  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

  • STEVE YOUNG LL July 2021
STEVE YOUNG - LYRICS Steven Timothy Young, 12th July 1942 - 17th March 2016 Compiled by Robin Dunn assisted by Chrissie van Varik. Please note that this list should be regarded as a ‘work in progress’. We don’t claim definitive knowledge about Steve Young’s recorded and composing output and welcome corrections and/or new information. Many folks will have greater knowledge than we about the details on many of these tracks - musicians, dates of recordings, background etc. As anyone with any experience of these things knows, something new and unexpected is always turning up! If anyone epitomises the title of our website it has to be Steve Young. He covered the full gamut of folk, country, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. Not so well known with the general music-buying public he was nevertheless a huge influence on contemporary and upcoming folk and country musicians many of whom went on to become famous in their own right. Perceived as somewhat of an independent country and folk outsider he was a pioneer of the country rock, Americana, and Alt. Country sounds and often seen as the original so called ‘outlaw’ a label later adopted and inculcated by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson among others. However, Steve Young’s repertoire was much wider and varied. Steve Young was born on 12th July 1942 in Newnan, Georgia. He grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, and in Texas, as the family regularly moved around in search of work. By the time he completed high school he was playing and writing songs that incorporated influences of folk, blues, country and gospel that he absorbed whilst travelling throughout the South.

  • Peter Lewis - the Rebel Hangs Ten in Hollywood
PETER LEWIS - THE REBEL HANGS TEN IN HOLLYWOOD You know Peter Lewis. He's the dapper guy in the upper left-hand corner of that first Moby Grape sleeve, set apart from the rest of the band by those Warren Beatty/Jan Berry/Mark Lindsay good looks Hollywood is always scrambling after. And he's the man who penned the stunning "Fall On You" from the Grape's classic first album. Lewis stuck it out through all the peaks and the valleys, the backbiting and the personnel changes of a band that, over the years, has become synonymous with the label unrealised potential. As Marlon Brando says, in On The Waterfront, they "coulda been a contender." Hell, they could have been champ. Lewis resides now in the tiny Danish town of Solvang, halfway down the California coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Comfortably settled into an upmarket tract home on the outskirts of this little gingerbread encrusted village — whose main appeal seems to lie in its windmills and tourist-clogged gift shops — Lewis seems at peace with his legend, and with that of his former band. He'll theorise for hours with the zeal of a graduate student on just about any topic, but his eyes shine brightest when he gets going on the Grape, past, present and (possibly) future. And how it all fits into the big picture. Raised in Beverly Hills by his mother, legendary film goddess and Academy Award winner, Loretta Young (Best Actress for 1947's The Farmer's Daughter with Joseph Cotten) and his dad, screenwriter Tom Lewis, Peter admits at one time he "had it all." His birthright, however, never stopped him from seeking his own path.

ABSTRACT "KING HARVEST (HAS SURELY COME)": RURAL POPULIST IMAGERY IN ROOTS ROCK MUSIC, 1967-1973 CHRISTOPHER LEE WITTE CANDIDATE FOR DEGREE OF ARTS IN HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND MAY2006 PROFESSOR ROBERT C. KENZER The Americanroots rock musical genre of the late 1960's and early 1970's too oftenhas been overlooked in the historical discussion of popular culture of the period. This study, through an examination of the works of fivepopular musical groups- Bob Dylan, The Band, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, and Creedence ClearwaterRevival - focuseson how this music tied into a continued American mythology tradition of populism. Through an approach that corresponds with Richard Slotkin's views on the creation of Americanmyth , and a focuson the lyrical content of the songs and their presentation of nature, the open road, American heroes and anti-heroes, and death and destruction, this thesis examines how these songs utilized populist philosophies foundin earlier American folkand blues music andadapted them as a means to explain and rationalize their place in the post-modem American society.

Steve Wynn hatte 1982 mit The Dream Syndicate seinen Durchbruch in der Musikszene mit The Days of Wine and Roses.
