket, Or my cousin in Roxbury?’ Kissed his wife and family Went to ride on the MTA Charlie’s wife goes down To the Scollay Square station Charlie handed in his dime Every day at quarter past two At the Kendall Square Station And through the open window And he changed for Jamaica Plain She hands Charlie a sandwich When he got there the conductor told As the train comes rumblin’ through. him, ‘One more nickel.’ As his train rolled on Charlie could not get off that train. Through Greater Boston Charlie looked around and sighed, Chorus: ‘Well, I’m sore and disgusted Did he ever return, And I’m absolutely busted; No he never returned I guess this is long ride.’ And his fate is still unlearn’d He may ride forever Now you citizens of Boston, ‘neath the streets of Boston Don’t you think it’s a scandal He’s the man who never returned. That the people have to pay and pay Vote for Walter A. O’Brien Now all night long And fight the fare increase Charlie rides through the tunnels Get poor Charlie off the MTA.

Circle Game *

Yesterday a child came out to wander Caught a dragon-fly inside a jar Fearful of the rolling of the thunder And tearful at the falling of a star

CHORUS: And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We’re captured on a carousel of time You can’t return you can only look Behind from where you came And go round and round and round In a circle game

Now the girl moves ten times round the seasons Skated over ten clear frozen ponds Words like when you’re older must appease her And promises of someday make her dream

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town And they tell her take your time it won’t be long now ‘Til you drag your feet to slow the circle down

So the years go by and now the girl is twenty Though her dreams have lost some grandeur coming true They’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through.

Hippo Song

What can make a hippopotamus smile? What can make him walk for more than a mile? It’s not a tub of candy that will make him fat. Or walking around in a paper hat. Because that’s not what hippos do. What do they do? They ooze through the gooz without any shoes. They wade in the water until their lips turn blue. Because that’s what hippos do!

Home, home on the range Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day

How often at night where the heavens are bright With the light of the glittering stars Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed If their glory exceeds that of ours

Home, home on the range Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day

Then give me a land where the bright diamond sand Flows leisurely down to the stream Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along Like a maid in a heavenly dream

I Knew This Place *

I knew this place, I knew it well, Dust upon the wooden (cabin) floor, Every sound and every smell, Feather rain and thunder roar, And every time I walked I fell We need not know the reason. For the first two years or so. And all these thoughts come back to There across the grassy yard, Me like ships across a friendly sea, I a young boy runnin' hard. Like breezes blowing endlessly, Brown and bruised and battle Like rivers running deep. Scarred and lost in sweet illusion. The day is done. The lights are low, The wheels of life are turning slow From my window I can see And as these visions turn and go, The fingers of an ancient tree. I lay me down to sleep. Reaching out it calls to me To climb its surly branches. But all my climbing days are gone And these tired legs I'm standin' on Would scarcely dare to leave the spot Upon which they are standin'.

And I remember every word From every voice I ever heard, Every frog and every bird, Yes, this is where it starts. A brother's (camper’s) laugh, the Sighing wind, This is where my life begins. This is where I learned to use my Hands and hear my heart.

This house (camp) is old, it carries on Like lyrics to an old time song, Always changed but never gone, This house (camp) can stand the seasons. Our lives pass on from door to door, 82

I Think We’re Alone Now

Children behave, that's what they say when we're together And watch how you play They don't understand And so we're

Running just as fast as we can, holding on to one another’s hands Trying to get away into the night and then you put your arms around me And we tumble to the ground and then you say

I think we're alone now, There doesn't seem to be anyone around I think we're alone now, The beating of our hearts is the only sound

Look at the way we gotta hide what we're doin' 'Cause what would they say If they ever knew And so we're

Running just as fast as we can, holding on to one another’s hands Trying to get away into the night and then you put your arms around me And we tumble to the ground and then you say

I think we're alone now, There doesn't seem to be anyone around I think we're alone now, The beating of our hearts is the only sound

Let Me Go *

CHORUS: Let me go, let me go I can hear the whistle blow I know that it’s calling to me Let me wander through this land With a dollar in my hand And the song of the sand and the sea

I have watched them drill and dig. And the towns grow up so big. And neon lights so bright I can not see. People come from every land, just to lend a helping hand. But it looks like there is no room for me.

With their hands and with their minds. They will see what they can find, to help each hungry family find a home. But, no matter how I try, I can only see the sky. And the open lands, where I am bound to roam.

I must see the western plains. I must feel the mountain rains. I must find a place that no one else has found. If I die then let it be, by the land of by the sea. But, not within the chaos of your town.

