2016 WASHINGTON CAPITALS DEVELOPMENT CAMP Kettler Capitals Iceplex • Arlington, Virginia June 28 - July 2, 2016 Capitals Development Camp Notes The Washington Capitals will host their 2016 Prospect Development Camp from CAMP SCHEDULE June 28 - July 2, 2016 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public. Tuesday, June 28 9:15 a.m.: Defense on ice (Public rink) Capitals development camp is an annual week-long summer session with on- and 9:15 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Capitals rink) off-ice workouts designed to help Capitals prospects improve their games and allow 3:40 p.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) the Capitals to evaluate their progress. This is the 10th straight year that the camp is 4 p.m.: All players on ice (Capitals rink) being held at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Past development camps have been held in 5:15 p.m. Media availability Odenton, Md., and Hershey, Pa. Wednesday, June 29 Attendees include Capitals prospects who are under contract and recent Capitals Capitals Fan Fest draft picks who have not been signed yet. In addition, several undrafted and free 11 a.m.: On-ice testing (Public rink) agent amateur players will be in attendance. 11 a.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) 12 p.m.: All skaters on ice (Capitals rink) The Capitals will host Caps Fan Fest on Wednesday, June 29, featuring the Caps 1 p.m.: Media availability 5 p.m.: Capitals prospects at Fan Fest Alumni Exhibition at 7:30 p.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Washington Capitals 2016 Development Camp Guide Camp Storylines Roll Call – All seven draft picks from the Capitals 2016 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. The Capitals selected defenseman Lucas Johansen with the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft, held at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Washington selected center Garrett Pilon (87th overall), left wing Damien Riat (117th overall), left wing Beck Malenstyn (145th overall), left wing Axel Jonsson-Fjallby (147th overall), defenseman Chase Priskie (177th overall) and defenseman Dmitriy Zaitsev (207th overall) on the second day of the 2016 NHL Draft. Quick Studies – Chandler Stephenson attended last summer’s development camp and played in nine games for the Capitals in 2015- 16. Nine players who attended the 2015 development camp (Madison Bowey, Christian Djoos, Nathan Walker, Jakub Vrana, Travis Boyd, Riley Barber, Liam O’Brien, Stephenson, Vitek Vanecek) played for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, during the 2015-16 regular season and were joined by two players (Connor Hobbs, Colby Williams) who attended last season’s development camp for their playoff run. Two players (Caleb Herbert, Vanecek) played for Washington’s ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, in 2015-16. Veteran Presence – Travis Boyd will be participating in his fifth development camp this year. Boyd registered 53 points (21g, 32a) in 76 games with Hershey (AHL) in 2015-16 in his first professional season. Boyd finished the season ranked second on the team in assists and third in goals and points. In addition, he scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Game 7 of the second round of the 2016 Calder Cup playoffs. Madison Bowey and Riley Barber are returning for their fourth consecutive development camp. Bowey registered 29 points (4g, 25a) in 70 games as a rookie with the Bears last season and led the team in plus/minus (+22). Barber recorded 55 points (26g, 29a) in 74 games and ranked second on the team in goals and points and third in assists as a rookie. Immediate Impact – All four draft picks from the Capitals 2015 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. Ilya Samsonov, the Capitals first-round pick in 2015, played in 19 games as a rookie with Magnitogorsk Metallurg (KHL) in 2015-16 and posted a 6-4-3 record with two shutouts, a 2.04 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. Samsonov ranked third in goals-against average and save percentage last season among KHL goaltenders under the age of 24 and was the only goaltender in the league under the age of 22 to play in more than 10 games. Jonas Siegenthaler, Washington’s second round selection in 2015, earned eight points (3g, 5a) in 40 games as a rookie with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss National League A. Siegenthaler finished the season ranked tied for fourth on the team in plus/minus (+16). Connor Hobbs, the Capitals fifth-round pick last season, registered 41 points (19g, 22a) in 58 games with the Regina Pats (WHL) in 2015-16 and finished the season ranked fifth among WHL defensemen in power-play goals (10) and tied for fifth in goals and penalty minutes (106). Kelowna Connection – Capitals prospects Madison Bowey and Lucas Johansen were teammates with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) in 2014-15 and helped the Rockets win the WHL championship. Other defensemen to play for Kelowna include Shea Weber (Nashville), Duncan Keith (Chicago), Tyson Barrie (Colorado), Tyler Myers (Winnipeg) and Luke Schenn (Los Angeles). Homegrown – Fourteen players (Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Connor Carrick, Stanislav Galiev, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Chandler Stephenson and Tom Wilson) who played for the Capitals in 2015-16 were originally drafted by Washington. Capitals draftees accounted for 60.9% of the team’s goals last season and 63.2% of the team’s assists. In addition, goaltenders drafted by Washington have accounted for 223 of the team’s 256 wins (87.1%) during the last six seasons. High Class – The Capitals 2012 NHL Draft class has combined to play in 475 NHL games, ranking first in the NHL. In addition, Washington’s 2005 Draft class ranks first in games played (2,192) and its 2009 Draft class ranks fifth in games played (948). Hey, Brother – Capitals prospect Lucas Johansen is the younger brother of Nashville Predators center Ryan Johansen. Age Differential – Garrett Pilon (born April 13, 1998), drafted by Washington in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft, is the youngest player attending this year’s development camp. Free agent invite John Parker (born January 11, 1992) is the oldest. Washington Capitals 2016 Development Camp Guide Player Bios Thomas Aldworth Right Wing (51) Free Agent Aldworth registered 13 points (6g, 7a) in 32 games as a freshman at Quinnipiac University (NCAA) last season. The 5’11”, 190-pound right wing earned three points in consecutive games on Oct. 10 vs. Holy Cross (1g, 2a) and Oct. 15 vs. Arizona State (2g, 1a). In addition, Aldworth posted a four-game point streak from Feb. 13 – March 11 (1g, 3a). Riley Barber Right Wing (24) Drafted by WSH in the sixth round, 167th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft Barber recorded 55 points (26g, 29a) in 74 games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) during the 2015-16 season. The 6’0”, 198-pound right wing ranked second on the team in goals and points and third in assists as a rookie, In addition, he ranked 20th in the AHL scoring. Barber registered 12 multi-point games and recorded a point in 27 of 39 contests last season. Kristofers Bindulis Defenseman (84) Free Agent Bindulis earned 46 points (10g, 36a) in 57 games with the Aston Rebels (NAHL) last season. The 6’3”, 205-pound defenseman ranked second among NAHL defensemen in points and assist in 2015-16 and tied for third in goals. Bindulis served as captain for Aston last season and was named to the 2015-16 All-NAHL Team. In addition, he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Riga, Latvia, native is committed to Lake Superior State University (NCAA) for the 2016-17 season. Madison Bowey Defenseman (22) Drafted by WSH in the second round, 53rd overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft Bowey registered 29 points (4g, 25a) in 70 games as a rookie with the Hershey Bears (AHL) last season. The 6’2”, 209-pound defenseman led the team in plus/minus (+22).
