Capitals Development Camp Notes The Washington Capitals will host their 2016 Prospect Development Camp from CAMP SCHEDULE June 28 - July 2, 2016 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public. Tuesday, June 28 9:15 a.m.: Defense on ice (Public rink) Capitals development camp is an annual week-long summer session with on- and 9:15 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Capitals rink) off-ice workouts designed to help Capitals prospects improve their games and allow 3:40 p.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) the Capitals to evaluate their progress. Washington Capitals 2016 Development Camp Guide

Camp Storylines Roll Call – All seven draft picks from the Capitals 2016 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. The Capitals selected defenseman Lucas Johansen with the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft, held at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Washington selected center Garrett Pilon (87th overall), left wing Damien Riat (117th overall), left wing Beck Malenstyn (145th overall), left wing Axel Jonsson-Fjallby (147th overall), defenseman Chase Priskie (177th overall) and defenseman Dmitriy Zaitsev (207th overall) on the second day of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Quick Studies – attended last summer’s development camp and played in nine games for the Capitals in 2015- 16. Nine players who attended the 2015 development camp (, , , Jakub Vrana, , , Liam O’Brien, Stephenson, Vitek Vanecek) played for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the , during the 2015-16 regular season and were joined by two players (Connor Hobbs, Colby Williams) who attended last season’s development camp for their playoff run. Two players (Caleb Herbert, Vanecek) played for Washington’s ECHL affiliate, the , in 2015-16.

Veteran Presence – Travis Boyd will be participating in his fifth development camp this year. Boyd registered 53 points (21g, 32a) in 76 games with Hershey (AHL) in 2015-16 in his first professional season. Boyd finished the season ranked second on the team in assists and third in goals and points. In addition, he scored the game-winning in overtime in Game 7 of the second round of the 2016 playoffs. Madison Bowey and Riley Barber are returning for their fourth consecutive development camp. Bowey registered 29 points (4g, 25a) in 70 games as a rookie with the Bears last season and led the team in plus/minus (+22). Barber recorded 55 points (26g, 29a) in 74 games and ranked second on the team in goals and points and third in assists as a rookie.

Immediate Impact – All four draft picks from the Capitals 2015 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. , the Capitals first-round pick in 2015, played in 19 games as a rookie with Magnitogorsk Metallurg (KHL) in 2015-16 and posted a 6-4-3 record with two shutouts, a 2.04 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. Samsonov ranked third in goals-against average and save percentage last season among KHL goaltenders under the age of 24 and was the only goaltender in the league under the age of 22 to play in more than 10 games. Jonas Siegenthaler, Washington’s second round selection in 2015, earned eight points (3g, 5a) in 40 games as a rookie with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss National League A. Siegenthaler finished the season ranked tied for fourth on the team in plus/minus (+16). Connor Hobbs, the Capitals fifth-round pick last season, registered 41 points (19g, 22a) in 58 games with the (WHL) in 2015-16 and finished the season ranked fifth among WHL defensemen in power-play goals (10) and tied for fifth in goals and minutes (106).

Kelowna Connection – Capitals prospects Madison Bowey and Lucas Johansen were teammates with the (WHL) in 2014-15 and helped the Rockets win the WHL championship. Other defensemen to play for Kelowna include Shea Weber (Nashville), Duncan Keith (Chicago), Tyson Barrie (Colorado), Tyler Myers () and Luke Schenn (Los Angeles).

Homegrown – Fourteen players (Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, , Stanislav Galiev, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Chandler Stephenson and Tom Wilson) who played for the Capitals in 2015-16 were originally drafted by Washington. Capitals draftees accounted for 60.9% of the team’s goals last season and 63.2% of the team’s assists. In addition, goaltenders drafted by Washington have accounted for 223 of the team’s 256 wins (87.1%) during the last six seasons.

High Class – The Capitals 2012 NHL Draft class has combined to play in 475 NHL games, ranking first in the NHL. In addition, Washington’s 2005 Draft class ranks first in games played (2,192) and its 2009 Draft class ranks fifth in games played (948).

Age Differential – Garrett Pilon (born April 13, 1998), drafted by Washington in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft, is the youngest player attending this year’s development camp. Free agent invite John Parker (born January 11, 1992) is the oldest.

Player Bios

Thomas Aldworth Right Wing (51) Free Agent

Aldworth registered 13 points (6g, 7a) in 32 games as a freshman at Quinnipiac University (NCAA) last season. The 5’11”, 190-pound right wing earned three points in consecutive games on Oct. 10 vs. Holy Cross (1g, 2a) and Oct. 15 vs. Arizona State (2g, 1a). In addition, Aldworth posted a four-game point streak from Feb. 13 – March 11 (1g, 3a).

Riley Barber Right Wing (24) Drafted by WSH in the sixth round, 167th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft

Barber recorded 55 points (26g, 29a) in 74 games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) during the 2015-16 season. The 6’0”, 198-pound right wing ranked second on the team in goals and points and third in assists as a rookie, In addition, he ranked 20th in the AHL scoring. Barber registered 12 multi-point games and recorded a point in 27 of 39 contests last season.

Kristofers Bindulis Defenseman (84) Free Agent

Bindulis earned 46 points (10g, 36a) in 57 games with the Aston Rebels (NAHL) last season. The 6’3”, 205-pound defenseman ranked second among NAHL defensemen in points and assist in 2015-16 and tied for third in goals. Bindulis served as captain for Aston last season and was named to the 2015-16 All-NAHL Team. In addition, he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Riga, Latvia, native is committed to Lake Superior State University (NCAA) for the 2016-17 season.

Madison Bowey Defenseman (22) Drafted by WSH in the second round, 53rd overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft

Bowey registered 29 points (4g, 25a) in 70 games as a rookie with the Hershey Bears (AHL) last season. The 6’2”, 209-pound defenseman led the team in plus/minus (+22).

