21 OUR BELGIAN DELEGATES Osama Abdulrasol Quintet

Osama Abdulrasol’s cosmopolitan approach to his music stems from his personal search for freedom of expression. The virtuoso qanun player, composer & producer was born in Iraq into a deeply religious environment where music was forbidden. As a child, he secretly studied music from books and learnt to play any instrument he could find, while playing everything, from classical music, to heavy metal. It wasn’t un- til he left Iraq that he discovered the qanun, but he is today arguably one of the world’s most innovative exponents of the instrument. Composing, performing and collaborating across the genres with his highly-skilled Quintet, Abdulrasol moves imaginatively between the worlds of oriental and occidental classical music and jazz.

Line up: Osama Abdulrasol (qanun), Helena Schoeters (vo- cals), Philippe Thuriot (accordion), Lode Vercampt (cello), François Taillefer (percussion)

27 OUR BELGIAN DELEGATES Flat Earth Society (FES)

FES, led by composer/clarinettist Peter Vermeersch, is and remains Belgium’s most original and most daring ‘big band’. BOGGAMASTA (project a.o. 2017-2018) Peter Vermeersch and David Bovée – first guitarist of FES and BBC Radio 3 World Mu- sic Award winner of 2004 and 2007 with his Think of One – wrote an exuberant repertoire, bringing direct, energetic and fren- zied music: feverish, delirious and groovy with lots of electro!

Al Manara: A musical en- counter between Palestine and Occident, under the look of French philosopher Edgar Morin. Al Manara is a creation that gathers Belgian and Pales- tinian musicians around Ramzi Aburedwan and Eloi Baudimont. European polyphony answers to the poignant Palestinian mel- odies; the softness of Palestinian singing, chords, nay and per- cussions echoes the powerful European brass wind. The texts of the songs have been chosen within the works of the Palestin- ian poet, Mahmoud Darwich.

With their finely textured arrangements WÖR injects new en- ergy into 18th-century tunes from the Flanders region of Bel- gium. Their music shines an inventive spotlight, with a mod- ern twist, on tunes from these manuscripts.
