TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals take on the Nashville Predators at Capital One Arena on Sunday in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals are 13-10-1-2 all-time against the Predators.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT What a Year - The Capitals close out 2018 with one final game against the Nashville Predators. In 2018, the Capitals have a 49-23-7 record, the sixth most wins in the NHL. Washington's 268 goals rank sixth, while their 231 goals against rank 11th. The year was also capped with the franchise's first . During the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Capitals overcame a pair of home overtime losses to start the postseason in the First Round against the Blue Jackets; vanquished the Penguins; rallied from a three-game losing streak to defeat the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final, including a road win in Game 7; and topped the Golden Knights in the Final. Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller scored 2:31 apart midway through the third period as the Capitals rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the final frame to clinch the Stanley Cup. The milestone victory came in the franchise's 43rd season of competition and their 3,701st game (regular-season and playoff) since joining the NHL in 1974-75. The Capitals ended the fourth-longest wait for an NHL team before winning its first Stanley Cup. The Capitals' win also ended a championship drought for fans of metro D.C. pro sports teams, who hadn't celebrated a championship since Washington's NFL team won the Super Bowl in 1992.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Playing Right - In December, the Capitals have trailed for 114:39 cumulative minutes, the fewest minutes during that span, and the Capitals’ 52.38 cumulative shot attempt percentage when the game is within one goal (374 shot attempts for, 340 against) at five-on- five ranks eighth in the NHL. Washington's 551 allowed shot attempts at five-on-five is the 10th lowest total in the NHL. In total, 21 of the Capitals' 22 players that have played in December have recorded a point at five-on-five. Additionally, the Capitals' 17 allowed goals at five-on-five ranks the lowest total in the NHL, while their 34 goals rank fifth, and their 66.67 goals for percentage ranks first in the NHL. Alex Ovechkin's seven goals at five-on-five are tied for fourth in the NHL, while Evgeny Kuznetsov's seven assists lead the Capitals and are tied for the 15th most in the NHL.

Two Firsts - Defensemen Tyler Lewington and Madison Bowey each scored their first career NHL goal to help the Capitals defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 and extend their win streak to four games, their road win streak to a season-high five games and win for the ninth time in the last 10 games overall. The pair became the first defensemen in franchise history to each score their first career regular- season goal in the same game and the 19th pair to do so in NHL history. Lewington and Bowey scored on Senators goaltender Marcus Hogberg, who made his NHL debut. It marked the 12th time in NHL history in which two teammates each scored their first career goal on a goaltender making his NHL debut and first since Oct. 14, 1967, when Los Angeles forwards Brian Kilrea and Gord Labossiere did so against Philadelphia netminder Doug Favell. Lewington also recorded an assist (his first NHL point) and was charged with a fighting major, marking the first “Gordie Howe hat trick” in seven years (Troy Brouwer, Dec. 7, 2011 at Ottawa) and the first time a Capitals defenseman recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick in the regular season since Kevin Hatcher (Feb. 10, 1991 versus Philadelphia).

Great 8 – Alex Ovechkin leads all players in points (117) and goals (69) during the 2018 calendar year. Ovechkin leads the NHL this season with 29 goals, and he's looking to become the first player to reach the 30 goal mark. Should he score tonight, it'll be the fifth time in his career Ovechkin reached the mark before any player, all of which occurred in the last seven seasons. Additionally, Ovechkin is one goal shy of joining Mike Gartner (15) as the only players in NHL history to begin their career with 14 consecutive 30-goal seasons, and one of three players in NHL history with 14 seasons in a row at any point in his career with at least 30 goals (Gartner: 17; Jaromir Jagr: 15 seasons). Coming into tonight’s game. Ovechkin is now five goals shy of passing Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list. Among the top 15 goal scorers all-time, Ovechkin's 0.61 goals per game ranks second (Mario Lemieux: 0.75 goals per game). Wayne Gretzky holds the NHL's all-time record for goals scored (894) and has played 447 more games than Ovechkin. Should Ovechkin play in 447 more games and maintain his 0.61 goals per game rate, Ovechkin is on a 908-goal pace. Ovechkin, who is already the all-time goal scorer among Russian-born players, is now 13 points away from passing Sergei Fedorov (483g, 696a in 1,248 games) to become the highest scoring Russian-born player all-time. Since entering the NHL in 2005-06, Ovechkin has recorded 197 more points than Evgeni Malkin, who ranks second among Russian-born players during that time frame in points. After winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy, Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history to win a Calder Memorial Trophy, an Art Ross Trophy, a Hart Memorial Trophy, a Ted Lindsay Award, a Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy and the Stanley Cup.

Super Carly - John Carlson's 13 multi-point games leads the Capitals, is tied for 14th in the NHL and is more multi-point games than any other defenseman. Carlson has led the Capitals in ice time in 30 of the 36 games this season and leads the team and ninth in the NHL in TOI per game (25:27). Carlson has 37 points this season (6g, 31a), which is the fourth most by a defenseman, and his 31 assists are tied for the second most by a defenseman. Carlson has been on the ice for 46 goals for at five-on-five this season, which leads the Capitals and is the third most in the NHL (Toronto Maple Leafs Morgan Rielly: 53; Ottawa Senators Thomas Chabot: 48). The Capitals are 16-2-2 this season when Carlson records a point. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Carlson's 105 points (21g, 84a) are tied with Brent Burns for the most among defensemen. Carlson's 1.16 assist per 60 minutes of five-on-five play over the course of his career rank second among defensemen selected in the 2008 NHL Draft (Erik Karlsson: 1.46), and his 2.16 points per 60 at five-on- five rank first over the last two seasons.

Puck Stops Here - Pheonix Copley stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators. Copley and Braden Holtby have combined to stop 130 of the last 134 shots (.970 save percentage). Since Nov. 16, the Capitals have allowed a League- fewest 45 goals. During that span, Holtby is 10-3-0, and his 2.21 goals against average ranks second and his .930 save percentage each rank second among goalies with at least 10 games played during that time frame. Copley is 6-0-0 with a 2.48 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Additionally, Copley is 9-1-0 in his last 10 appearances.

Additional Capitals Notes On New Year's Eve - Today's game marks the second time in franchise history the Capitals have played on New Year's Eve (1-0-0-0) and the 10th time overall (5-4-0-0). Additionally, the Capitals hold a 4-0-0 record this year when they play on Monday's and a 3-2-0 record when they play before 6 p.m.

Inching Towards Milestones - Nicklas Backstrom is one assist away from passing Henrik Zetterberg (623) for the eighth-most assists by a Swedish-born player. John Carlson is four goals shy of passing Larry Murphy (86) for the sixth most goals in franchise history by a defenseman. Evgeny Kuznetsov is two points shy of becoming the seventh player from the 2010 NHL Draft class to reach the 300 point mark. T.J. Oshie is two goals shy of reaching the 200 goal mark.

On Par for Career Years - Jakub Vrana is tied for second on the Capitals with 11 goals, and he's on pace for a 44 point season (11g, 9a in 37 games) after recording 27 points (13g, 14a) as a rookie last season. Tom Wilson has 19 points (11g, 8a) in 18 games this season after setting career highs in goals, assists and points last year (14g, 21a). Brett Connolly has 22 points (8g, 14a) in 37 games, on pace for 48 points, which would almost double his single season high of 25 (9g, 16a) set in the 2015-16 season as a member of the .
