BARZ-ALL STAR: The NHL announced on Wednesday that Mathew Barzal will be the Islanders representative at the 2018 All-Star weekend in San Jose. Through 38 games this season, Barzal, leads all Islanders in points (38) and assists (26). Barzal is currently riding a six-game point streak (eight goals, three assists). This past week, he was named the player of the week for the period ending December 31, 2018. The 21-year-old center co-led the NHL with six points (five goals, one assist) in two games, including a natural hat-trick Saturday night in Toronto. Barzal became the third youngest player in franchise history to record a natural hat trick (Nystrom & Tavares) and the first Islander since 1986 to score a hat-trick in Toronto (Bossy).

DEVON'S DEBUT: Islanders rookie, Devon Toews’ OT winner on Thursday was his first career goal. Toews, 24, became just the third Islander to record his first NHL goal in overtime (Hickey, Martinek). Only 18 players in the history of the League have scored their first career goal in overtime. Toews made his NHL debut on Dec. 23 at Dallas recording a plus-1 rating in 18:05 TOI. Toews, 24, is currently tied for 12th among NHL rookies in plus/minus (+5). He was drafted by the Islanders in the Fourth Round (108th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft. With his debut last Sunday night, Toews joins Michael Dal Colle (1st, 5th) and Josh Ho-Sang (1st, 28th) of players from the Islanders 2014 draft class to make their NHL debuts. The Abbotsford, BC recorded 19 points (5G, 14A) in 24 games with the Sound Tigers this season, which still ranks second among team defensemen and fourth overall.

LEE-DING ALL AMERICANS: Last night against Ottawa, Anders Lee scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season (seventh power-play goal). Since the start of last season, Lee, an Edina, Minnesota native leads all US-Born players in both goals (54) & power-play goals (21).

ROB'IN GOALS: First year Islanders goaltender, Robin Lehner made 19 saves on Thursday to extend his winning streak to six games, good for a career-long. Lehner, 27, currently has a 2.13 GAA (2nd in the NHL) with a .929 SV% (3rd in the NHL). Over his last nine games, Lehner is has allowed just 10 goals and is 6-1-2 with a 1.15 GAA and .959 SV% Lehner, posted a 36-save shutout on Saturday in Toronto and followed it up with a 39 save win against his former team, the Buffalo Sabres. Lehner, 27, became the first Islander ever to the first Islander to record a shutout in Toronto and the first Islander goalie to ever record a shutout in the province of (TOR & OTT).

GREAT SCOTT! Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in the Islanders 3-1 win on December 31 vs. the Buffalo Sabres, to set a new career-high in assists. Mayfield, 26, has now established new career-highs in goals (3), assists (11), and points (14) through 37 games into his third NHL season. A St. Louis, MO native, Mayifeld is third on the team with a plus -13 rating and his 68 blocked shots leads all Islanders.

Trotz spent the previous four seasons as the Head Coach of the Washington Capitals.
