A secondary stratum was added in 1905 for the purpose of training assistant engineers. In 1924, the College developed into a vocational secondary school concentrating on teaching the following dis- ciplines: , , Teachers’ Training, Clerical Work, Accounting and Science. In the same year Kitchener School of was established. The year 1936 witnessed the beginning of higher education in the Sudan with the establishment of the School of Law. By 1940 the College included schools of Agriculture, Arts, Law, Science, Engineer- ing and Veterinary Science. This Act has replaced both Atomic Energy Research Institute and the Atomic Energy Committee and vested their functions (Research, Coordination and Services) in the newly established Commission.

Historical Background Sudan becomes a member of the International Atomic energy Agency in 1958; one year after it had came into being. In 1962 Sudan Atomic Energy Committee was constituted to act as a focal point responsible for co-coordinating between Sudan Government and the Agency in matters related to nuclear energy. In 1971”Sudan Atomic Energy Committe Act” was issued mainly establishing a commit- tee affiliated to the National Geology Corporation and meant to supervise the implementa- tion of the IAEA technical cooperation program in Sudan. The “Atomic Energy Committee Act, 1973” established a committee, under the supervi- sion of the chairman of National Research Council, with the mandate of promoting use of nuclear techniques in the country and also, overseeing safety in all activities involving use of ionizing radiation

Objectives of SAEC The SAEC shall pursue the following objects, to: 1. Care for the national interests, at both the international and national levels, with respect to the atomic energy affairs, and follow-up the developments thereof, 2. Enable the State to utilize atomic energy, in the peaceful purposes, in service of the plans and programs of economic development, 3. Ensure the safety of human beings, animals and the environment, in general, against radiation risks, and disseminate awareness’ of such risks among individuals
