Urinary Tract Infections Urinary Tract Infections are not uncommon in individuals who intermittently catheterize. However, it is important to try to prevent UTIs for optimal health. A UTI can lead to a more serious infection if it goes from the bladder up into the kidneys and into the bloodstream. Although there are many effective antibiotics to treat UTIs, it is much better to prevent a UTI and the need for medication. Medicare Allowable Amounts Common causes of UTIs related to Intermittent Catheterization: In April 2008, Medicare changed the reimbursement of intermittent catheters • Inadequate fluid intake from 4 to 200 per month.
