Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the various forms which translation of narrative fiction for girls from English into Dutch takes in the period 1946-1995. Translations are an important part of the genre as a whole, and they grow numerically and proportionally over the period. The dissertation consists of two parts. Part 1 presents and analyses a bibliographical database of 10,000 titles of translated and original Dutch fiction for girls. The focus of the analysis is on the development of the genre, the source languages, the Flemish-Dutch relationship, the proportion of fiction series and the role of publishers. Whereas the publication of original Dutch fiction for girls is predominantly a Netherlands affair, Flemish publishers produce a disproportionately large number of translations. -

Astrid Lindgren and Being Swedish Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) was a children's writer of international repute. Although many of her stories are set in specific times and particular places in Sweden, her work transcends the time-bound and narrowly provincial. Her settings, be they urban, countryside, or fantastic know no borders even when they “are” Swedish down to the last nail. And, of course, outrageous and transgressive characters like Pippi Longstocking and Karlsson-on-the-roof hold no passports; they belong (and are out of place) everywhere. I believe, too, that Lindgren's oral storytelling style makes her more readily translatable into other languages and cultures than if she had used a more literary style. Finally, Lindgren’s deep concern for the vulnerable (yet potentially empowered) child finds resonance across possible cultural divides. Lindgren writes for a commonwealth of children. However, it is also true that Astrid Lindgren and her work hold a special place in the hearts and minds of Swedes. One could even argue that the collective identity formation of Swedes owes a great deal to her. The template for a good (if old-fashioned) childhood is that of the Bullerby children. Childhood pranks are inevitably compared to those of Emil. Attitudes of solidarity and courage are lent shape by Ronia and the Brother's Lionheart. The expression “han fattas mig” (feebly translated “I miss him”) is frequently seen in obituaries. Names like Ida, Emil, Annika and even the invented Ronia have acquired currency (and not only in Sweden). The challenge Among practitioners as well as researchers there is an increasing awareness of the need for sustainable development. This concern for endurance encompasses firms and other organizations as well as localities, from communities and regions to nations and the globe as a whole. In the public discourse sustainability then covers, besides economic, also social and ecological dimension. Now when creativity and diversity have been recognizes as major triggers of change and development, see for example Florida 2002, culture, both as a way of life based on a concern for the cultural heritage and as an aesthetic challenge, as well must be considered as a dimension of sustainability. These four contributors to sustainability are expected to jointly create organizations and localities that are able to create a better world. Here we want to add a fifth concern that in a way incorporates and anticipates the very reason for creating a sustainable world. How to make the importance and wellbeing of the children the focus of soci(et)al improvement? There are two major strategies to cope with an increasing call for sustainable development. One is to perceive and organize the challenge as a problem that calls for a (re)active solution. This usually is about creating a corrective to the negative consequences of a too strong economic focus in ongoing business activity. The practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) may be considered as such an adjustment. -

While "suitable" films have been praised for their obvious pedagogic function, "non-suitable" films (such as popular and violent films) have also managed to emerge into the film pedagogic context with varying arguments, e.g. that film education should reflect the reality of the youth or that children will see the films anyway and need guidance. This thesis explores a contemporary Swedish example of a contested children's film that was produced for school cinema but classified as harmful for children under the age of fifteen by the Swedish Media Council. By situating the case in relation to film pedagogic history and aspects from the use of violent films in the 1980's, the study shows how the film pedagogic discourse can be influenced by an anxiety concerning the "child's best". The study enhances the significant role of "enthusiastic teachers" and the importance of considering the current film pedagogic conditions.
