  • Scheduled from June 26 to July 31, 2O11, This Special Tour Includes Selected Dates at Major Festivals & Venues Around Europ
An exceptional tour by a collaborative ensemble featuring KONONO N°1, DEERHOOF, JUANA MOLINA, KASAI ALLSTARS, WILDBIRDS & PEACEDRUMS and SKELETONS The music created by Congolese bands Konono N°1 and Kasai Allstars (collectively known as ‘Congotronics’) has been enthusiastically acclaimed by everyone in the indie rock scene, from artists to fans to media. Released at the end of 2010, the epic double-album entitled Tradi-Mods vs Rockers: Alternative Takes on Congotronics was a collective tribute by 26 rock and electronic artists, who came up with their own, creative interpretations of the Congotronics bands’ music. The logical next step in this transcontinental encounter: this spring & summer, a special collaborative ensemble consisting of ten Congolese and ten indie rock musicians will get together to create a common, entirely fresh repertoire, building bridges between their respective worlds, for what promises to be one of the most spectacular musical events of 2o11. Appearing under the name CONGOTRONICS vs ROCKERS, the ensemble will include Konono N°1, Kasai Allstars, mighty US band Deerhoof, unique Argentinian artist Juana Molina, explosive Swedish experimental pop duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums, & inventive Brooklyn band Skeletons (represented by their leader Matt Mehlan), 2o musicians in total, all performing together. Scheduled from June 26 to July 31, 2o11, this special tour includes selected dates at major festivals & venues around Europe & Japan. Crammed Discs, the instigator of CONGOTRONICS VS ROCKERS, will be 30 in 2011. The label will celebrate its anniversary in style with this project, which is aptly emblematic of Crammed’s adventures during these three decades. MINI-BIOGRAPHIES The music of Konono N°1 has elicited spectacular reactions ever since the release of the inaugural "Congotronics" album in 2004.

  • MORY KANTE a PARIS by Lucy Durán Published in the Griots Of
MORY KANTE A PARIS By Lucy Durán Published in Folk Roots 175 (Jan/Feb 1998): 40-47 The griots of Mali and Guinea have their own way of talking: they call it "jelikan" - Jeli (griot) language. It's dense and full of metaphors and aphorisms and philosophical observations. Proverbs are its pepper. Proverbs allow for quite biting comments, without being specific. They're like a code to a whole way of lateral thinking. In jelikan, entire, meaningful conversations can be conducted purely as a series of proverbs. Backstage with Mory Kante at the annual Francophonie Trade Fair in London last March, waiting to introduce myself, I overheard him using a string of phrases like "an empty bag will not stand up", "the crocodile is immune to the water", and "the head of a rooster does not hide in a soup". I could see a couple of fans and journalists looking perplexed. Mory Kante the doyen of techno-kora music, author of Yeke yeke, the biggest African dance-floor track ever, seemed to be talking in riddles. This was the sort of talk I have come to expect from the older generation of Malian musicians living in Bamako, but not from someone who has lived for nearly fourteen years in Paris, and who is known as the "Ambassador of French music". I remembered reading a review in Melody Maker written in 1988, at the height of Kante's success: "unlike his Nigerian neighbour Fela Kuti, Kante doesn't give interviews backstage in his knickers, but instead dons a dapper white silk suit and silk scarf with a Pierre Cardin monogram and we adjourn to a restaurant for what turns out to be a journalist's nightmare - an interview with a man who speaks mostly in metaphors and hurried French..." (30.7.88) When it was my turn to say hello, he was polite but distracted, if not exactly hurried.

Press Book www.crammed.be THE SUNDAY TIMES 22nd November 2010 Mark Edwards UNCUT February 2011 Nigel Williamson INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY THE TELEGRAPH 28th November 2010 27th November 2010 Howard Male Mark Hudson http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/article-23901410-cds-of-the- week-duffy-the-black-eyed-peas-and-robyn.do WORLD Tradi-Mods Vs Rockers Alternative Takes on Congotronics (Crammed Discs) **** My heart sinks when the remix album turns up and a characterful and distinctive artist gets repackaged to blend in with everything else. But that's not the case here. Alternative Takes on Congotronics has 26 indie rock bands and musicians reworking material from extraordinary Congolese bands including Konono No 1 and the Kasai Allstars. For instance, Deerhoof play a cover version of a Kasai Allstars track they learned by slowing it right down and transposing the parts from thumb pianos on to guitars. It's brilliant. Animal Collective throw samples into their guitar and drum work. Everyone brings a different approach to make an eclectic, dance floor-friendly double album that should be a cult success. Simon Broughton VA / Congotronics: Tradi-Mods Vs Rockers Available on: Crammed Discs 2xCD When Brussels-based Crammed Discs dropped that first Konono Nº1 Congotronics album in 2004, it had the same kind of “shock of the new” impact in contemporary World music circles as say, ‘Anarchy in the UK’, had among jaded rock fans in the mid-1970s. And like ‘Anarchy’ and other pioneering punk records, it was notable for a strong DIY ethic, a captivatingly dirty sound and a refusal to pay lip service to the earnest “authenticity” that all “worthy” musical endeavours were expected to embody.

  • The Sublime Frequencies of New Old Media
The Sublime Frequencies of New Old Media David Novak A new world of world music was built on Cambodian Rocks. The CD was released on the New York City – based Parallel World label in 1996, and for most listeners, it was hard to find anything else like it. The com- pilation collected tracks from a number of legendary 1960s Phnom Penh bar bands, most of whose members were executed by the Khmer Rouge soon after the recordings were made. Their brief reinventions of garage rock powerfully echo the impact of the US presence in Southeast Asia and the global spread of record- ing and broadcast technologies during this period. On Cambodian Rocks, the Western listener hears the psychedelic sounds of Santana, James Brown, and the Animals anew through the ears of seemingly anonymous Cambodian musicians. The mystery of the music was amplified by the opaque presentation of its ori- gins. The compiler, Paul Wheeler, an American English teacher in Japan who had collected cassettes on a brief tour of Cambodia in 1994, provided no biographi- cal detail for the material, neglecting even track titles or artist names. Although several of these songs are beloved classics for Cambodians, the backgrounds and artistic intentions of the musicians were unknown for Western listeners. For those cognizant of Cambodian folk music styles, the mix of sounds might suggest the continuity of traditional vocal techniques and local song forms beneath the novel rhythms, reverb, and twang of imported rock music. But most North Americans, who heard this music for the first time in the 1990s, were surprised and intrigued I would like to acknowledge the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University for support in writing this article.
