NORTHERN EUROPEAN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE Writing & Global Cultures Flags / Fall 2019 Sandra Ballif Straubhaar GSD 340 / 37160 EUS 347 / 35545 CL 323 / 33450 Course Description: This course will introduce students to nineteenth- to twenty-first-century children’s literature from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Authors highlighted will include Heinrich Hoffmann (Struwwelpeter), Wilhelm Busch (Max and Moritz), Selma Lagerlöf (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils), Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking, Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, The Red Bird, The Brothers Lionheart), Erich Kästner (Emil and the Detectives), Dick Bruna (Miffy), Jostein Gaarder (Sophie’s World), Bjarne Reuter (The Boys from St. Petri), Tove Jansson (Finn Family Moomintroll), Otfried Preussler (The Robber Hotzenplotz, Krabat), Walter Moers (Capt’n Bluebear), Cornelia Funke (Inkworld, Mirrorworld, Pan’s Labyrinth), Sven Nordqvist (Pancakes for Findus), Michael Ende (Momo, Jim Button, The Neverending Story), Jacques Vriens (You’re a Hen!), Annie M. G. Schmidt and Fiep Westendorp (Jip and Janneke), and Klaus Schädelin (My Name is Eugen). Students are encouraged to explore additional authors and works for papers or group projects. Emphasis will be placed on the prominent place of children’s literature in the popular culture of central and northern Europe, as well as the serious issues and themes which north Americans might otherwise consider “adult” that are often found in this genre -- death, war, poverty, social justice, and family conflict, for example – alongside whimsy, warmth and wonder. Grading: Quizzes on Reading (on most Wednesdays, when readings are due): 10 % Two six-page reaction papers or position papers, 15% each: 30 % In-class peer review activities on the above two papers: 10 % One six-page research paper: 20 % Reading Journals (turned in 8 times, approx. -

2003 OVERVIEW OF WORLDWIDE BILATERAL RELATIONS Overview of worldwide bilateral relations United States, Western and Southern Europe One of the essential factors of Estonian foreign and security policy in 2003 was the main source of the political, economic and military power in the transatlantic co-operation area – the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. US support is one of the main preconditions to guaranteeing Estonia’s security. US support was confirmed on May 8, 2003 when the US Senate ratified the NATO acces- sion protocols of the seven acceding countries, including Estonia, with 96 votes for and none against. The successful ratification was followed by a meeting of the Foreign Minister, Kristiina Ojuland and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Marko Mihkelson, who had both been invited to follow the ratifi- cation procedure, with President Bush and members of the US Senate Foreign Affairs committee. Another example of the strong allied status given to Estonia was the exchange of visits by the Commander of Estonian Defence Forces, Vice-Admiral Tarmo Kõuts in May, and the Chairman of the Joint Heads of Staff Committee General Richard Myers in June 2003. 2003 also showed growing interest of the United States towards Estonia as a future European Union member. The numerous high level bilateral meetings between Estonian and US officials showed the growing importance of Estonian views – among the visits, the most important was that of a US delegation led by Charles Ries, who is responsible for US-EU relations at the State Department. The delegation, which met with a number of Estonian officials, was comprised of a number of high-ranking officials and included the officials that were best informed of Estonia. -

Helena Bodin ”Den kyrkan är vackrast i världen” Den ortodoxa kyrkan och ikonerna i Ilon Wiklands barndomsskildring och bildskapande (”That Church is the Most Beautiful in the World”: The Orthodox Church and Icons in the Childhood Narratives and Pictures of Ilon Wikland) Abstract: Ilon Wikland (b. Pääbo, 1930), a well-known illustrator of chil- dren’s books, has depicted her childhood in Estonia and her search for refuge in Sweden in 1944 in four picturebooks (1995–2007). This article focuses on Den långa, långa resan (1995; The Long, Long Journey, with text by Rose Lagercrantz) and I min farmors hus (2005; In My Grandmother’s House, with text by Barbro Lindgren), with the aim of examining the role of Orthodox churches and icons in Ilon Wikland’s childhood narratives and pictures. Wikland’s grandfather was the leader of the choir in the local Or- thodox church in Haapsalu. It is demonstrated that depictions of this church and icons from her grandparents’ home help to place the picturebooks in time and space and contribute to their autobiographical and historical accuracy. Three different themes found in the narratives are explored, since they are essential for the protagonist’s experiences of warfare and flight, and inter- related with the functions of the Orthodox church and its icons. The first is the girl’s sense of freedom and beauty at home and at the Orthodox church. The second theme is her loneliness and desolation when separated from her grandparents and her best friend during the war, situations in which the icons seem to participate in her despair. -

Which works of Nordic children’s literature have been published in the UK during the period in question? And how were Nordic children’s authors and texts selected by British publishers, along with British translators and illustrators? Chapter One gives an overview of limited past research in this area, focusing on publishing and book history and Translation Studies (particularly Polysystem Theory). -