Travis Boyd Center (54) Drafted by WSH in the sixth round, 177th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft

Boyd registered 53 points (21g, 32a) in 76 games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) in 2015-16. The 5’11”, 185-pound center ranked second on the team in assists, tied for second in power-play goals (7) and third in goals and points last season as a rookie. In addition, he scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Game 7 of the second round of the .

Josh Burnside Left Wing (86) Free Agent

Burnside registered 45 points (13g, 32a) in 55 games with the Mississauga Steelheads (OHL) last season. The 5’11”, 186-pound left wing served as captain for the Steelheads in 2015-16 and ranked fourth on the team in points and assists and set OHL career highs in points and assists. Burnside recorded 12 multi-point games last season and scored two goals on Feb. 21 at Sudbury.

Adam Carlson Goaltender (81) Signed with WSH as a free agent on March 28, 2016

Calson posted a 7-7-3 record with one shutout, a 2.85 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in his freshman season with Mercyhurst University (NCAA) in 2015-16. The 6’3”, 180-pound goaltender ranked tied for fifth in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) in save percentage, 10th in saves (536) and 11th in goals-against average and wins.

Kevin Elgestal Right Wing (71) Drafted by WSH in the seventh round, 194th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft

Elgestal registered 12 points (6g, 6a) and 28 penalty minutes in 16 games with Frolunda of the J20 SuperElit in 2015- 16. The 6’1, 176-pound right wing also registered five points (3g, 2a) in 27 games with HC Vita Hästen (HockeyAllsvenskan) last season.

Shane Gersich Center (63) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 134th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft

Gersich recorded 11 points (9g, 2a) and 16 penalty minutes in 37 games with the University of North Dakota (NCAA) as a freshman and helped North Dakota capture the 2016 NCAA National Championship.

Hobbs registered 41 points (19g, 22a) in 58 games with the Regina Pats (WHL) in 2015-16. The 6’1”, 187-pound defenseman finished the season ranked fifth among WHL defensemen in power-play goals (10) and tied for fifth in goals and penalty minutes (106).

Johansen registered 49 points (10 goals, 39 assists) in 69 games with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) last season. The 6’2”, 176-pound defenseman added eight points (two goals, six assists) in 18 playoff games to help the Rockets reach the Western Conference Championship Series. Jonsson-Fjallby registered 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists) in 39 games with Djurgarden (Sweden-Jr.) in 2015-16. The 6’0”, 170-pound left wing earned four points (two goals, two assists) in seven games with Sweden at the 2016 U18 World Championship.

Laporte registered 17 points (8g, 9a) in 31 games with Western Michigan University (NCAA) in 2015-16. The 6’0”, 186-pound right wing ranked third on the team in goals and netted the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout at Bowling Green on Dec. 13.

Tyler Lewington Defenseman (78) Drafted by WSH in the seventh round, 204th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft

Lewington played in Hershey (AHL) and South Carolina (ECHL) during the 2015-16 season. The 6’1”, 197-pound defenseman registered six points (3g, 3a) and 89 penalty minutes in 32 games with the Bears last season and earned six points (1g, 5a) in 14 games with the Stingrays.

Beck Malenstyn Left Wing (47) Drafted by WSH in the fifth round, 145th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Malenstyn registered 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists) in 70 games with the Calgary Hitmen (WHL) last season. The 6’2”, 191-pound left wing ranked third on the team in games played and ninth in points and assists in 2015-16. He has earned 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 126 career WHL games with Calgary. The Delta, B.C., native earned three points (two goals, one assist) in five games with at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial.

Dylan Margonari Center (59) Free Agent

Margonari played in 30 games with Minnesota State University (NCAA) last season, registering 12 points (6g, 6a) and 16 penalty minutes. The 6’1”, 190-pound center recorded a goal and two assists against Bemidji State on March 4 and scored a game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory against Northern Michigan on Jan. 9.

Tim McGauley Center (75) Signed with WSH as a free agent on Oct. 5, 2015

McGauley appeared in 51 games with the (WHL) last season, registering 49 points (22g, 27a) and 24 penalty minutes. The 6’0”, 180-pound center was an alternate captain for the Wheat Kings in 2015-16 and earned 26 points (8g, 18a) in 21 playoff games as Brandon captured the 2016 WHL Championship.

John Parker Center (73) Free Agent

Parker registered 17 points (11g, 6a) in 39 games with Bemidji State University (NCAA) last season. The 5’11”, 185- pound center served as an assistant captain in 2015-16 and earned career-highs in goals, assists and points. The Beavers posted 8-1-0 record last season when Parker scored a goal.

Garrett Pilon Center (40) Drafted by WSH in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Pilon registered 47 points (15 goals, 32 assists) in 71 games with the (WHL) last season. The 5’10”, 175-pound center led Kamloops in game-winning goals (6) last season, ranked second in power-play assists (14), fourth in games played, fifth in assists, sixth in points and tied for sixth in goals. In addition, Pilon ranked second among WHL rookies in game-winning goals, ninth in assists and tied for ninth in points.

Brian Pinho Right Wing (64) Drafted by WSH in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft

Pinho registered 25 points (9g, 16a) in 38 games with Providence College (NCAA) in 2015-16 and finished the season plus-16. The 6’1”, 186-pound right wing recorded six multi-point games and posted a five-game point streak (2g, 7a) from Jan. 3-16.

Priskie recorded 26 points (four goals, 22 assists) in 43 games with Quinnipiac University (NCAA) last season. The 6’0”, 185-pound defenseman tallied four multi-point games in 2015-16, including three assists on Nov. 7 at Cornell.
