Scenic valley in Chile home of good $7

By Renie and Sterling Steves Star-Telegram

Our aim in this column is to find enjoyable, flavorful wines for good value. At times we have gone through long dry spells, but the market now offers an abundance of pleasing wines well under $10.

We discovered Vina Tarapaca 1997, 1997, 1996 and 1996 (all line-priced at approximately $7) on a trip to Chile last year. Distribution at the time was scant, but now Tarapaca has become readily available.

Destinations in Chile are challenging, and our grasp of the language is another challenge, so we hired a driver to take us from Santiago to the lush Maipo Valley. We traveled first on a freeway, then on dirt roads; a small river was on one side, rolling hills on the other, and horses were feeding in the valley below. Out of nowhere, in this valley paradise, appeared a huge, vine-covered Spanish colonial house similar to a French chateau. Twenty rooms are available for industry guests. During our visit, a group of 36 retailers from Denmark were visiting. Although Tarapaca has been a since 1874, substantial renovations have been made. The winery is a long, wide, red brick building with state-of-the-art equipment and a new red-wine aging cellar. A museum and library, to be attached by an underground walkway, were being built.

No wood is used in the white wines, so they retain their freshness and varietal character.

The sauvignon blanc has melon, pear and green apple on the nose, with herbal nuances to balance the taste. The abundant fruit in this wine jumps out and speaks if you serve it chilled, but not ice cold. A soft, rounded mouth feel in the chardonnay is reminiscent of such tropical fruits as mango and pineapple. A little more acidity would have tasted good to us. Both the merlot and the cabernet sauvignon were friendly to drink. There was no tannin tail to bite tlirough, just even, smooth wines to enjoy. There should not be a shortage of these wines, because Tarapaca owns 1,480 acres in this valley, most of which are planted. Long-term leases exist for several hundred more acres in Maipo, and more acreage will be planted in Casablanca Valley this year.

Beringer Wine Estates entered into a cooperative "technical" agreement in 1996 with Tarapaca. Sergio Correa has been a winemaker in Chile for 25 years, the last six at Tarapaca. Beringer Wine World Estate winemakers David Schlottman of Napa Ridge and Ed Sbragia of Beringer visit and consult with Correa, walking , tasting wines and working on blends. Besides the $7 estate wines, Tarapaca makes Reservas at about $10 and Gran Reservas at approximately $15. ^

roduct: VINATARAPAC/ Gran Reserva

TASTlf^G NOTES Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon The Gran Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a forward, chocolately, smoky nose leading into a wine of impressive intensity. Ripe black fruit flavours are intense and concentrated, balanced with rich coffee, chocolate and elements to create a smoothly harmonious whole, on the palate the wine lingers, supple and voluptuous, with excellent body and tannins that promise ageing potential. This is the wine that Santiago's finest restaurateurs rank highest on their wine lists and the firts glass completely confirms its reputation.

TASTING NOTES Gran Reserva Merlot Wine with intense red-blue colour. Ripe berries, coffee, tobacco, smoke, vanilla and coconut aroma. Exquisite wine, dry on the palate with great intensity and good body. Appear berries, tobacco, pepper and intense and soft tannins. Intense, warm and long after taste.

TASTING NOTES Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc Bright yellow colour wine with toasted nuts aroma, excellent bouquet. Elegant and refined taste, with ripe peaches notes. It is soft, balanced, long and tenacious. The acidity allows the oak to respect the wi as well as the wine the oak. Fine wine and nice after taste.

TASTING NOTES Gran Reserva Chardonnay The Vina Tarapaca Gran Reserva Chardonnay is an uncommonly rich, developed wine an intense nose ofpears, vanilla and butterscotch. On the palate tiers offlavor unfold in a symphony of ripe pear, tropical pineapple, butter and cittrusy notes which are framed and supported by good acidic structure and oaky depth. This is a remarkably well-balanced, luxuriant Chardonnay which bolds its own in the big, creamy opulent Chardonnays for which the best California producers are famous. Simply sublime for a truly special meal.
