Storytelling and Survival in the 'Murderer's House'
Storytelling and Survival in the “Murderer’s House”: Gender, Voice(lessness) and Memory in Helma Sanders-Brahms’ Deutschland, bleiche Mutter by Rebecca Reed B.A., University of Victoria, 2003 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies © Rebecca Reed, 2009 University of Victoria All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. ii Storytelling and Survival in the “Murderer’s House”: Gender, Voice(lessness) and Memory in Helma Sanders-Brahms’ Deutschland, bleiche Mutter by Rebecca Reed B.A., University of Victoria, 2003 Supervisory Committee Dr. Helga Thorson, Supervisor (Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies) Dr. Charlotte Schallié, Departmental Member (Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies) Dr. Perry Biddiscombe, Outside Member (Department of History) iii Supervisory Committee Dr. Helga Thorson, Supervisor (Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies) Dr. Charlotte Schallié, Departmental Member (Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies) Dr. Perry Biddiscombe, Outside Member (Department of History) ABSTRACT Helma Sanders-Brahms’ film Deutschland, bleiche Mutter is an important contribution to (West) German cinema and to the discourse of Vergangenheitsbewältigung or “the struggle to come to terms with the Nazi past” and arguably the first film of New German Cinema to take as its central plot a German woman’s gendered experiences of the Second World War and its aftermath. In her film, Deutschland, bleiche Mutter, Helma Sanders-Brahms uses a variety of narrative and cinematic techniques to give voice to the frequently neglected history of non- Jewish German women’s war and post-war experiences. -

Friday 26th, 2005 Human Rights 89 Millimeter Germany / Belarus 2004/05 Running time: 77’ Director: Sebastian Heinzel Camera: Eugen Schlegel Editor: Lena Rem Production: Kloos und Co. Contact: [email protected] About the film: 89 Millimeter: This distance stands for the little difference between living in Belarus and in Western Europe. In Belarus the railway tracks are 89 millimetres wider than elsewhere in Europe. Belarus is situated right beyond the border of the new European Union. A gateway to another world. Some say, Belarus is home to the last dictatorship in Europe. 89 Millimeter is a film about coming of age. A young German filmmaker wants to find out how free people of his age really are in this country. He meets a political refugee, members of the resistance, a house painter who only recently was released from jail, a Go-Go-dancer, a journalist without any prospects and a patriotic soldier devoted to his country. The result is a stunning portrait of a post-soviet generation in a young nation that is torn apart between stagnation, protest and departure. About the director: Sebastian Heinzel was born 1979 in Kassel. After the school and his civil service in Philadelphia (USA) he studied film, drama and TV arts in Cologne. While studying he started shooting his own movies and moved to Berlin. He has worked for music television, newspapers and magazines and finally decided to become a documentary filmmaker. His interests are Eastern Europe, subculture, the metropolis and its people. Since 2004 Sebastian Heinzel studies film directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. -

RETROSPEKTIVE BERLINALE CLASSICS VERANSTALTUNGEN 7. BIS 17. FEBRUAR 2019 20161102_LogobalkenA5HF_148x17_RZ.indd 1 08.11.16 12:07 SelBSTBeSTimmT. INFORMATION to USERS the Most Advanced Technology Has Been Used to Photo Graph and Reproduce This Manuscript from the Microfilm Master
INFORMATION TO USERS The most advanced technology has been used to photo graph and reproduce this manuscript from the microfilm master. UMI films the original text directly from the copy submitted. Thus, some dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from a computer printer. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyrighted material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are re produced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand comer and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is available as one exposure on a standard 35 mm slide or as a 17" x 23" black and white photographic print for an additional charge. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. 35 mm slides or 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge.
