La Maserati 350S De Stirling Moss La Maserati 350S de Stirling Moss En début de saison 1956 l’équipe Maserati pris conscience que pour gagner le Championnat de voitures de Sport il lui faudrait disposer d’un modèle plus puissant que la Maserati 300S qui était en service depuis plus d’un an. Aussi en attendant la future 450S , l’ingénieur Alfieri décidait d’améliorer les performances de la 300S en substituant son moteur 6 cylindres originel 3 litres de 280cv par le nouveau moteur prévu pour équiper la 3500 GT de route , le nouveau 6 cylindres 3,5 litres poussé a 325 cv pour cette version Sport. Utilisant un châssis neuf de 300S modifié pour accueillir le plus volumineux moteur 3,5 litres, la toute nouvelle 350S en version Monoposto fut testée le 24 Avril 56 sur l’Aeroautodromo de Modena par Stirling Moss en prévision des Mille Miglia à courir quelques jours plus tard par aux mains de Piero Taruffi. Une 2ème 350S baptisée 3501 en version Biposto et équipée d’un large pare-brise était prévue pour Stirling Moss qui faisait équipe avec son habituel navigateur Dennis Jenkinson. Mais 2 jours avant la course la 350S de Moss était toujours en cours de montage à l’usine de Modena si bien que Moss et Jenkinson effec- tuèrent la reconnaissance du parcours de 1600 Kms des Mille Miglia sur une A6 2000 Zagato. La 350S fut terminée à la dernière minute dans la nuit la veille du départ et ne put être testée que quelques kilometres dans le col de la Raticosa avant d’être amenée à Brescia pour le départ (photo 1). 1 2 Sa propre 350S Monoposto manquant de mise au point et à la tenue de route précaire, Taruffi préféra prendre le départ sur une classique 300S moins puissante mais plus sure pour les routes des Mille Miglia. Cette 350S fut plus tard vendue au privé Luigi Piotti qui la fit courir aux 12 Heures de Reims 1956. De son coté, Moss sous la pression d’Alfieri et pour ne pas décevoir les mécanos qui avaient travaillé d’arrache-pied sur sa 350S, pris donc le départ le 28 Avril à 5h54 du matin sur sa version Biposto non rodée avec son fidèle coéquipier «Jenks» et le N° de course 554 (photos 2 et 3). A mi-course Moss se battant avec sa 350S difficile à conduire n’avait pu mieux faire que se maintenir à la 5éme place provisoire (photo 3). Malheureusement sous une pluie battante la 350S sortait de la route à la mi-course après Pescara, à Antrodoco, échappant de peu de plonger au fond d’un ravin grâce a un petit arbre planté à cet endroit ! (photo 4). 3 4 [email protected] Retournée à l’usine, la 350S accidentée va être réparée et modifiée pour accueillir le nouveau moteur V8 de 4,5 litres et 400cv. La nouvelle combinaison en version Monoposto est dotée d’un capot avec une impression- nante bosse abritant les gros carburateurs Webers et de 2 échappements courts a 4 sorties. 5 6 Considérée comme le prototype 450S, la voiture est envoyée à Kristianstad en Suède avec le carnet de douanes ATA pourtant le N° de châssis 4501 pour participer au GP de Suède le 12 Août, dernière épreuve du Champion- nat du Monde 1956 (photos 5 et 6). Sur place il s’avère que la voiture testée aux essais par Moss et Taruffi est difficilement utilisable pour la course : trop de puissance pour ce châssis trop léger, freins insuffisants et trop de vibrations moteur … (photos 7 et 8). Stirling Moss prends le départ sur une 300S mais doit abandonner. 7 8 De retour à Modena le moteur V8 est démonté et le châssis nu avec sa carrosserie est mis de côté dans un coin de l’usine et va rester abandonné sous la poussière plusieurs années. Jusqu’à ce que survienne un jeune étudiant américain en stage à l’usine, Tom Meade, qui en Aout 1965 va l’acheter pour seulement 85 dollars! (photo 9). En octobre 56, Meade la revend à l’américain Niles Moss (rien a voir avec la famille de Stirling) qui la fait équiper par l’atelier Léoni, Drogo et Gentilini d’un moteur V8 Corvette. Rapatriée aux USA elle est revendue en Californie en 1970 a un autre citoyen US qui a son tour va la vendre à l’italien Franco Lombardi qui la « découvre » alors en voyage aux USA en Juillet 1981. Franco Lombardi la ramène en Italie et la fait restaurer a Modena sur la période 82-87 dans l’atelier de Roberto Orsi par plusieurs anciens mécanos Maserati. La 350S/450S retrouve alors un moteur Maserati V8 marine de 6,4 litres racheté au Comte Agusta qui l’avait utilisé sur ses puissants hors-bords de course. Depuis Franco Lombardi l’a rarement utilisé sur route mais on a pu la voir aux Mille Miglia Historiques de 1987 ou au 90ème anniversaire de la Marque en 2004 (photo 10). 9 10.

The tooling for resin production allows for far smaller quantities than traditional diecast metal and so we see many subjects that may not otherwise be viable due to potential sales figures. The lower numbers do mean higher prices however and for some subjects with more mass appeal, die-casting can still be the effective way of making a model and Spark have recognised this and are adding a new series to their catalogue (see forthcoming supplement), with much lower pricing (£27.95) than the resin production and innovative packaging to help them stand out. We saw the first test samples at Nurnberg in February and they are now approaching release. Ebbro’s 1:20 plastic kit of the mid-season McLaren from 2015 (EBB20014) has proved very popular and many builders are now eagerly awaiting the early season car (EBB20013). There’s another to add to the wish list now as, in ad- dition to the livery charge, the McLaren had a significant nose redesign from Austria and this will be represented by another new kit for the Japanese GP (EBB20015). The photo above shows the test mouldings alongside the mid- season car. 1:43 resincast releases of the late season car are also due for both Alonso (EBB45328) and Button (EBB45329).

    STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The purpose of the Historic Motor Sports Association is to encourage the restoration, preservation and use of historic, sports and racing cars. Our events and races are for fun with nothing to be won. Satisfaction and camaraderie among friends is the reward. Our serious interest is in the cars. We want to see old cars with racing history RESTORED. Today many believe the term restore means, "...to make new". Webster says, "restore... to bring back to a former condition. We accept the latter. The enjoyment for us is in driving and experiencing the cars as they were. To support that we arrange our race groups by age and their engine size. Modern technology can make vast improvements in performance possible but that is not our desire and our rules are written with the intent to prevent such modification. We want the cars to be as they were not what they could have been. Restoration, Preservation and Use. Our events are not intended to offer individuals a "career option". There are other professional organizations which would be a better choice. HMSA is for the less driven (excuse the pun). Driving well is important, winning is not. Safety is very important and driving is a major contribution. Racing at any level can be dangerous. We, therefore, have rules and regulations which we hope will be helpful in making your participation both enjoyable and safe. As an overview, we divide safety into two categories: Car and Driver. An old car cannot be made as safe as a modern car. A McLaren with a monocoque tub is definitely safer in a crash than an M.G., Ferrari or Bugatti.