One Tin Soldier *

Listen children to a story That was written long ago ‘Bout a kingdom of a mountain And the valley far below On the mountain was a treasure Buried deep beneath a stone And the valley people swore They’d have it for their very own

CHORUS: So go ahead and hate your neighbor Go ahead and cheat a friend Do it in the name of heaven You’ll be justified in the end There won’t be any trumpets blowing Come the judgement day On the bloody morning after One tin soldier walked away

Then the people in the valley Sent a message to the hill Asking for the buried treasure Tons of gold for which they’d kill Came an answer from the mountain With our brothers we will share All the secrets of our mountain And the riches buried there

Then the valley cried with anger Mount your horses draw your swords And they killed the mountain people Told it was their just reward

Now they stood beside the treasure On the mountain dark and red Turned the stone and looked beneath Peace on Earth is all it said 120

Rolling Down to Old Maui

It's a real tough life full of toil and strife we whaler men undergo We don't give a hang when the gale is done how hard the winds do blow We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground with a good ship taut and free We don't give a hang when the gale is done Rolling down to Old Maui

CHORUS: Rolling down to Old Maui me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground Rolling down to Old Maui

Once more we sail with the Northerly gale through the ice and sleet and rain Them coconut fronds in the Tropic lands we soon shall see again Six hard long months have passed away in the cold Kamchatka Sea But now we're bound from the Arctic ground Rolling down to Old Maui

How soft the breeze of the tropic seas now the ice is far astern Them native maids in them island glades are awaiting our return Their big brown eyes even now look out hoping some fine day to see Our baggy sails runnin' fore the gales Rolling down to Old Maui

And now we sail with a Northerly gale towards our island home Our mainmast sprung our whaling done and we ain't got far to roam Our stunsil boots are carried away what care we for that sound A living gale is after us Thank God, we're homeward bound

Spiders Web *

CHORUS It’s a web like a Spider’s Web, Made of silk and light and shadow. Spun by the moon in my room at night. It’s a web made to catch a dream, Hold it tight 'til I awaken. As if to tell me my dream is alright.

Down in the valley, there’s a mission, By the old oak tree. Near the mission, there’s a fountain, Where my love told me...

On the evening I was leaving, She was by my side. I was sleeping, she was weeping, As she said to me...

I met a stranger, His name was danger. We rode side by side. Down in Santa Fe, I killed a man they say. Danger told me to ride.

Now if I return, They will hang me, On the old oak tree. Down in the valley, Near the mission, Where my love told me...

They'll have to make the best of Five passengers set sail that day, things, For a three hour tour, It's an uphill climb. A three hour tour. The first mate and his Skipper, too, The weather started getting rough, Will do their very best, But the tiny ship was tossed. To make the others comfortable If not for the courage of the fearless In the tropic island nest. crew The Minnow would be lost. No phone, no lights, no motor car, The Minnow would be lost. Not a single luxury Like Robinson Crusoe The ship's aground on the shore It's primitive as can be. Of this uncharted desert isle With Gilligan, So join us here each week my friends, The Skipper too. You're sure to get a smile, A millionaire and his wife, From seven stranded castaways A movie star, Here on Gilligan's Isle! The professor and Mary Ann,

The Cat Came Back Old Mr. Johnson (Mr. Jones) had troubles of his own He had a black cat that wouldn’t leave his home He tried and he tried to give that cat away But it always came back The very next day CHORUS: The cat came back The very next day Oh the cat came back They thought he was a goner But the cat came back It just wouldn’t stay away, away, away Ba-da-da-da-da-da-da He gave it to a man goin’ way out west He told him to give it to the one he loved the best The train took the corner and then it jumped the rail Not a soul was left, to tell the gruesome tale But... The man around the corner swore he’d shoot that cat He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite He waited and he waited for that cat to come around 97 pieces of the man was all they found But... He gave it to a man going up in a balloon He told him for to give it to the man up in the moon The balloon came down about 90 miles away And where the man is now I dare not to say But... He gave it to a fisherman with a dollar note He told him for to take it up the river in a boat They tied a rope around it's neck, it must have weighed a pound But they had to drag the river for the fisherman was drowned But... The A-bomb fell just the other day The H-bomb fell in the same old way Russia, China and then the U.S.A The human race was finished, without a chance to pray But... 157

This Land is Your Land *

This land is your land, this land is my land From California, to the New York Island From the redwood forest, to the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and me As I was walking a ribbon of highway I saw above me an endless skyway I saw below me a golden valley This land was made for you and me

I’ve roamed and rambled (And) I’ve followed my footsteps To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts And all around me a voice was sounding This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining as I was strolling The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling The fog was lifting a voice come chanting This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin’ - I saw a sign there And that sign said - no tres- passin’ But on the other side .... it didn’t say nothin! Now that side was made for you and me!

