TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals take on the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. This will mark the first time in franchise history the Capitals will play the Golden Knights.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced in the Capitals' 4-3 overtime victory against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 19 to record his 20th win of the season. Through 27 games, Holtby is 20-7-0, making him one of just two with 20 wins this season (Tampa Bay's : 21). Holtby's 20 wins in his first 27 games of the season is the second-fastest sprint to the 20 win mark in his career. During the 2015-16 season, when Holtby tied Martin Brodeur's all-time single-season record of 48 wins, Holtby recorded his 20th win in his 25th game of the season. Holtby has recorded at least 41 wins in each of the last three seasons. He would become the first goaltender in NHL history to record four-straight seasons with at least 40 wins. Earlier this season, Holtby recorded his 200th career win on Nov. 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in his 319th-career win, becoming the second-fastest goaltender in NHL history to reach 200 career wins (Ken Dryden: 311). His .935 save percentage at even strength this year ranks fourth among goaltenders with at least 20 games played this season.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS

Nice and Kuzy- Evgeny Kuznetsov recorded a goal and an assist against the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 22, his 12th goal of the season, which ranks second on the team. All 12 of Kuznetsov's goals have come within his last 27 games. Since Kuznetsov's first goal of the season, scored against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 26, Kuznetsov's 12 goals are just one shy of Alex Ovechkin's 13 during that same span and are tied for the 12th-most in the NHL. This season, Kuznetsov has recorded 10 multi-point games, including four games where he recorded at least three points. Since the 2015-16 season, Kuznetsov's 45 games with at least two points is tied for the 12th-most in the NHL.

Osh Babe - T.J. Oshie scored a goal against the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 22, his first goal since returning from injury on Dec. 19 and his first goal since Nov. 18 against the Minnesota Wild. That marked Oshie's 11th goal of the season in his 30th game of the season, a 30-goal pace over the course of an 82-game season. Oshie reached the 30-goal milestone last season with a career-high 33 goals. Prior to the Dec. 22 game against the Coyotes, Oshie's 18.5 shooting percentage since joining the Capitals in the 2015-16 season ranks third in the NHL among players with at least 100 games played. Since joining the Capitals, Oshie's 70 goals are tied for 19th in the NHL.

Tis the Season - Since Barry Trotz joined the team in 2014-15, the Capitals have posted a 35-9-7 record in the month of December, ranking first in the NHL in points during that span (77). This season, the Capitals are 8-1-1 in December, with 38 goals for and 24 goals against, ranking second and tied for 11th, respectively, in the NHL. In his career, in the month of December, Holtby has posted a 30-8-8 record with five shutouts, a 2.27 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. Nicklas Backstrom has tallied 141 points (48g, 93a) in 132 career games in December, marking his most career points in a month. Alex Ovechkin has posted 177 points (93g, 84a) in 155 career games in December.

Expansion Slayers - This matchup marks the first time in franchise history that Washington has played Vegas. Since the 1991 expansion era, when the San Jose Sharks were added to the NHL, the Capitals have played nine different expansion teams and hold a 5-3-1-0 record in games where they play an expansion team for the first time. The Capitals' first game against their most recent expansion opponent, the Minnesota Wild, came on Dec. 14, 2000, a 2-1 win. Olaf Kolzig stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced (.966 save percentage), with goals coming from Sergei Gonchar and the game-winner from Peter Bondra.

Climbing the Ranks - Barry Trotz recorded his 735th career win against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 19 and sits one win away from tying Lindy Ruff for fifth on the NHL's all-time coaching wins list. Trotz's next game will be his 1,479th career game, while Ruff coached 1,493 career games. Additionally, Trotz ranks sixth on the NHL's all-time games coached list. Since taking over as the Capitals' head coach in the 2014-15 season, the Capitals' 178-75-29 record and 385 points lead the NHL.

ADDITIONAL CAPITALS NOTES

Quite the Stretch - Over the last 16 games, the Capitals are 12-3-1 and are the only team with 12 wins in their last 16 games, through games played Dec. 22. During the stretch, which began Nov. 18 against the Minnesota Wild, the Capitals have scored 56 goals and allowed 39, which is tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, in the NHL. The Capitals have scored at least four goals in six of their last nine games and seven times over their last 15 games. Over the last 12 games, the Capitals have scored at least one goal in 30 of the 36 total periods.

Flying V - Jakub Vrana recorded an assist on T.J. Oshie's goal against the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 22, his fourth point in his last five games (2g, 2a). Vrana's 10 goals are tied for the sixth-most among NHL rookies this season. Vrana became the first Capitals rookie to reach the 10 goal mark since Evgeny Kuznetsov scored 11 in the 2014-15 season. Vrana is currently on a 23-goal pace over the course of a full regular season. The last Capitals rookie to reach the 20-goal mark was Alex Ovechkin in his 2005-06 rookie season, when he finished with 52. In total, the Capitals have had seven rookies reach the 20-goal mark, and only Ovechkin has reached the mark since the 1981-82 season, when both Bobby Carpenter (32) and Christopher Valentine (30) reached the milestone in their rookie seasons.

Big John - John Carlson has recorded a point in 21 of his 36 games this season. Carlson's 27 points (3g, 24a) is tied for second among NHL defensemen this season and his 24 assists rank second. Seven of Carlson's assists this season have come on a game- winning goal, which leads all Capitals this season. The Capitals are 16-5-1 when Carlson records a point. Over the course of an 82- game season, Carlson is on pace for 60 points, which would make Carlson the eighth defenseman in franchise history to record 60 points in a season and the first since Mike Green in 2009-10 (76 points, 19g, 57a). Since entering the NHL full time in the 2010-11 season, Carlson's 286 points (64g, 222a) rank 15th among NHL defensemen.

Put it on Net - The Capitals are 21-1-1 in games where they score at least three goals and 16-0-0 when they score at least four goals and 9-4-0 in games where they outshoot the opponent. Additionally, Washington is 14-0-1 when they lead after the first period and 15- 0-2 when they lead after the second period. Since Barry Trotz assumed the head coaching position in the 2014-15 season, the Capitals are 128-3-7 in games where they lead after two periods, good for a .934 win percentage, the second-highest win percentage in the NHL (Pittsburgh Penguins: .951 win percentage).

O from the D - John Carlson and Christian Djoos recorded an assist against the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 22. Capitals' defensemen have combined for 71 points this season, including 56 points over the last 26 games (John Carlson: 3g, 18a; Dmitry Orlov: 4g, 7a; Matt Niskanen, 2g, 7a; Madison Bowey: 6a; Brooks Orpik: 4a; Christian Djoos: 3a; Taylor Chorney, 1g, 1a).
