The author, Professor Abdul Azim Islahi, is a well-known specialist in the history of Islamic economic thought. In this respect, we have already published his following works: Contributions of Muslim Scholars to th Economic Thought and Analysis up to the 15 Century; Muslim th Economic Thinking and Institutions in the 16 Century, and A Study on th Muslim Economic Thinking in the 17 Century. The present work and the previous series have filled, to an extent, the gap currently existing in the study of the history of Islamic economic thought. In this study, Dr. Islahi has explored the economic ideas of Shehu Uthman dan Fodio of West Africa, a region generally neglected by researchers. He has also investigated the economic ideas of Shaykh Muhammad b. Abd al-Wahhab, who is commonly known as a religious renovator. Perhaps it would be a revelation for many to know that his economic ideas too had a role in his reformative endeavours. -

ACTUALITÉS politique étrangère | 1:2016 Understanding African Migrations By Alain Antil, Christophe Bertossi, Victor Magnani and Matthieu Tardis Alain Antil directs the sub-Saharan Africa program at the Institut français des relations internationales (French Institute of International Relations, Ifri). Christophe Bertossi is the director of the Centre for Migration and Citizenship at Ifri. Victor Magnani is a project leader in the sub-Saharan Africa program at Ifri. Matthieu Tardis is a researcher at the Centre for Migration and Citizenship at Ifri. There are numerous causes for population displacement in Africa; none of these are new, whether they occur within countries, across the continent, or toward Europe. The term “migrations” covers a wide range of situations, which differ in their internal and international implications. It is important to closely examine the causes of these mobilities. In 2015, 244 million people lived somewhere other than their country of nationality—a threefold increase in migrants compared to forty years ago. This increase has outstripped world popula- tion growth, even if it forms only a very small proportion of that popula- tion (around 3%, compared to 5% a century ago). -
Mali's Oumou Sa
Mali’s Oumou Sangaré and Ballake Sissoko receive Aga Khan Music Awards Lisbon, Portugal, 21 March 2019 – Mali’s Oumou Sangaré and Ballake Sissoko have been announced as laureates of the Aga Khan Music Award in the category of “Distinguished and Enduring Contributions to Music”. The two Malians are due to receive the Award from His Highness the Aga Khan at a ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, on 31 March. Oumou Sangaré is a celebrated Malian singer- songwriter widely known as “The Songbird of Wassoulou.” Born in 1968 to parents with origins in Wassoulou, a cultural region south of the Niger River that transects the borders of Mali, Ivory Coast, and Guinea. She dropped out of school as a child to help her mother raise the family by singing in the streets. She recorded her first album, Moussolou (Women) in 1990 with renowned Malian arranger Amadou Ba Guindo, selling more than 200,000 copies in Africa. Since then, she has released seven solo albums and performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including the Melbourne Opera, the Opéra de la Monnaie, and the Oslo World Music Festival. Sangaré has won numerous music awards and accolades, including the IMC-UNESCO International Music Prize in 2001, Sangaré’s music is inspired by the music and traditional dances of Wassoulou, and she is considered a cultural ambassador of the region. Her song lyrics discuss women’s rights and critique social issues such as gender inequality, child marriage, and polygamy. Ballake Sissoko is a Malian kora player and composer who is considered to be one of the most important musicians of his generation. -

From Golden Age Empires to Independence ORISSA DIAKITE Mali occupies a special place in African history. The very name Mali evokes in the African consciousness a period known as the Golden Age, when three great empires, whose fame spread far beyond their borders, ruled over the whole ofWest Africa. These empires-Ghana (8th to uth century), Mali (13th to 15th century), and Songha'i (15th to 16th century)-were among the first states in sub-Saharan Africa. Much of what we know about them comes from oral tradition, Arabic manuscripts, and archaeological evidence. Trans-Saharan trade made these empires prosperous, and, in turn, the political dominance of these states provided the stability and security necessary for the trade to thrive. Gold, the commodity most sought in North Africa, was found in abundance in West Africa and formed the basis of the commerce. Also important was salt, mined in the Sahara, and a number of cities arose on the southern edge of the desert to serve as centers for trade between the Arab-Berber world and black Africa among them Timbuktu (Tombouctou) and Djenne. MORY KANTE A PARIS By Lucy Durán Published in Folk Roots 175 (Jan/Feb 1998): 40-47 The griots of Mali and Guinea have their own way of talking: they call it "jelikan" - Jeli (griot) language. It's dense and full of metaphors and aphorisms and philosophical observations. Proverbs are its pepper. Proverbs allow for quite biting comments, without being specific. They're like a code to a whole way of lateral thinking. In jelikan, entire, meaningful conversations can be conducted purely as a series of proverbs. Backstage with Mory Kante at the annual Francophonie Trade Fair in London last March, waiting to introduce myself, I overheard him using a string of phrases like "an empty bag will not stand up", "the crocodile is immune to the water", and "the head of a rooster does not hide in a soup". I could see a couple of fans and journalists looking perplexed. Mory Kante the doyen of techno-kora music, author of Yeke yeke, the biggest African dance-floor track ever, seemed to be talking in riddles. This was the sort of talk I have come to expect from the older generation of Malian musicians living in Bamako, but not from someone who has lived for nearly fourteen years in Paris, and who is known as the "Ambassador of French music". I remembered reading a review in Melody Maker written in 1988, at the height of Kante's success: "unlike his Nigerian neighbour Fela Kuti, Kante doesn't give interviews backstage in his knickers, but instead dons a dapper white silk suit and silk scarf with a Pierre Cardin monogram and we adjourn to a restaurant for what turns out to be a journalist's nightmare - an interview with a man who speaks mostly in metaphors and hurried French..." (30.7.88) When it was my turn to say hello, he was polite but distracted, if not exactly hurried. -
