TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals take on the Buffalo Sabres at Capital One Arena on Friday in the second of three meetings between the teams this season. Washington won the last meeting 4-3 in a shootout on Dec. 15. The Capitals are 56-83-15-5 all-time against the Sabres and 10-3-0 in their last 13 games.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Playing Right - In the month of December, the Capitals have a 53.75 attempt percentage at five-on-five (380 shots for, 327 against), the fifth-best percentage in the NHL during that time frame. Washington's 327 allowed shot attempts at five-on-five is the second lowest total in the NHL (Carolina: 296 shot attempts in seven games). In total, 20 of the Capitals' 21 players that have played in December have recorded a point at five-on-five, and 19 of 21 have a positive shot attempts percentage, with T.J. Oshie leading the way with a 57.14 percentage (52 shot attempts for, 39 against). Additionally, the Capitals' 13 allowed goals at five-on-five is tied for the lowest total goals against in the NHL, while their 25 goals for are tied for fifth, and their 65.79 goals for percentage ranks first in the NHL. Alex Ovechkin's seven goals at five-on-five lead the NHL, while Nic Dowd's six assists lead the Capitals and are tied for the seventh most in the NHL.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Great 8 – Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL with 29 goals, and he's looking to become the first player to reach the 30 goal mark this season. Should he score tonight, it'll be the fifth time in his career Ovechkin reached the mark before any player, all of which occurred in the last seven seasons. Additionally, Ovechkin is one goal shy of joining Gartner (15) as the only players in NHL history to begin their career with 14 consecutive 30-goal seasons, and one of three players in NHL history with 14 seasons with at least 30 goals (Gartner: 17; Jaromir Jagr: 15 seasons). Coming into tonight’s game, Ovechkin is coming off a personal-best and a season-high 14 game point streak (17g, 6a- previously: 13 games, Dec. 30, 2006 through Feb. 1, 2007, 20 points). Ovechkin, who is 33, became the eighth player in NHL history to post a point streak of at least 14 games at age 33 or older and first since Luc Robitaille had a 15-game run at age 34 in 1999-00. Ovechkin is now five goals shy of passing Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list. Among the top 15 goal scorers all-time, Ovechkin's 0.61 goals per game ranks second (Mario Lemieux: 0.75 goals per game). holds the NHL's all-time record for goals scored (894) and has played 451 more games than Ovechkin. Should Ovechkin play in 451 more games and maintain his 0.61 goals per game rate, Ovechkin is on a 911-goal pace.

Nice and Kuzy - Evgeny Kuznetsov has 10 assists in his last nine games. Kuznetsov's 2.82 assists per 60 minutes of play rank sixth in the NHL among players with at least 20 games played this season. Additionally, Kuznetsov's career 2.91 points and 2.05 assists per 60 minutes rank first among the 2010 NHL Draft class. Kuznetsov is four points shy of 300 career points, and should he reach the mark in 32 games, he'll be the only player from the draft class with 300 points in fewer than 400 career games. Kuznetsov will become the 25th player in franchise history to record 300 points.

Brink of 400 - Dmitry Orlov is expected to play in his 399th career game tonight. Orlov would become the 14th defenseman in franchise history to play in 400 career games for the Capitals, the ninth home grown draft pick to reach the mark and the second Russian-born defenseman to reach the mark (Sergei Gonchar). This season, Orlov has 12 points (2g, 10a), and has reached the 30 points mark in each of the last two seasons (2016-17: career high 33 points; 2017-18: 31 points). Since entering the NHL in 2011-12, Orlov's 136 points (32g, 104a) are the second-most in the NHL by a Russian born defenseman (Andrei Markov: 206 points). Orlov is one of only three defensemen selected outside of the first round of the 2009 NHL Draft (selected in second round, 55th overall) who is averaging more than 1.00 points per 60 minutes of play in his career (Colorado's Tyson Barrie: 64th overall, 1.72 points per 60; New Jersey's Sami Vatanen: 106th overall, 1.30 points per 60; Orlov: 1.06 points per 60).

Super Carly - John Carlson logged 29:02 of ice time on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the third-most TOI he's recorded in a single game this season (Oct. 19 vs. : 29:28; Oct. 15: 29:11) and the second straight game he's logged at least 29 minutes of play. Carlson has led the Capitals in ice time in 25 of the 31 games he's appeared in this season, leads the team and ranks sixth in the NHL in TOI per game (25:34). Carlson has 35 points this season (5g, 30a), which is tied for the third most by a defenseman, and his 30 assists are tied with Brent Burns for the most by a defenseman. Carlson has been on the ice for 44 goals for at five-on-five this season, which leads the Capitals and is the third most in the NHL ( Thomas Chabot: 47; Morgan Rielly: 46). The Capitals are 15-2-2 this season when Carlson records a point. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Carlson's 103 points (20g, 83a) ranks first among all defensemen. Carlson's 1.49 points per 60 minutes of five-on-five play over the course of his career rank third among defensemen selected in the 2008 NHL Draft (Erik Karlsson: 1.90 points per; Roman Josi: 1.50 points per), and his 2.19 points per 60 at five-on-five rank first over the last two seasons.

