Charlotte Berry 24 October 2013 ABSTRACT This thesis uses a multidisciplinary approach drawing primarily on archival and bibliographical research as well as the fields of children’s literature, book history and translation to explore British translation of Nordic children’s fiction since 1950. Which works of Nordic children’s literature have been published in the UK during the period in question? And how were Nordic children’s authors and texts selected by British publishers, along with British translators and illustrators? Chapter One gives an overview of limited past research in this area, focusing on publishing and book history and Translation Studies (particularly Polysystem Theory). Chapter Two considers bibliographical research already undertaken in Children’s Literature Translation Studies and is followed by a detailed study of the British National Bibliography (1950-2000). This methodological approach has documented for the first time the depth and breadth of the corpus of British translations of Nordic children’s fiction since 1950, enabling key authors, publishers, translators and genres to be identified. A brief analysis is given of the Golden Age of Nordic children’s literature in British translation up to 1975, followed by a decline into the twenty first century. The thesis then goes on to examine the principles and practices of text and translator selection as its second major research element, with extensive use made here of archival sources. Chapter Three explores publishing archives as a research resource and details issues in their distribution and potential use. Chapter Four gives an overview of the key role of the editor as a centre pin in the process of publishing works in translation, drawing on a wide range of publishing archives as well as introducing the case study part of the thesis which examines an independent press and a major international academic publishing house. Chapter Five looks in detail at the role of author-educator-publisher Aidan Chambers in publishing Nordic children’s literature in the early 1990s through small press Turton & Chambers. Chapter Six examines the role of Oxford University Press in publishing Nordic authors from the 1950s to the 2010s, in particular Astrid Lindgren. This thesis aims to make a significant and unique scholarly contribution to the hitherto neglected study of the translation of children’s literature into British English, offering a methodological framework (bibliographical and archival) which has potential for use with other language systems and with adult literature in translation.     Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature.

So far, seventeen laureates have received the Award, the latest recipient is the German illustrator Wolf Erlbruch. The award amounts to SEK 5 million (approx. EUR 570 000), making it the world's largest award for children's and young adult literature.     Anna Höglund tilldelas Astrid Lindgren-priset Författaren, illustratören och konstnären Anna Höglund tilldelades idag Astrid Lindgren-priset för förtjänstfullt författarskap inom barn- och ungdomslitteraturen med motiveringen: Anna Höglund både skriver och tecknar poetiskt och precist, egensinnigt och vackert, samtida och tidlöst om relationer, känslor och identitet samt om att vara liten och bli stor så att det känns och stannar kvar hos såväl små som stora läsare. Prisutdelningen ägde rum i Rabén & Sjögrens lokaler på Riddarholmen i Stockholm. Traditionsenligt bjöds på ostkaka och portvin. Anna Höglund föddes 1958 och räknas som en av Sveriges främsta illustratörer och har samarbetat med författare som Ulf Stark, Barbro Lindgren, Eva Susso, Gunnar Lundkvist och Ulf Nilsson. Hon har också skrivit flera egna böcker, som böckerna om Mina och Kåge. Hon debuterade 1982 med Sagan om pannkakan och har sedan dess publicerat ett 20-tal böcker, varav många har blivit översätta till andra språk. Anna Höglund skriver även dramatik och gör tecknad film. Hon bor tillsammans med man och barn i Stockholm. Astrid Lindgren-priset instiftades av Rabén & Sjögren den 14 november 1967 på Astrids 60-årsdag. Priset har sedan dess delats ut årligen för förtjänstfullt författarskap inom barn- och ungdomslitteraturen. Prissumman är på 50 000 kronor.