Time Passes On *

Time passes on like a river that must always run; Now you are gone but I will have you till time is done. You can never take away The love you gave me yesterday, And I don't have to capture you 'Cause you're here in my memory.

My life goes on like a song that is never still; I'll sing that song to the emptiness I'll never fill. I don't need your To see your face in front of me. We may never touch again But you're here in this melody.

What once was will always be, And you've left your imprint on me. Sometimes I think it's the spark of conflict With which we affect most heavily. But I hope if you think of me You'll remember only harmony and

Time passes on like a river that must always run; Now you are gone but I will have you till time is done. You can never take away The love you gave me yesterday, And I don't have to capture you 'Cause you're here in my memory.

Titanic

Oh they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue And they thought they had a ship That the water wouldn’t go though But the Lord put up his hand/ It was a cold and rainy morning Said; the ship would never land/ When the iceberg hit the ship

CHORUS: It was sad when the great ship went down Oh Lordy it was sad (How sad?) Mighty sad (Too bad!) It was sad when the great ship went down To the bottom of the sea Husbands and wives little children lost their lives It was sad when the great ship went down

They were on the English shore, when the rain began to pour And the rich refused to associate with the poor So they put them down below, and they were the first to go

They sent the lifeboats out, on the dark and stormy sea And the band started playing "Nearer my God to thee" All the fishies swam around, and the children they did drown

Oh the moral of this story, as you can plainly see Is to wear a life preserver, when you go out to see The Titanic never make it across the ocean blue

Today *

CHORUS: Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine I’ll taste your strawberries I’ll drink your sweet wine A million tomorrows shall all pass away Ere I forget all the joys that are mine today

I’ll be a dandy and I’ll be a rover You’ll know who I am, by the song that I sing I’ll feast at your table, I’ll sleep in your clover Who cares what tomorrow may bring

I can’t be contented with yesterdays glories I can’t live on promises, winter to spring Today is my moment and now is my story I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing

I’m just as restless as wind blowing westward I can’t stay in anyone place for too long I’ll love you today but I’ll leave you tomorrow By morning you know I’ll be gone

When I 1st Came To This Land

When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man, So I got myself a farm and I did what I could. And I called my farm: “Muscle in my arm”, For the land was sweet and good and I did what I could.

When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man, So I got myself a shack and I did what I could. And I called my shack: “Break my back”, And I called my farm: “Muscle in my arm” For the land was sweet and good and I did what I could.

When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man, So I got myself a cow and I did what I could. And I called my cow: “No milk now”, And I called my shack: “Break my back”, And I called my farm: “Muscle in my arm” For the land was sweet and good and I did what I could.

When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man, So I got myself a hen and I did what I could. And I called my hen: “Now and then”, And I called my cow: “No milk now”, And I called my shack: “Break my back”, And I called my farm: “Muscle in my arm” For the land was sweet and good and I did what I could.

When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man, So I got myself a truck and I did what I could. And I called my truck: “Out of luck”, And I called my hen: “Now and then”, And I called my cow: “No milk now”, And I called my shack: “Break my back”, And I called my farm: “Muscle in my arm” For the land was sweet and good and I did what I could.

Wicker Arm Chairs

I remember a time When it all seemed so young French green, an oasis “A” field in the sun Playing hard, making new friends ‘Til each day is done Singing music for free May it always be sung

CHORUS: And my friends, as we sit, in our wicker arm chairs We rock back and laugh on the times that we shared We swung through the trees Shot through the air And our candles so brightly burned

No matter how far I drift or I roam The oceans the forests or the cities of stone A candle burns bright ‘neath the sky’s starry dome Marks ever the place that I’ll take for my home

And though our days here too soon come to an end Your candle burns bright for it’s lit by a friend And your candle it burns ‘neath the sky’s starry dome Marks ever the place you can take for your home

You Are my Sunshine *

CHORUS: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy, when skies are grey You’ll never know dear, how much I love you Please don’t take my sunshine away

The other night dear, while I lay sleeping I dreamt I held you in my arms When I awoke dear I was mistaken So I held my head and I cried

I’ll always love you, and make you happy If you will only do the same But if you leave me to love another You’ll regret it all someday

You told me once dear, you’d always love me And no one else would come between But now you’ve left me to love another You have shattered all of my dreams