Buffalo Hunters - The Capitals have earned a point in 27 of their last 34 games against the Sabres (23-7-4). Alex Ovechkin has earned 47 points (31g, 16a) in 46 career games against the Sabres and has earned 15 points (11g, 4a) in his last 14 games against Buffalo. Nicklas Backstrom has recorded 29 points (8g, 21a) in 38 games career games against the Sabres.

Additional Capitals Notes What a Line - Jakub Vrana, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson have primarily skated together over the last two games (26:07 total minutes at five-on-five). At five-on-five, the trio has produced 42 on-ice shot attempts while allowing 29 (59.15 shot attempt percentage), 19 shots on goal while allowing 14 (57.58 shots for percentage), produced two goals and one against, and 22 scoring chances for while allowing 18 (55.00 scoring chance for percentage).

Goals Galore - The Capitals are 12-3-0 in their last 15 games and have recorded at least three goals in 14 of those 15 games. The Capitals went on a 14 game streak (Nov. 16 through Dec. 15) where they recorded three goals in every game, the second-longest streak since 1993. Over those last 15 games Capitals' 24 points are tied for the third most in the NHL, and their 61 goals are fourth. Alex Ovechkin's 17 goals during that span are the most in the NHL, while John Carlson's 17 assists lead the Capitals and rank first among defensemen and tied for sixth overall. With a 20-10-3 record, the Capitals are in first place in the Metropolitan Division.

On Par for Career Years - Brett Connolly has 20 points (7g, 13a) in 33 games, including seven points (3g, 4a) in his last eight games, and is three assists shy of tying his career high for assists in a season (2015-16 with Boston) and seven from his career high in points (2017-18 with Washington). Jakub Vrana is on pace for a 47 point season (10g, 9a in 33 games) after recording 27 points (13g, 14a) as a rookie last season. Tom Wilson has 16 points (9g, 7a) in 14 games this season after setting career highs in goals, assists and points last year (14g, 21a). Nic Dowd has 12 points (4g, 8a) in 29 games, triple his point total last season (3g, 1a) in 27 fewer games and is 10 points shy of his single season high (2016-17 with Los Angeles: 6g, 16a).

That A'Boyd - In 17 games this season, Travis Boyd has 10 points (3g, 7a). Among Capitals players with at least 17 games played this season, Boyd leads the team in points per 60 minutes of five-on-five play (3.92), primary assists (2.03) and assists (1.96). Additionally, Boyd's 3.92 points per 60 minutes at five-on-five rank first in the NHL among players with at least 15 games played.

Going Back-to-Back - The Capitals hold a 7-2-1 record this year in sets of back-to-back games, including a 5-0-0 in the first game. TONIGHT’S GAME SABRES at CAPITALS • This is the second of three meetings between the Sabres and Capitals this season. • Last meeting: Washington defeated Buffalo 4-3 (SO) in Washington on Dec. 15 • Next meeting: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019 in Buffalo • The Sabres are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games vs. the Capitals; 2-6-2 on the road. • This is the 160th game all-time between Buffalo and Washington; Buffalo has an 88-50-21 series record. • The Sabres are 41-27-12 on the road against the Capitals all-time.

THIS DAY IN SABRES HISTORY • The Sabres are 13-5-3 all-time on December 21. • December 21, 1975: Rick Martin scores four goals and Fred Stanfield scores three as the Sabres defeat Washington by a score of 14-2, the largest winning margin in franchise history. The Sabres roster combined for 40 points in the game, the most in team history. • December 21, 1991: Alexander Mogilny sets the franchise record for fastest goal from the start of a game, beating Toronto goaltender Jeff Reese just five seconds after the opening faceoff.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW • Jack Eichel enters tonight’s contest on his first seven-game point streak (9+5) since January 2018. With a point tonight, he’d have his longest streak since he tallied in a career-best 11 straight games from Feb. 14 to March 7, 2017. • Jeff Skinner has points in seven straight games (5+4) for the first time since March 16 to 27, 2017. A point tonight would give him his first career eight-game point streak. • The Sabres are winless in their last six visits to Washington (0-4-2). Their last road win against the Capitals came on Nov. 22, 2014. • Rasmus Dahlin recorded a career-high three points (1+2) on Saturday, when these teams last met. • Sam Reinhart has points in each of his last three games against the Capitals (1+3). • Jeff Skinner has 17 points (8+9) in 20 career visits to Washington.

