  • MORY KANTE a PARIS by Lucy Durán Published in the Griots Of
MORY KANTE A PARIS By Lucy Durán Published in Folk Roots 175 (Jan/Feb 1998): 40-47 The griots of Mali and Guinea have their own way of talking: they call it "jelikan" - Jeli (griot) language. It's dense and full of metaphors and aphorisms and philosophical observations. Proverbs are its pepper. Proverbs allow for quite biting comments, without being specific. They're like a code to a whole way of lateral thinking. In jelikan, entire, meaningful conversations can be conducted purely as a series of proverbs. Backstage with Mory Kante at the annual Francophonie Trade Fair in London last March, waiting to introduce myself, I overheard him using a string of phrases like "an empty bag will not stand up", "the crocodile is immune to the water", and "the head of a rooster does not hide in a soup". I could see a couple of fans and journalists looking perplexed. Mory Kante the doyen of techno-kora music, author of Yeke yeke, the biggest African dance-floor track ever, seemed to be talking in riddles. This was the sort of talk I have come to expect from the older generation of Malian musicians living in Bamako, but not from someone who has lived for nearly fourteen years in Paris, and who is known as the "Ambassador of French music". I remembered reading a review in Melody Maker written in 1988, at the height of Kante's success: "unlike his Nigerian neighbour Fela Kuti, Kante doesn't give interviews backstage in his knickers, but instead dons a dapper white silk suit and silk scarf with a Pierre Cardin monogram and we adjourn to a restaurant for what turns out to be a journalist's nightmare - an interview with a man who speaks mostly in metaphors and hurried French..." (30.7.88) When it was my turn to say hello, he was polite but distracted, if not exactly hurried.

  • Film & Video Reviews
Yearbook for Traditional Music (2019), 51, 307–324 Film & Video Reviews Crossing over the Arirang Pass. 2018. Directedby Ko Jeongja and Terada Yoshitaka. DVD. The National Museum of Ethnology. Crossing over the Arirang Pass, directed by Ko Jeongja and Terada Yoshitaka, unveils a culturally complex post-colonial existence of Koreans in Japan known as “Zainichi Koreans.” Zainichi Koreans, sometimes simply referred to as “Zainichi” (“residing in Japan”), are ethnic Koreans who migrated or were forcefully brought to Japan during the colonial period (1910–1945) as well as their descendants. While the exact number is unknown, over 322,000 Zainichi Koreans with special permanent resident status live in Japan today. They are one of the largest ethnic minority groups in Japan. Throughout their history, Zainichi Koreans have suffered systemic discrimination and social marginalisation. To name a few examples, they are excluded from certain civil service positions, disenfranchised from the right to vote, and face harsh racial prejudice. Furthermore, the division of their homeland after WWII has fissured the Zainichi Korean community into a pro-North Korea group (Chongryon) and a pro-South Korea group (Mindan), obstructing the path toward Zainichi Korean coalition and advocacy. Across the generations, the lives and identities of Zainichi Koreans have been greatly affected by the constant interstate frictions between Japan, South Korea, and North Korea. Focusing on their personal narratives and music-making, Crossing over the Arirang Pass sheds light on the plight of this little-known community and uncovers the lived experiences and identity struggles of second and third generation Zainichi Korean performers who are caught between their birthland and divided homeland.

Photo: Lucy Durán ___________________________________________________________________________ 1 1. ESSAY: “Radio as research: fresh perspectives on Oumou Sangaré’s music” This radio documentary and accompanying transcript seek to create, for both non- specialist and specialist audiences, an authoritative picture of the sonic, cultural, geographical and emotional world of Mali’s iconic female artist, Oumou Sangaré. It does so through the medium of sound, supported by complementary written word, intertwining music, interviews, and location reports recorded in 2003 in Bamako (where Sangaré was born and grew up and continues to live), and in Wasulu, the region in southern Mali where Sangaré’s parents are from, and whose regional traditions are her main inspiration. The music featured on the programme is taken primarily from a compilation double CD, Oumou, released in 2003, which features tracks from Sangaré’s three previous international releases Moussoulou, Ko sira, and Worotan, as well as some songs from cassettes released in West Africa only. There are also original unpublished field recordings made exclusively for the programme, during a trip with Sangaré to Wasulu – one of her rare visits to the region –featuring the two main regional styles that Sangaré draws on: hunters’ songs, and songs for the masquerade, sogoninkun.