LEADING THE WAY • Since Jack Eichel, Jeff Skinner and Sam Reinhart began playing together on Nov. 13 vs. Tampa Bay, the Sabres have gone 11-4- 3 and gotten a goal from at least one of the three in all but one of the team’s 18 games. • Each of the three has played at a point-per-game pace or better in the 18 games since they began playing together as a line: • Eichel: 27 points (10 +17), plus-12 rating • Reinhart: 22 points (6+16), plus-10 rating • Skinner: 18 points (13+5), plus-10 rating

COMEBACK KIDS • The Sabres are 6-7-2 this season when trailing after two periods. Entering play Thursday, their six wins when trailing after 40 minutes tied for second-most in the league and their .400 win percentage in those games ranked second. • Buffalo’s six wins when trailing after two have already surpassed last season’s total and leave the team three third-period comebacks shy of the franchise record of nine set in the 2005-06 season.

NOT TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT • The Sabres are 11-2-5 in one-goal games so far this season. Buffalo last won more than half of its one-goal games in a season in 2011-12 (21-9-11). • The team’s current .611 winning percentage in one-goal games would be the seventh-best mark in franchise history and would be the Sabres’ best record in one-goal games since 1989-90 (18-6-3, .667).

WORKING OVERTIME • The Sabres are 8-5 in games that have been tied after regulation this season, including a 5-4 record in overtime and a 3-1 record in shootouts. Their five overtime wins have already matched their overtime win total from last season (5-10) and their three shootout wins are the team’s highest total since 2014-15 (8-5). • Jeff Skinner entered play Thursday tied for the league lead with three overtime goals this season. Skinner’s total through 35 games matches the Sabres’ single-season record shared by Daniel Briere (2006-07) and Derek Roy (2009-10) and ties him for 10th-most career overtime goals in franchise history.

BACK-TO-BACK Tonight’s game opens up Buffalo’s eighth of 16 sets of back-to-back games this season, which continues tomorrow night vs. Anaheim. The Sabres are 4-2-1 in the first game of back-to-back sets and 4-1-2 in the second game so far this season. Buffalo’s point breakdown in their previous back-to-back sets is: four points (3), three points (1), two points (1), one point (2) and zero points (0).

POINTS IN BUNCHES • Jack Eichel recorded his 17th multi-point game of the season on Sunday at Boston (2+2). He has now recorded two points in seven of his last 10 games. • Entering play Thursday, Eichel’s 17 multi-point games ranked third in the league lead this season, one behind co-leaders Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. Through 35 games, he is one shy of his career-high 18 in a season.

SAM I AM • Sam Reinhart enters tonight’s game on a career-best 11-game point streak (5+13), topping his previous career high of five games set from Dec. 20 to 29, 2017. It is the longest active streak in the NHL and the longest by a Sabre since the 2016-17 season. With a point tonight, he would own the longest streak by a Sabre since Tim Connolly recorded points in 16 straight from Dec. 23, 2009 to Jan. 25, 2010. • Reinhart has recorded 31 points (8+23) in his last 28 games, including each of his career-high 11 multi-point games this season. • The Sabres are 15-4-3 this season when Reinhart records at least one point and 26-4-6 (.806) in his career when he records at least two.

DYNAMIC DUO Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner are currently on pace to shatter their personal bests in points and make a mark in the Sabres’ record books on the strength of career-best production at even strength that ranks them among the best even-strength players in the league this season. • If he maintains his current pace, Eichel would finish the season with the second-most even-strength points ever recorded by a Sabre (82), trailing only Pat LaFontaine (83) in 1992-93, and would top LaFontaine’s franchise-record 52 even-strength assists that season. He would also become the first Sabre to record more than 95 points since the 1992-93 season (LaFontaine/Mogilny/Hawerchuk). • Skinner is currently on pace to log the second-highest goal total in Sabres history (59), trailing only Mogilny in 1992-93 (76). His 45 even-strength goals would finish behind only Mogilny’s even-strength total from 1992-93 (49) for most in team history.

Phil Housley enters his second season behind the bench for the Sabres after completing his first season as an NHL head coach in 2017-18. The Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the 18th head coach in Buffalo’s franchise history and the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach.

Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first Final appearance in franchise history. Named an assistant coach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure.

A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota.
